This is a place for you to explain a bit about who you are. This serves a couple of purposes. One, it tells other customers a bit about you (and will help them to know if they know you in person on not). Secondly, it is occasionally fun to talk about yourself a bit.

It would be appropriate to shout-out to a long, lost but re-discovered pal on this entree.

Who is blvdgirl?, posted 25 Feb 2003 by blvdgirl » (Fixture)

Hi, my name is Amy. I went to North Park from 95-99. I majored in English and minored in Theater (not officially but I still say so). I occasionally went to Georges, but not that often because the smoke drove me away. Also, I was a bit overcommitted as far as extra-curriculars went and a true commitment to Georges required time. I did occassionally hang out on the Burgh Hall stoop and liked to do crosswords in the lobby with Baggins. I generally went down into Java once a week or so... I was around when they founded the Lampost.

What were those extra-curriculars? Choir, 4 years. RA, 2 years. Senate, 2 years. North Branch, 1 year. Plays, 2 years. Newspaper, 1 year. Track, 1 year. Homecoming Chair, 1 year. (I may have forgotten something, but who cares at this point?) I worked in the library (4 years) and at the pool (3 years) in addition to sitting at the Burgh Hall Desk (2 years). Looking back, I think that someone was probably slipping me amphetamines.

I spent my college summers at Covenant Point in Upper Michigan. I still think it's the most beautiful place in the world.

I now live in the middle of nowhere New Mexico and teach high school English.

Who is Meat Loaf?, posted 25 Feb 2003 by pedro » (Staff)

b. Marvin Lee Aday, 27 September 1951, Dallas, Texas, USA. Meat Loaf strongly claims this date of birth, but it has also been suggested as 1947. The name Meat Loaf originated at school, when, aged 13, he was christened "Meat Loaf" by his football

coach, owing to his enormous size and ungainly manner. Two years later his mother died of cancer, and fights with his alcoholic father grew worse. He moved to Los Angeles in 1967 and formed Popcorn Blizzard, a psychedelic rock band that toured the club circuit, opening for acts including the Who, Ted Nugent and the Stooges. In 1969 Meat Loaf successfully auditioned for a role in Hair, where he met soul vocalist Stoney. Stoney and Meat Loaf recorded a self-titled album in 1971, which spawned the minor Billboard chart hit, "What You See Is What You Get". Hair closed in New York in 1971, and Meat Loaf found new work in Rainbow (1972-74) and More Than You Deserve!, a musical written by Jim Steinman. He then took the part of Eddie in the 1975 film version of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. In 1976, he was recruited by Ted Nugent to sing lead vocals on his Free For All set, after which he joined up with Steinman once more in the famous US satirical comedy outfit, the National Lampoon Roadshow. Meat Loaf and Steinman struck up a working musical relationship and started composing a grandiose rock opera.

After a long search, they found Epic Records and producer Todd Rundgren sympathetic to their ideas and demo tapes. Enlisting the services of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, they recorded Bat Out Of Hell in 1977. This was pieced together around the high camp of the title track, an operatic horror melodrama that saw Meat Loaf raging against nature, and "Paradise By The Dashboard Light", with Ellen Foley providing female accompaniment. The album was ignored for the first six months after release, although Meat Loaf toured extensively, supporting Cheap Trick, among others. Eventually the breakthrough came, and Bat Out Of Hell rocketed towards the top of the charts in country after country. It stayed in the UK and US album charts for 395 and 88 weeks, respectively, and sold in excess of 30 million copies worldwide, making it one of the biggest-selling album releases of all time. However, with success came misfortune. Meat Loaf split with his manager, David Sonenberg, causing all manner of litigation. He was also drinking heavily, unable to cope with his new-found but barely anticipated stardom, and lost his voice. He lost his songwriter too, as Steinman left for the solo release of what had been mooted as a thematic follow-up to Bat Out Of Hell - Bad For Good: "I spent seven months trying to make a follow-up with him, and it was an infernal nightmare. He had lost his voice, he had lost his house, and he was pretty much losing his mind".

