More basic HTML for my hobos..., posted 22 Apr 2002 by pedro » (Staff)

Ok, HTML is a "markup language" which means you take plain old english, and add a bunch of goobers to it to make it look like what it's supposed to.

I think we'd all find things like bold text and italics useful, so I'm going to explain them for you.

To type something in bold, put <b> </b> around it, like so: <b>I'M BOLD</b>

To type something in italics, put <i> </i> around it, like so: <i>I'M IN ITALICS!</i>

Also, make use of the Preview button on these fill out forms, since you basically can't change posts to Entrees once they're posted.

You can also link directly to people's diaries by using the <person> tag, like this: <person>crackmonkey </person>

I have to do special mumbo-jumbo to make those symbols show up on the page -- normally they just disappear; they prefer to work behind the scenes and get angry when I make them stand up on stage like this. This also means that you shouldn't use greater-than or less-than in your posts, or it will not do what you want.

Other tags do other things. <br> will put a single line break where you put it down (you don't need to "pair" the br tag), and <tt> will do a "typewriter" font, which you can see that I used in the previous HTML primer on the Hobo Web Stew Entree, or whatever I called it.

Anyway, that's enough for now. Go forth, and wreak havoc! Metaphorically!

Maybe there should be a basic HTML tutorial on what the available markup tags do at that link since it is on the bottom of each page that includes an entry box. Of course that would a first for a virgule site since zork, badvogato, and advogato are all lacking that page.

non-specific topic specific entrees..., posted 27 Apr 2002 by pedro » (Staff)

I've noticed a lot of people have opened subject discussion entrees, like about books, or movies, or music. I think this is incredible, and is one of the things I want the bbs to do. But, and you might think this is anal of me, but some of the "description" section of the entrees talk about specific movies or books, etc, as though the description was the first post in the room. It seems to me that the description for "book" or "movie" or "music" entrees should be about books in general, and then the author of the entree can make a first post about whatever they want.

Since the authors can edit entrees, they can actually do some creative cutting and pasting and fix this if they want to. I would prefer that, but I won't be upset if people just don't feel like it.

Again, it's not a big deal, but somewhere down the road, it may make more sense for the description to not contain "topic-specific" material. *shrug*

hmmm, posted 28 Apr 2002 by baggins » (Fixture)

i realized my own error regarding this soon after i posted. however, i didn't realize that editing was an option. i will soon. i promise. but how can i edit the entree to be a General entree and then put the specifics in the First post of the entree?

YOu can't make it the first post. In that sense, you have to pick your poison. But it's easier to handle that disarray early on, rather than later.

i was thinking it brought some balance to the tastytronic force to have some specials on the left hand side of the page. i wonder what will warrant its own special?

That would be an interesting customisation, posted 30 Apr 2002 by nutella » (Fixture)

Something like a "Next Starbase XY003 concert is..." should be suitable for the Specials. It would be nice to have a cancel (by the author) facility that would move it from the menu card to the archive. I am guessing that a specified time-limit for display would be too complicated.

I do like the Specials (or the Articles or whatever) in this format. In Zork BBS they are underused and in Advogao overused. With the current placement and sizing on the menu card they have that kind of "Stop Press" immediacy.

well, ultimately, i'm not specifically concerned with what they are, posted 30 Apr 2002 by pedro » (Staff)

But I agree with Nutella, that they should be of "Stop Press!" nature. I was thinking about gig announcements, that kind of thing. But as you can see, practically anyone can create them, so if you have something that is really suitable for it, go ahead and make them.

Secondly, I'd like to add a timestamp to the diary entries... What do you guys think? I imagine I could probably add timestamps to the projects too, but maybe that's obnoxious. Or maybe timestamps are just obnoxious anyway.

multiple posts per day in the diary, posted 21 Nov 2002 by pedro » (Staff)

I'm responding to baggins diary post -- if you post more than once in your diary, only the newest post appears in the New Graffiti section -- so what you should do if you want to post more than once a day is click on your name, edit your last diary post, and do something like this:

---

So now I continue my post here, and then it will show up as one post.

---

3 hours later...

