I was driving home tonight and thinking of all the artists that are so good but I don't have ANY (or enough) of their stuff. We're talking stuff im ASHAMED i don't own. So this is the place to talk about that stuff, as ill bet at least some of you can think of a band that you wish you owned more of their stuff. What albums/artists are you ashamed of not owning?
so here's some stuff im ashamed that i don't own:
Bob Dylan (i am a BIG loser)
Velvet Underground
The Rolling Stones
Wilco
U2 (i had a lot of albums, but i think my sisters have stolen them all and i haven't gotten around to replacing them. but they have been missing for too long.)
The Ramones
Chris Whitley (he's playing at Martyr's here in chicago. but some of us will be in Tucson then.)
Guns N Roses - GNR Lies, Use Your Illusion I (im NOT ashamed that i don't own The Spaghetti Incident...)
Slayer - Reign In Blood (back me up here, oldpossumus)
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Tori Amos (a friend was playing me a bunch of cover songs that she did. super-freakin unbelievable)
Black Sabbath (i can't find my stuff. i think a big problem is that CD's disappear from my posession too often. ive had at least 3 copies of Paranoid in my life)
Ozzy Osbourne
Red House Painters
bluestone (hint hint)
Beastie Boys (had and lost License to Ill. would like their other stuff)
...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead (haven't heard them. but have heard SO MUCH good stuff about them)
James Brown
Allman Brothers
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Cream
The Lazarus Plot
Samael (back me up again, oldpossumus)
So, if any of you dope cats out there care to burn me a disc or two of your favorites, that would be dope as hell. If you want to make a good suggestion as to what i should start with, post it here or in the jukebox entree. whatever you feel is appropriate.
I love Red House Painters. Unfortunately, I've outgrown it. I'm just too happy now to listen to it often - there's nothing worse than trying to devote time to 'Medicine Bottle' when you're not depressed to begin with.Things I'm ashamed I don't own? Wow. My wallet is always thin because I tend to overbuy music. I have six or seven albums that are unopened because I don't have the time to devote to the full listening experience.
I have to agree with you on the Rolling Stones. I don't have any and it upsets me. I don't own enough Simon and Garfunkel. There's a few Guided by Voices albums I miss. When Renee and I split up (she's my best friend and roomate of four years) we split the CD collection. She took all the Beastie Boy albums, I the RHP. I wish I'd done it in reverse. Bluegrass. I need some good bluegrass for driving to Knoxville to see the inlaws.
simon and garfunkel is one i forgot to put on my list. thats how bad it is. though for me they fall into the category of had some albums and then lost them somewhere along the line. man, if i only had the albums i've lost over the years, id probably have a good 60% more than i do now.
in high school i was so broke that i tried to sell a bunch of my cds for three dollars a piece to a used cd store. they only bought reality bites and a shawn colvin album my aunt gave me before shawn colvin was popular at all. i actually liked that cd but didn't really like anything she's done since then.i often lend cds to my brother who then assumes they are his own: all of my nirvana cds,two pearl jam albums, greenday, guns and roses, aerosmith and several others have joined his collection.
in high school when i was going to my youth group a lot,a lot of people gave me really shitty cds. most of them i've given away to people who will actually listen to them.
other than those few incidences,i hold on to my cds pretty tightly.
i try to hang on tight, but i can't tell anyone, let alone my Sisters that they can't borrow my CD's.
i also have just had some bad luck. like i had every CD that Led Zeppelin put out except CODA in a case. i lost the case. i don't know how. it was in the car one second, then when i get home its nowhere. must have fallen out when somebody got out. or my sisters don't exactly treat my CD's as well as they could, and some get scratched before their time, etc.
Tom Waits
I had totally forgotten about this entree when I posted my desert island discs. I would begin writing a list, but it would be long and pointless since I can't be buying lots of CD's these days. Besides there are just too many to list. Okay, I'm done with my lame excuses.
Lucas, a simple answer to your Tom Waits "problem"...I've downloaded over 50 albums/shows. If your net connection makes this painful I'm willing to send cd's of mp3's to folks. It's worth it.
My list: (because "Everything else" doesn't quite cover it.
More Poi Dog Pondering
V.O.L.
Jethro Tull
Live Dylan (got the rest)
Those live moby disks a friend offered me once
Dead Milkmen
Buddy Guy
Bruce Cockburn
The Freddy Jones Band
Jeff Jones and the ghost monkeys
Future Sound of London
Cab Calloway
John Lee Hooker
...an a lot of music that was put out and not on the net yet.
I can't believe this site is still in operation. TW stomped MP3.com in a suit with some other musicians... I mean, I'm not unhappy... i'm just surprised.
This is mad crazy.
Also, they're not as good as the Waits site but they have a lot of good music, even if most of it is jam band stuff.

...and this is a new one I'm looking at. The login in part is scary...

I've found going to sites based in other countries are more dependable and have better stuff. I may have to lean Czech, and whatever language they speak in Malyasia. Speaking of which, if you can get past the scary part this place has a lot of links to files and music.. Pedro probably doesn't want this to turn in to a warez site, so I'll stop there.
I don't own the first, full length Clutch album. I even have the first EP with Impetus on it, Passive Restraints. Out of Print and everything.
I only have 2 Clutch albums - Clutch and Pure Rock Fury. when i have more money i will buy more Clutch. until then, im seeing them on the 21st. you should go Chester.
can this be the FEotD?anyway, I haven't really bought new music in a long time. I think in the last year, the only things I've bought that weren't vinyl or cassette tape were:
The Blood Brothers: Burn, Piano Island, Burn (I like it enough, but it hasn't caused any revolutions in my heart...)
Iron & Wine: The Rhythm and the Sea or whatever it's called. absolutely magnificent, BTW. these guys are really good. They're also playing The Abbey Pub on July 2nd. I'm hoping to go. anyone want in? I'll probably cross-post that date onto the other, more relevant thread...
Damien Jurado: i don't recall the title, but it's the one with 'Ohio' on it (thanks to phil for putting it on his mix disc)
SDRE: The Rising Tide it had been too long since I had heard it, and I was sick of looking through my stuff for my copy. so i broke down and bought another copy.
aside from those, I can't recall the last time I bought anything new. And I KNOW there is so much coming out that I need to hear, but just haven't.
anyway, does anybody care to make a top 10 or 20 list of essential albums released in the last 2 years? and I mean essential.
patty griffin 1000 kisses, hem rabbit songs, and ralph stanley as the ages roll on for me are pretty essential. especially 1000 kisses. she has a new one out that's pretty good too (i've only heard bits and pieces) but 1000 kisses is truly incredible. THere is obviously more, but those three come to my mind without a lot of work.
redvinegar, i don't know where here is
Tad, Nirvana, R.E.M.'s earliest records, Lou Reed, Beatles (mp3's don't count), Hum's last good album, Brian Eno, maybe some Kraftwerk (sometimes I think there music is boring), and espescially Phillip Glass.