After a three-year gap, during which Meat Loaf voluntarily declared himself bankrupt, the eagerly anticipated follow-up, Dead Ringer, was released. Again, it used Steinman's compositions, this time in his absence, and continued where Bat Out Of Hell left off, comprising grandiose arrangements, choruses and spirited rock 'n' roll. "Dead Ringer For Love", a duet with the uncredited Cher, made the Top 5 in the UK and the album hit number 1, but it only dented the lower end of the Top 50 Billboard album chart. This was, seemingly, the last time Meat Loaf would be able to use Steinman's sympathetic songwriting skills, and the consequent decline in standards undoubtedly handicapped the second phase of his career. Concentrating on Europe, relentless touring helped both Midnight At The Lost And Found and Bad Attitude, his first album for new label Arista Records, to creep into the UK Top 10 album chart. Nevertheless, this represented a significant decline in popularity compared with his Steinman-penned albums. Blind Before I Stop saw Meat Loaf teaming up with John Parr for the single "Rock'n'Roll Mercenaries", which, surprisingly, was not a hit. The album was, however, his strongest post-Steinman release and featured a fine selection of accessible, blues-based hard-rock numbers.

In live performances, things had never been better. Meat Loaf's band included Bob Kulick (brother of Kiss guitarist Bruce Kulick), and ex-Rainbow drummer Chuck Burgi. They delivered an electrifying show that ran for nearly three hours. Recorded at London's Wembley Stadium, Meat Loaf Live emerged in 1987, and featured raw and exciting versions of his finest songs. By this time, Meat Loaf was also a veteran of several movies, including Roadie and Americathon. Apart from re-releases and compilations, however, he maintained a recording silence well into the 90s. He had signed a new contract with Virgin Records in 1990, and as rumours grew that he was once again working with Steinman, the media bandwagon began to roll. Released in 1993, Bat Out Of Hell II: Back Into Hell, from its title onwards displayed a calculated, stylistic cloning of its precursor. The public greeted the familiarity with open arms, propelling the first single, "I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)", to number 1 in both the USA and UK, its parent album performing the same feat. Though critics could point at the formulaic nature of their approach, Meat Loaf had no doubts that by working with Steinman again, he had recaptured the magic: "Nobody writes like Jim Steinman. All these things - bombastic, over the top, self-indulgent. All these things are positives." Steinman was noticeably absent from Welcome To The Neighborhood, apart from two old compositions. Instead, the excellent pulp magazine-style package contained songs that sounded exactly like Steinman's work, particularly "I'd Lie For You (And That's The Truth)" (a UK number 2 hit single) and "If This Is The Last Kiss", both written by leading songwriter Diane Warren.

alright.
my name is jeremy. some people call me by my last name, which is wagner. im probably bigger than you. but i wouldn't hurt a fly. unless it was hurting a smaller, weaker fly for no reason.

i have called chicago home since '91, when my family moved there from florida. i went to high school w/ old possumus, BigJ, instintcofi, juice, Dangersheep, fook, welcome, and abaddon. (though not the same school. but we were all buds since then.) i also met Chester through church youth group then.

a few summers were spent at covenant point bible camp, where i met people like blvdgirl, smax, toastboy, and hemingstein.

i went to Covenant Bible College in 96/97. from there i went to Joliet Junior College for a semester, and then on to North Park. i was there in 98/99 but had to leave halfway through spring semester because some loans fell through, and i couldn't afford to go. that sucked, as i was having a really great semester. wihle i was there, i met most of the rest of you, including (but not limited to): raskol, mercurymouth, barefootjumper, lieutenant, pedro, dogmanphil, ulyssess, neoacerbitas, grandpa, cinnamongirl, alaric, freakinfreak, insectaturk, Dietrich, pmack, misslady, and nunnybun.

i have been a regular of George's Restaraunt and Ice Cream Parlor since 1992, along with some of the cats mentioned above from the high school days. in that time, through the regulars there, or from the NPU cats, i have been acquainted in some degree with: captain, pedrosoldlady, Hernando, loser, inkblot, moonboots, ake, josekenobi, lukas, and andronicus. the rest of you, perhaps i have met you briefly. perhaps not. but the names on the list don't ring any bells at this hour. don't be insulted if i didn't mention you and i should have. just smack me the next time you see me.

