You're definitely not wrong, BigJ. "Err on the side of caution" is my mantra, more or less. It may even be my middle name; I'll have to check my birth certificate.9 Jul 2004 (updated 9 Jul 2004) »
So, I'm up early for work again trying to finish up my outline for a presentation in the morning (it is already morning, so maybe that's a bit redundant). Well, I'm at the computer typing away when the phone rings: it's 2:20 AM. I'm sure some of you have had this experience, but I can only begin to convey the kind of panic that strikes and the thoughts which appear when the phone rings at that hour:
- Someone is dead
- Someone is dying
- Someone thinks they're funny
- Someone is standing in my kitchen with an axe and a cell phone
To my somewhat uncertain relief, the voice on the other end is unfamiliar, narrowing my options to 3 and 4. And, lets face it, just because TV tells me that things like #4 happen every day, it's really not likely to be the case. Besides, the computer is in the room adjacent to the kitchen; I'd think I'd have heard them come in.
So the voice on the other end starts in about how badly things are going for him. Something about a relationship falling apart; he has to sell his car; he's going into rehab in a week and he's expecting a severe bout of depression to accompany transition. Now what do I do? "Hey buddy. It's 2:30 AM; where are your manners?" What if this is some sort of cry for help and he just picked up the phone and dialed? I brace myself for what I feel I will inevitably hear.
Instead, he drops a name about someone that he thinks I live with -- my lover, in fact. I do my best to casually indicate that no one by that name lives here and that he may have the wrong number. We review the number he thinks he dialed several times, but the number he intended to dial is mine. He apologizes for the call; I explain that I was already awake and that his call is not an interruption. I wish him well with all of the things about which he mistakenly shared with me and we hang up.
Crazy. And a little jarring.
Congradulations, baggins! I would have to agree with gary's sentiment but with a more positive bend. Shonah and I had known each other for about a year -- we had dated about 6 months -- when I proposed. It was hands down the most impulsive thing I've done, though it was not without its forethought.
To address your rational side, being engaged for as long as you're planning will also give you both plenty of time to consider things. We were engaged for about a year and a half, and we (read: "I") nearly called things off at one point. That's a story for another time, but it's a wonderful testimony to my blockheadedness and Shonah's saint-like patience, qualities which flourish to this day. There are many "big decisions" in life that often require a certain leap of faith. I'm a planner and I rarely want to make any decision before I've considered all of my options thourougly. Even so, simply allowing for the passage of time does not certify any decision.
On a completely different note, my employer has just purchased a shiny, new 12" PoweBook for me! Though I've loved running Linux on my work laptop for the last three years, this move is not one that requires much consideration!
Success! On a different note, my fortune cookie at lunch says: Your humor brings romantic opportunities. Seems like that might be something to worry about.
Here, here to beer, neoacerbitas! My employer used to facilitate a beer run every Friday afternoon, but those days are long gone...
I used to work at Burgh desk. The 3 - 7 AM shift was my specialty! That was until I was lured away from Burgh to manage the desk at Sohlberg. My those desk-sitting days were some fine days, yes indeed.