Eventually I want to change the code (when i upgrade the BBS's software) so that multiple posts show up in the New Graffiti list -- like, the last 30 diary posts show in order, like an entree. But I just need to take the time to figure that out. I've also thought about a different color scheme, more like George's Menu than the decor, which would be black, red, and blue text on a cream background... do you think you'd like that color scheme better? If there was a way to select which one you wanted that would make me happier... I like the browns and greens.

what did you do?

i wanted to keep the names standardized... whoa is me, posted 27 Nov 2002 by pedro » (Staff)

Ok, so anyway, ulyssess00 created the "debt" entree, and I talked to him about possibly changing the name to fit the "menu items" theme, rather than merely being "diner-related" (tipping and paying your check). Call me a stickler, but I feel like if I don't try to keep it in the theme, people won't really know that there is a theme... anyway, in the process of re-editing the database, I accidentally (because I was too tired and not paying attention) blew away the "recent" lists for entrees, which means that all the "next" buttons are going to be out of order...

Anyway, just post where you want to and it will eventually straighten itself out. Sorry... I realize that it's a pretty minor thing to make a big edit for (especially when there are other entrees that do not fit the "form"), but I really would prefer to keep the entrees as entrees. If it's just diner-related stuff, then it loses the feel of being "a menu" and I'd prefer to work to maintain that theme. Anyway, ulyssess00 likes the new title (he came up with it) so we're all good.

I really need to upgrade my installation of virgule, but I don't look forward to hacking the sources again, although it's really not a big deal, i'm just lazy.

I think yeah, the <strike>two</strike> three things we'd really like:

1. diary entries in "new graffitti" to appear as they are posted, not one per person. This makes it hard to respond to diaries in diaries.

2. titles for diaries

3. specials should autojump the way that entree's do when you click on (2 new) or whatever.

These might already be in the sourcecode, and/or I'd be willing (maybe with crackmonkey's help) to hack in the recentlog stuff for articles too.

Something that baggins brought up that I think woudl be really cool is a feature where you can basically send "bbs mail" to people. It could show up inbetween "new grafitti" and "newest users", and could work like a diary -- just a long list of entries that are eventually archived.

This isn't me expecting you to do all this, but just kind of expressing all my mod_virgule thoughts in one post. I don't even know the current state of the code. Gary, is it still in CVS on zork, or where's the most current location?

Latest code, posted 17 Jan 2003 by gary » (Staff)

The latest code is in Ghostscript CVS, which is Advogato's tree. You shouldn't need to hack the sources since I made loads of things configurable: I actually had a config file somewhere that would run Tastytronic from Advogato HEAD.

Diary entries in "new graffitti" to appear as posted would be fairly simple to do, titles for diaries less so (but I'd like it to happen so I'd be interested in doing it). I don't know about autojumping specials but it shouldn't be that hard (it might already be there).

Anyway, I'll dig out the config.xml file tomorrow and mail it to you...

updating the diner..., posted 21 Jan 2003 by pedro » (Staff)

I'm planning on doing a software update to the diner in the next few days (within the week). While we're doing that, we have an opportunity for some change... I could change the graphics scheme. One alternative I was thinking of was a black text on a creme background, with reds and blues for certification levels. That way it would look more like George's menu, but less like George's itself. As far as I know, there's no way to have a selectable CSS page (is there, Gary?) Anyway, what do people think? Do you like the dark, earthy tones? Or would you rather have a more stark, straightforward color scheme? I lean towards keeping it the way it is unless there is an option to change between dark/light, since I like these colors better. But I'm open to hearing you folks' thoughts.

Keep it simple, posted 21 Jan 2003 by blvdgirl » (Fixture)

And that's new. In the old mod_virgule I had to change all that in the code by hand (not hard, but tedious) -- now it's abstracted out into a config file -- a config file that gary even took the time to write FOR me. Man. How much easier could it be?

"New" Grafitti, posted 22 Jan 2003 by blvdgirl » (Fixture)

So how long does grafitti stay new? Will old graffiti eventually cease appearing under new graffiti? Will there be a "next" arrow at the bottom of the page to indicate that there is older new graffiti?