nowadays, i drive a van around and take people places and stuff. and i get paid to do it, though not extremely well.

i love music. i love reading. i love writing. i love looking in your eyes. i love movies. i love being productive in the morning (though its rare). i love my friends. i love playing poker.

i hate bad music. i hate insensitivity. i hate being forced into some perceived construct of 'gender wars'. i hate that im lazy. i hate hate. i hate death. i hate war. i hate injustice. i hate substance abuse. i hate blockbuster video.

whoa watch out, posted 26 Feb 2003 by welcome » (Fixture)

Hey all, my name is Pat. I started hanging out at George's around 1995 because it was right down the street from Von Steuben. What a beginning! At Von I met DangerSheep, oldpossumus, BigJ, Fook, and Juice. I also met quite a number of people (baggins, instantcofi, captain, pedro, toastboy, loser, mercurymouth, raskol, dogmanphil, Dietrich, andronicus, nunnybun, alaric, Hemingstein and probably some others who I've since forgotten and now hate me) just from visiting George's. Wow.

This sentence is dedicated to abaddon who I've known longer than anybody that I still see these days.

I work for a company that develops information management software for Chicago Public Schools. Fun fun fun! Generally when I'm not working or sleeping, I enjoy reading, playing video games, and listening to/making bad attempts at all kinds of music (doing all these thing simultaneously is ideal).

And for photo time quiz fun, here is a picture of me in a hat, and here is a scary and unflattering artist's rendition of me doing my Aphex face.

George is Dead, posted 26 Feb 2003 by OutsideInfluence » (Fixture)

My name is Hernando, and I know more about everyone on this site than I should cinsidering that:

A.) I never once visited the fabled George's (which I hear has been altered significantly under new ownership, and might as well be a Denny's now)

B.) I never attended North Park University, and thus certainly never stayed in Burgh Hall.

C.) I have only lived in Chicago since June 2002.

It's strange how quickly life can change for a guy like me. I was living in Milwaukee -- trapped in a medeocre existance of my own making. I needed a change. I was going to move to Philadelphia to stay with my cousins there and make a new start for myself, until that fateful day. I was just looking for good conversation. AOL chat rooms are usually bereft of any of the decent conversation one finds say here, for instance. That January day 2002 I went into an Astrology chat room and struck up a conversation with a very interesting girl whom I thought was named Sarah, but ended up being our very own Cinnamongirl using her twin's AOL account. Before long we were flirting and she asked if she could call me, and I gave up the digits. Next thing I knew, I couldn't even remember why I was going to Philly. After several visits to Chitown, I knew that this girl was too good to be true. She was smart, funny, gorgeous, and charming to boot. Six months (and many weekend dates) later I had moved to Chicago to be with the LOML (love of my life).

And through Cinnamongirl I met most of you at a Red Vinnegar show. Pedro was already a well respected singer from the tracks on his CD I had heard. I met mercurymouth, raskol, josekenobi, oldpossumus, barefootjumper, baggins, nunnybun all on that night I believe. Later I would meet ulysees00 at Dave K's party, and instantcofi at a Mexican restaurant. Some of you I know by reputation only, so behave yourselves. I'm joking, of course. Some of you I know only through this site like blvdgirl, smax, neoacerbitas, and BigJ, but I've seen pictures of most of you.

I chose the handle OutsideInfluence, because I'm not someone you went to college with, but I feel that I am one of you in spirit. I represent what new people can offer this tight-knit circle of friends, so don't be too harsh on newbies.

I am Isaac from Chicago, but born in Washington where my heart yearns for. I miss the mountains something fierce.

I am even bigger than baggins, I think, it changes often with us right wags? It seems that one is larger than the other every few years, :)

I am an award winning biology major, ha ha ha, I just like to type that, I won the Bob Tofty award for excellence in environmental biology. Which was actually cool since they moved the date it is given to December just so they could give it to me, and they gave away a few extra awards too since they couldn't just give me one at the biology dinner, funny I haven't thought about that in months and it suddenly popped into my head, odd...

