Spinoza recognizes another and yet higher level of knowledge, which he calls 'intuition' (scientia intuitiva). Intuition is the immediate insight into truth that comes when we grasp a proposition and its proof in a single act of mental attention. An intuition comes to us, he argues, only when we reason from 'an adequate idea of the formal essense of God' - in other words, when we see the exact relation between a thing and the divine substance on which it depends.

For Spinoza, therefore, there are three kinds of understanding: imagination or opinion; the kind of rational science that proceeds through common notions and adequate ideas; and intuition. Understanding of the first kind 'is the only cause of falsify', whereas 'understanding of the second and third kinds is necessarily true'. The advance of knowledge consists in the steady replacement of our confused and inadequate perceptions with adequate ideas until, at the limit, all that we think follows from an adequate idea of the essence of God.