Don't get me wrong, guys, I like the multiple posting thing. But, if I don't check the site for a week am I going to miss out on everyone's last post? Is there anyway to make sure that each user's last post will remain available under new grafitti until they post again? (I know that everyone's graffiti is archived on their customer page, but that would take a lot of clicking...)

yep., posted 22 Jan 2003 by pedro » (Staff)

You will miss their last post if you don't check the site for a week -- but with the old way, you already did miss them, since you only saw the last thing they posted, even if they posted 7 long entries that week while you were away.

But, since you do have a point, I upped the displayed entries to 50 on the new graffiti page. That should help laggers miss less.

Otherwise, you'll just have to check people's diaries individually through the Customer link to see if your favorite customer has updated their diary while you were away.

nah pedro, its not the same computer.

if you dial up the world events page on neoacerbitas' copmuter, it has the "There's some big scary stuff going on in the world." intro and the cnn.com link, and the very first entry is yours, the one marked "El-Hilarity."

and "movies a la mode" still wont work on my computer... what i see on my screen is kind of hard to describe. i looks like someone went into the html and entered about 500 < p >'s in between every line of text. so many that scrolling down is pointless. and if i click "back," the diner home page has the same problem, as do all pages i attempt to view with that window afterwards, wether its by entering a new adress, or by clicking "back" to see pages i've already viewed. i have to "X" out of that window and open a new one, where everything is a-o-k again... until i click on "movies a la mode" again... and then the madness resumes.

good thing there's four computers in our apartment, or else i'd be deprived of movie gossip.

I just did "testing" with the browsers at "hand". Now where's my complementary "get out of jail free" card?

IE: No problems at all in IE 5.5 and 6.02 (Win98/ME/2k/XP) or IE 5.2 (Mac). This is my main browser for browsing, the only problem I've seen on this site was while posting in the "egg in your beer" entree, which apparently happened across the board, so hey.

Safari 1.0 beta v51: "Movies a la Mode" crashed Safari the first time I tried to open it; the second time it loaded correctly, and further browsing failed to cause any kind of error.

Netscape 4.6: looked ugly (no span for you), but very readable. No crashes/glitches.

Summary: No problems* here. Apparently even old versions of Netscape work fine, so that's always an option. And many people praise with great praise the praiseworthiness of opera as another alternative (can't say, never used)

latent DHCP reservations, posted 29 Jan 2003 by alaric » (Fixture)

neoacerbitas, I believe this problem is the result of your computer thinking it's name is that of the last computer to claim that ip address. That's my theory anyway, i'm not sure how much technical merit it has. For instance: right now Francis (my desktop mac) thinks its network address is dhorner2.northpark.edu, which it definitely is not, and the CSTiBook claims no name, and goes simply by 10.21.0.71. As far as the terminal goes, to make it less annoying, you can hardcode the hostname that it displays in /etc/hostconfig

Gary, could you or someone hack in "direct links" to entries in entrees and articles the way that they exist in diaries? I imagine it wouldn't be that hard, and *might* take a look at the code myself... it would be nice to be able to say: "you said right here blahbadiblah..."

For that matter, is there a compelling reason that Articles have a numeric title as opposed to a "human readable" title like projects?

My stats for the articles shows off this difference all too well.

entries in entrees, posted 25 Mar 2003 by lukas » (Fixture)

pedro, each entry already has an anchor, you just have to view source to see what to link to. So I can link to your post about welcome winning the nethack competition. It is, however, a pain to link to old posts. Adding a link to each title would make it easier. Or you could add a post number to each title that was linked, although I don't think that would look all that good.

sticky cookies fix, posted 26 Mar 2003 by pedro » (Staff)

If your cookies are sticking around (meaning you can't log out), try going through your Internet Options (or Preferences if you are using a Good Browser) and see if there is a way to manage the cookies for your browser.

If there is, then you need to go in and delete the one for bbs.tastytronic.net.

If there isn't, on windows, click Start | Run and in the dialog, type:

c:\windows\cookies\

...and a window should open with a load of files. Find the one for bbs.tastytronic.net and blow it away.

If you are using a Netscape-derived browser, but cannot find a way to change your cookies, do this:

Click Start | Find | Files or FOlders

and search for "cookies.txt"

Then when it comes up, open it, and delete the ENTIRE LINE that shows bbs.tastytronic.net.