I know most people on the Diner, and don't feel like typing all their names. I've been going to George's off and on since I was 5, and regularly since about 8th grade, when Kerry, Greg (both not on the diner, but known by many) and I started drinking coffee there. That was somewhere around 1992. George and Helen are my surrogate parents, and I was bummed to hear they were going to be in Greece when I got married, but I got over it. I moved to Chicago in 1990 when my dad started as pastor of NPCC, and many here will attest to the fact that the pulpit has missed him since he left, if you have ever had the privilege of hearing one of my dad's sermons consider yourself blessed, not enough people did. I am newly married, which is the best thing ever, and working for the William Wrigley Jr. Company as a flavor analyst, which does not involve gum chewing if you must know, it mainly chemical analysis on peppermint oils and fruit extracts, but it smells nice most of the time. And that is where I am now, and must get back to work. I'll add more if I think of it. Oh and Pat rocks!!

I won't go into a long spiel about me but I'm just now figuring out who some of these peoples are that I know in person. Last night i just figured out who blvdgirl is, and this morning I realized who Chester is. I sorta know most of the george's crowd and a few other random #tron peoples. At first I was wary about using me real name, but the two random people from my high school found me through here. So the rough summary of my life: born in kansas, raised in CO; graduated NPC (not U) in 1997 and worked there from 1999-2001 as sole web lackey. Sometime during those years I played in bands like Big Like Betty, Taco, sugarfriedsupero's (i think that's what they called it), the north park jazz band, the project, big backyard, and various failed projects. I don't write much music but moonboots and I sent a tape to Ake in Brasil once that had a song entitled Big Green Angel on it. I think it's my best work ever. 16 months or so after I matriculated I married the lovely and talented karna anne and shortly after we got an alaskan malamute named dakota and we've been a happy family ever since. also in there somewhere i worked at a defense contractor (kaman), a law firm in chicago (FBF&K), NPU, Covenant Heights, a high school portrait photographer, and the man (my current job). I now live just outside the nation's capitol in downtown silver spring where there are condos going up left and right so it feels just like chicago. karna attends american U where she will get a law degree (jd) and a masters in international hoo haw and then I can live the good life as a house husband. visitors are always welcome, we've got a pullout couch and very friendly dog. Things I like that I don't do near enough: hiking, climbing (I need a new rope though), cycling, photography (have you used the old darkroom yet pedro?), road trips, making music. So I guess that wasn't so brief...back to the grind.

There are very few people here I've actually met., posted 27 Feb 2003 by dex » (Fixture)

I'm Jen. I went to HS with Pedro, though he graduated in 94 and I in 95. We did musicals, drama, band, choir, etc. together. I think some acedemic thing with radioing in quiz shows for one year too, if I recall. Anyway, I've always been a drama / music geek, and proud of it. I still am - I'm in an upcoming show at my temple which should be fun, if not very good, and I do costume design for various theaters in the area, plus I'm the technical director of my temple's deama group.

I went to Winona State University from 1995 - 1998, studying theater and writing. I left WSU, moved to Minneapolis for a year, intending to transfer to U of M, but I never did because I got a job out in DC writing for a non-profit organization, and actually getting published. I got engaged to Jay, the most wonderful man to ever grace my world, about a month after I moved here, and married to him a year later. They had tuition benefits so I decided to go to George Mason University to finish my undergrad. I took a 1 year break when I was pregnant with Anna, and during the first six months of her life. I'm STILL a senior and at the rate I'm going (2 classes a semester) I should finish either next spring or the spring after. Once I'm done with BA I'll get my masters in Elementary Education. I don't know if you've noticed, but I personally hold very conservative values for myself and my family, though politically I am a liberal. I feel it's my job to raise my children to be happy, healthy, and with the benefit of having mom home with them in their formative years, hence decising to teach elementary ed, so I can be with my kids after school. I won't even start working until all children that are going to be had are in 1st grade.

