A fascinating article on coincidence. The above article talks about my friend from work, Bob Schwartz. Apparently 11 leaders in the field of microbiology were killed or died in strange and unusual, but seemingly unrelated, ways in November. (Bob's murder was orchestrated by his daughter and carried out by her friends, and has no mention of microbiology in the whys and wherefores). But that's just how I found it - it's about coincidence really and the importance the human mind puts on coincidences, which really aren't that strange at all. It's a really good read. But it brings me to my question - have you had any interesting or meaningful coincidences in your life? You know, of the type that you dreamed something and it happened, or you just happened to know when something was going to occur? Or you run into a friend from childhood in Baghdad while shopping for cheese? Anything of that sort? The subject fascinates me.

I'll combine mine into this one.... gar... I knew there was one. I searched for "coincidence" "small" "world" and didn't come up with it... We really need to implement a search feature on this thing.

Or some kind of map?, posted 17 Sep 2003 by nutella » (Fixture)

The old Zork BBS had that categorisation (corridors, rooms) thing. Maybe there should be some way of having a brief description with the list of Entreés (and it might help to have that in alphabetical order).

I'm not helping here. I should move this line of thought to <proj>Grilled BBS Help Sandwhich with Pickle</proj>.

Vodka, posted 24 Nov 2003 by smax » (Fixture)

Note the prosecutor's name is a very popular cheap brand of vodka sold in the US.

MOSCOW (Reuters) - A vodka-drinking competition in a southern Russian town ended in tragedy with the winner dead and several runners-up in intensive care.

"The competition lasted 30, perhaps 40 minutes and the winner downed three half-liter bottles. He was taken home by taxi but died within 20 minutes," said Roman Popov, a prosecutor pursuing the case in the town of Volgodonsk.

"Five contestants ended up in intensive care. Those not in hospital turned up the next day, ostensibly for another drink."

Popov said the director of the shop organizing this month's contest had been charged with manslaughter. He had offered 10 liters of vodka to the competitor drinking the most in the shortest time.

Russians drink the equivalent of 15 liters of pure alcohol per head annually, one of the highest rates in the world. Some experts estimate one in seven Russians is an alcoholic.