If you're using a Mac, it should work similarly to my instructions, but maybe not.

Good luck.

Links within projects, posted 26 Mar 2003 by nutella » (Fixture)

On another mod_virgule instance I tried linking to specific non-diary posts using the trick that lukas mentioned. This was okay if the post was relatively recent but the problem is that the links were within-document (rather than to some full URL) so if you had your account configured to only show a limited number of posts (not including the link target) the link would fail. This also means that it was difficult (impossible?) to see very old postings to a project. This is not the case with diaries as links can pull up all possible entries.

I'm trying to remember how long ago it was that I broke the other mod_virgule instance by having >100 diary posts....

1. Company firewall
As well as obviously non-work-related sites there is no access to zork (crackmonkey, loyalty etc.) or some useful sites (burnallgifs). I am blocked from ssh/scp. The latest restriction is a block of telnet or outgoing ftp. As crackmonkey pointed out some sysadmins have waaay too much time on their hands.

2. A filter site
The content on blocked sites is readable, after a fashion, with web pages with filters such as The T'inator. I understand that there are sites out there that allow plain text redirection of blocked web pages but I don't know of any. In any case this doesn't allow me write-access so I can't play. I wonder if it would become more prevalent if there was a shorthand way for doing this, maybe something like [PERSON]nutella#entry[/PERSON] or even if this would be useful. This may also require that there be an option when viewing a diary to see the entry numbers more easily than looking at the link text while having the mouse over the >> (or viewing source). Nutella, this has bothered me for a while, but somehow I never get round to fixing it. How about if I do this:
  1. Diary entries in the recentlog grow a » and/or the person's name displays the entry number when you hover the pointer over it.
  2. The <person> tag grows an optional attribute (entry or similar)
Sound good?

Oooh..., posted 30 Apr 2003 by nutella » (Fixture)

I'd not thought about part 1 as I automatically pull up the person's diary page if I am going to link to them. Yes, the ">>" on the recent page would be tres cool.

As I admitted in the earlier post, this may not be useful to very many folk. I'm just being; a) selfish (when I look back through my old diary entries I can click on my link and be taken to exactly the text to which I was refering), b) anal/precise/finnicky. If you just want another excuse to dabble then I would certainly use the result but if it would be a pain and you have better things to do then I'll certainly not complain (I've already had some customisation fulfilment here).

Do you have any plans for implementing Entree links in some form (ones that would work on invisible entries)? Or would that require too much of a radical redesign? (now why don't I answer that myself and go and look at the code?)

diner outage pending!, posted 16 May 2003 by pedro » (Staff)

Ok, so, as we read about here, Speakeasy is upgrading it's infrastructure in Chicago, which means some kind of outage is pending in the near future.

Unfortunately, I'll be heading up North come Saturday...

These things always have a way of happening, don't they.

Anyway, the plus side is that flynn's uplink is going to be doubled. Anyway just warning you -- if the diner disappears for no reason, don't worry. We'll be back just as soon as we can, and when we do come back, we should be faster than ever.

some technical difficulties, posted 21 May 2003 by inkblot » (Fixture)

sorry about the extended outage, it should have only been a few hours at most. the trouble was that the automatic switchover script that pedro and i wrote didn't quite work.

i just got back from pedro's though, and all should be well now. if there's any trouble, let me know and i'll see what i can do.

I don't know if this makes sense, but I like the fact that people can randomly find their way in here if they're looiking for the right thing (ericchancellor), but I also like the idea of people having some amount of privacy.

re: total block, posted 13 Jun 2003 by pedro » (Staff)

If people really wanted it, I would go for it. But I like the fact that right now the people who should find the diner can, and the people who shouldn't don't. Usually that just means not using real names if you're interested in privacy.

But really, if a majority of people wanted total block, I'd go for it. So speak up if you do.

we should be unashamed of the things we say in here. at least to the extent that we're open to people surfing their way in here on searches and things. if you don't want a specific word or name to be googled, then alter it.

What if George's had a bouncer? would it have been as cool of a model for a bbs?