So the people I know here are: JT (who has only posted once, and he only knows me and pedro) pedro, anna (sister anna, not alh), shredzilla, and I think that might be it. I *may* have met one or two of you in passing when I visited pedro a couple of times in Chicago, during college. I don't recall if I did.

And for reference: this is Anna and me and this is Jay and me.

My name is Matt. Currently I'm a Army reservist second lieutenant with career aspirations of becoming God's permanent staff weenie in the Army, by which I mean a chaplain. I'm back in Chicago at North Park Seminary after spending 2.5 years at North Park University from which I graduated in 1998, and spent from July 1999 to May 2000 enslaved to the university's Admissions department. I was born in northwestcentral Pennsylvania in this country's bicentennial year. I know a lot of the people here due to my addiction to George's blueberry pancakes with a side of fries and a chocolate milkshake. Others here I know by face but we've never really been formally introduced. I have a B.A. in English from North Park, the same degree as oldpossumus hemingstein, raskol, and blvdgirl, all of whom I think I've argued in class with. I desk sat in Burgh Hall in the fall and early winter of 1998. After bouncing around Chicago and really getting myself into debt, I enlisted in the Army in August 2000, spent the next four months doing pushups in sand, sawdust, mud, and my own bodily fluids at Fort Knox before completing training and going to my first duty station with the 1st Infantry Division overseas in Vilseck Germany. While there I fell in love (again) with my wife Jennifer and we were married January 5, 2002. In May of 2002 I was selected by the Chaplain Accessions Board to become a chaplain candidate, discharged from the Army, accepted a commission as a second lieutenant, and again snapped up by the Army. I'm a recovering liberal, a practicing curmudgeon, and a sometimes fair poet, and an aspiring sitcom husband.

Spent my freshman year at Depaul as a finance major. Three calculus classes later, spent my next couple years at Columbia College as a screenwriting major. A baby came with long time girlfriend, Mary, and college is now on hold whilst the better half finishes at Northeastern.

I grew up on pop culture. Memorized many Grateful Dead songs by the age of 4 because that's all my dad listened to. Got extremely pissed off when Rick Sutcliffe lost his only game in 1984, but watched every game of the heartbreaking pennant that year (i was 5). Listened to B96 every day when it wasn't crap when I was 6. Beat Super Mario Brothers and Dragon's Lair at the arcade when I was 7, and begged my mom to take me to Rain Man when i was 9, and so on. I got into the diner when I was visting with pedro over the Christmas holidays in Chicago.

I attended the infamous NPU from 96-2000. I got my degree in Theatre and Physics, and so I know most of you from classes and hanging out n stuff. I was the resident theatre geek at NPU, passing my legacy on to ulyssess when I left. I spent a year working in hotel management after graduation until I came out Montana for an MFA in Science and Natural History Filmmaking. I'm a film and TV geek too, as you all have probably picked up on by now. So I'll probably graduate in 2004. I'm starting up a production company for science films and other interesting stuff.

Other interesting tidbits about me: my special super power is that I don't sleep. When my body refuses to accept this, it's always at bizarre times, like today when I laid down for a 30 minute nap and slept for 8 hours. I have four younger sisters who are all amazing people. (And we all look exactly alike; it's creepy) I like to read a lot; I was an English minor at NPU, dubious though that distinction may be. My favorite author is Stephen Lawhead, my favorite compaser is probably Steven Sondheim. I'm focusing on my career right now, which is a nice way of saying that I don't have a girlfriend. I play some mad-style Boggle, and I was a Burgh desk sitter too.

I can't think of anything else interesting to say. That's always been my problem: I can always find something to say, but it's not always interesting.

She was the nice girl that worked in the old library a couple years ago. She is very smilely and was usually quiet because the library made her sick often to the point where she was usually without a voice. She does silly things now.

After my chicagoland stint I went to collge in Syracuse, NY and learned why people are evil. That's another story... After escaping upstate NY with a BFA in computer graphics I camped out in Maine until I got a job at a ski resort being their web guy. I'm Nate. I hail from Brighton, Michigan... near Ann Arbor. I came to Chicago in 1997 and lived on campus in Lincoln Park while I attented school at Depaul University. In 2001 I graduated, moved to Uptown, and met pedro through UFO. That summer, he and I coordinated the protests of Dmitri Sklyarov's arrest and we got to be great friends through that experience. Mostly from going to redvinegar shows and hanging around George's I know for sure that I've met baggins, dogmanphil, oldpossums, andronicus, and ulyssess00. I know psuda, jordanb, lukas, and alaric from UFO. I know sneakums, CrackMonkey, Zen, drwiii, and emad from #tron on slashnet. I know captain, DangerSheep, and probably others from various quakefests. And I know elise from staying at her place in San Francisco with pedro. I have a sneaking suspicion that I have actually met a lot more people here, but haven't made the connection between nick and face.

Sorry about the morbid title way back there, everyone. You see, back in Milwaukee (and other places, I'm sure) there are chains of corner diner's called George's. I thought that your George's was one of these, and not the mom and pop operation that it is. My bad.

because Hernando is kind of pissed that I posted that picture, because the real one looks much much better, with the shadows and definition and all. And he doesn't like that picture because he said he "rushed through it," since I was fiddling like a five year old, and I kept saying to "make my mouth look bigger than it really is," which defies the point of a realistic portrait. It is amazing (not that he would say that, as he is modest), it looks like a photograph. I posted that from a photocopy of the original, the copy was scanned and then made into a bmp file. It's like the whole three times removed from the Platonic ideal thing, and I see that now. He commented that he is a "professional scanner" and will re-do it and replace this one. Or maybe replace it with a real photograph of both of us to kill two entries with one stone.

Yet another reason Denny cannot join the Diner--if he posted a photograph of himself on this entree, different than the Ebay one 'cause that's already been ridiculed into the ground--he KNOWS there would be 500 posts making fun of it.

that picture is really good. obviously, its a scan. but that doesn't detract from its awesomeness. it's well done, and i think hernando is a good artist. but, i would never complain about seeing a picture of the two of you, either.

Seriously though, I went their when I was like 14 for the first time, and now I'm 22. I was born and raised here on Chicago's lovely North west side. Jeff Park in the HOUSE! Bets have been made due to my actions in George's. Anyone who knws Kerry most likely knows what I am talking about. But I'm not bitter, no not at all. Anyhow, on to the present. uncle pedro, posted 21 Mar 2003 by pedro » (Staff)

I'm the ringleader of this here place, and probably the nexus for most of the people here on the board.

I am originally from Poplar, Wi -- population 547 (in the 2000 census, up from 516, down from 569) which is in Douglas County, which is the Northwest corner of the state, just across the river from Duluth MN and on the southern shore of Lake Superior. Just for teh record, Lake SUperior really is superior to Lake Michigan... at least the southern part of the lake anyway.

I had a great time growing up in the woods and meeting all kinds of cool people like ake, Shredzilla, cheetah, Niiann, anna (my sister), and Dex. I went to a high school with 411 students, and while Shred and Dex may disagree, I think that for a school with resources that limited, the School District of Maple does pretty well for it's students. And I'm not just saying that because I had food on my table thanks to it. (My dad was a teacher and principal -- he retired last year.)

I went to North Park for college, and here I met most of you folks, and became acquainted with that special place, George's and those special people George and Helen Savakis, who I always say are "Our surrogate grandparents that we pay to be our grandparents." I think I realized how awesome George's was the first time Ben ordered a francheezy. I truly understood how awesome George's was when I ordered their Gyro's Deluxe.

I almost died and went to heaven when I first had the pizza burger.

Anyway. Now, I work for NPU as one of their resident geeks, doing support, programming, phone, networking, whatever kinds of stuff. This semester I'm a "visiting professor" teaching a networking class, which is pretty awesome. I've been trying hard to give the student's their money's worth. I met most of the rest of you (crackmonkey, zen, nutella, elise, sneakums, inkblot...et al) through the Interweb, and have been hanging out with all of them since around September of 1999, when I first installed Linux under the watchful gaze of crackmonkey.

Crackmonkey is also where I got the software that runs this site.