I'm not ashamed of what I say in here. I have a couple of pathetic female internet stalkers, but frankly, if they see that I'm happy and doing well, it doesn't bother me in the slightest, and I do keep things I don't want the world to know off the diner.

repair, posted 7 Jul 2003 by pedro » (Staff)

The DSL was down for most of the day yesterday, as you might have noticed. This is due largely to the rain and the fact that somewhere between my house and irving park there is a hole in the telephone cable. I'm sure it won't take SBC long to find that hole... if I can even talk to a human being.

Anyway, today I'm working on repairing some poorly (and often mis-) configured stuff on flynn. None of it really pertains to the diner. But I just wanted to report in on the outage yesterday.

official outage explanation... most of this will be meaningless to the diner denizens., posted 5 Dec 2003 by pedro » (Staff)

There was a bad exploit for Linux out so I needed to upgrade my kernel ASAP... unfortunately, I had trouble with my kernel upgrade... if that wasn't obvious.

Basically, it seemed like 2.4.23 didn't like my AIC 7xxx devices, but I also made a few mistakes and deleted some "junk" which meant that when I rebooted back into 2.4.20 I had no network and because of gcc upgrades would have to completely recompile 2.4.20 to make that work, so I just wrestled with 2.4.23 until I got it to go.

Sorry about the downtime.

In the meantime, I migrated /home to the RAID, which is now mounted under /mnt/RAID (instead of the obtuse /home/pedro/z/). That means that /var/www and /home are both on the RAID now.

Let me know if there are any problems.

Well, that's the last of the bits...

flynn is now running everything off RAID with the exception of /boot/.

Since /home and /var/www were already on the RAID, this shouldnt' really cause any issues... the plus side is that flynn now has oodles of space that it didn't use to have available. We shouldn't have any random outages of space for a long time now.

Please let me know if you encounter any problems.

Question..., posted 15 Jan 2004 by pedro » (Staff)

I'm playing around with adding a page that will show when the last time was a user looked at the Diner. It would be a page like the stats page that would show, in order of appearance, when the last person checked, and maybe count pageloads or something like that.

It would be cool because it would show relatively how often people check -- but it would also be a slight "invasion of privacy" in that some people might not want it to be public how often they check the Diner (either becuase they check it way too often or becuase they hardly ever check).

I don't really care -- it wouldn't bother me to show how often I check, nor would it bother me to see that captain only checks every two months -- and I think it's neat to add features like that and just see statistics and crap like that.

But I want to be sensitive to the customers. What do you folks think?

I wouldn't mind, posted 15 Jan 2004 by BigJ » (Fixture)

but then everyone would find out that I check the board a couple times an hour during the day (give or take)

Besides, if people want "privacy" they can always log out of the diner before they start browsing around it.

I'd like it, posted 15 Jan 2004 by baggins » (Fixture)

I mean, as far as the parallel between The Tastytronic Diner, and the Infamous Diner IRL, when you walk in, people notice you're here, more or less. even if you're just sitting in your own booth. and we know how long you were here for. and after you left, chances are good that somebody stopped in and asked abou you. so, it seems like it's a fair thing to do. I certainly have nothing to hide. I know there are days when I post a bunch of stuff throughout the day, showing that I'm extremely bored and free and have plenty of time to snoop around here. and other times I read and don't write anything for days at a time, which shows I don't know what. so, I personally don't mind people knowing, and I'd like to see the stat...

...for some reason, some users do not register, and users using a textmode browser (like lukas) do not register, so I need to change what I'm using for my triggers... I'll do that today, but then it looks like we're up and running!

oh, also,, posted 17 Jan 2004 by pedro » (Staff)

It updates your status when YOU trigger it -- so for example, marmora will still show up as a Tourist until he reloads a page on the Diner that triggers it. That way the last.cgi only has to update one person's record each time it's loaded, rather than everyone. And normally, YOU aren't going to care or notice if someone else's record isn't completely up to date.

Every time you load the main page or the graffiti page, it adds one to that number.

It shoudlnt'be related to the cgi, but maybe your cookie. Try editing /acct/lukas/profile.xml and changing the information in your cookie. You can just edit it arbitrarily, but I'm not sure if there's a max length or not.