I am very much in love with a girl, one alh, and she recently moved to CHicago after graduating from college. We did the long distance thing for 3 and a half years. It sucks compared to being in the same place. And it's great to be in the same place, finally.

I also play in the AWESOME band redvinegar, which has really been fantastic in the last few months, thanks in no small part to oldpossumus and freakinfreak's joining the ranks. I realized only too late the other night that we should have gotten raskol up on stage -- then we would have had every memeber of redvinegar on stage at once. (That is, if you think of Shredzilla as a member of "pedro"...) Sorry raskol! That would have been a great moment. Anyway, the music has been really great lately, and that's exciting.

I think that's about it! I'm lucky to know y'all.

I worked on the second floor of old main from fall of 98 to aug of 01 but I honestly can't remember which one of you I remember seeing there at that desk. I have a terrible memory and probably because I just don't really pay attention very well to my surroundings. What was the name for that little desk area, the fort, or something like that? one day long [long] ago i convinced myself it was a good idea to work for a large corporation at the bottom of the barrel. i pretended it wasn't just because i had been looking for a job for two months and was out of money. a highlight of my two years at st*rbucks: telling some asshole customer what i really thought about how he was behaving, asking him to call my manager and let him know how i was behaving, and letting him know how very little i cared what he thought about it all.

i do figure modeling for art classes a few times a month.

my beautiful 1974 mercury comet was towed and trashed last summer while i sat at foster beach. it had many problems but i loved it. i now drive my late grandmother's 1984 pontiac parisienne with the best backseat in town. i call my living grandmother, "pretty bird" and i think she'll live forever.

because i believe that stand-up comedians really and truly want to make people laugh, when i see them perform i laugh more than i might usually. it can't fucking hurt.

Students at my school got yearbooks two days ago and of course haven't been able to put them away in class yet (grrr). But, their devotion to cheesy black & white photos got the better of me, so I pulled out my old yearbooks. The highschool ones only made me think, "Who the heck are these people?" But, the college ones were pretty neat to flip through (other than the over-abundance of Kr_st W_rling and Co.). I saw most of your smiling faces for the first time in a long time. And that was nice. :)

alh and I heard this on the way back last night coming through southern wisco, and I just had to laugh. I think when I was younger, I didn't really realize how much of a joke Meatloaf's music is -- I just assumed that he took himself as seriously as other humorous bands, like Poison. I was more hung up on the unintelligible mystery of "I would do anything for love, but I won't do that" -- I mean, what is "that"? Is it marriage? Is it some kind of weird unmentionable thing?

I'd be interested to hear your ideas.

In the last part of the song, this lady starts singing:

I know the territory, I've been around - It'll all fall to dust, it'll all fall down - Sooner or later you'll be screwin' around

And then he, dramatically, sings: I won't do that.

So I think that's what that is.

Hmmm... or is it that at first he would do anything for love but he won't settle down, and then it becomes he would do anything for love, but he won't screw around? Because from the beginning, he sounds like whatever that is (settling down) is pretty bad.

Jackie likes Meatloaf. I've had to come to terms with this...

yesterday, actually, she made me listen to him on the way up to my Grandma's. I was near vomiting. VH1's Top 50 Most Awesomely Bad Songs included IWDAFL(BIWDT) and all the critics were saying 'But what is "That" that he won't do?' and it was funny. Jackie was really pissed because she likes that song. and she tried to explain it to me pretty much as Warggle explains it above - that he won't screw around on her, etc. and that's what he won't do.

personally, i think that's the weakest idea for a song that I've ever heard. like, who would expect you to screw around on your girl FOR LOVE? I mean, that's like saying "I would do anything to save your life (but I won't kill you)." It doesn't make any sense.

Of course, I kept my mouth shut and avoided an argument about it, and just voiced my general dislike and then shut up and listened to it. but seriously, Meatloaf sucks. He's really cheesy. I can appreciate his voice, but I just can't get into the uberlame theatrics and melodramatic BS of his stuff. sorry. (though Paradise by the Dashboard Lights is halfway listenable...)
