The weather in MD today was cold in the morning and then the afternoon was a beautiful sunny 60 and breezy reminiscent of September in northern MN.

(even though i almost got stung by a bee today--it came right at me and sort of bounced off my hand--in the fall they are dying which makes them all psycho so they try harder than ever to sting you. see the "iscream" entree for my VERY fear-fraught relationship with bees).

it's not that their dying, posted 15 Sep 2003 by BigJ » (Fixture)

it's that they are trying harder than ever to try and store up last minute rations for the winter ahead. Bees actually hibernate and most of them make it through the winter, they huddle together in a big ball with the queen at the center and they all very rapidly vibrate their thoraxes to generate warmth and then sleep the winter away. It's an odd sleep because they need to use more energy than most hibernating animals because they are so small and must move to maintain body temperature, but yet they are in a state of sleep because they shut down most of their other body functions, kind of cool.

ugh, posted 16 Sep 2003 by Cinnamongirl » (Fixture)

And that made me think of my favorite Washington weather moment. When I was a junior in high school, I was living in Virginia right outside of DC. And one night in Jan or Feb it started sleeting like crazy. Now, any city with any idea how to repond to winter weather would have had crews out on the roads all night throwind slat and sand and whatnot, but Washington did not. They had run out of all their winter salt/sand, and so they just let it be. It the morning there was solid ice over all roads, sidewalks, lawns, etc. On average it was 3 inches thick, but got up to six inches in some spots. The city actually shut down for three days because no one could get anywhere. I remember slipping around the driveway with my mom, breaking the ice with shovels and scooping it off. The road we lived on wasn't cleared for a week. No school. We walked to the grocery store for basic need supplies and spent the rest of the time trying not to fall down when letting the dog in & out (on one of those stupid twist down leashes that got wrapped around all the bushes- big mistake) and just sitting under blankets and drinking cocoa... The storm wasn't bad, but the fact that the city couldn't handle it, well...

yesterday three separate rain squalls hit ann arbor.

the first one hit just after midnight with a spectacular amount of lightning, and it had tornados with it. i had to call my grandmother at midnight to make sure she knew that there was one headed toward her town, and then an hour later call kate to let her know that one had been spotted about a mile from her apartment. then it was just rain. i was at my parents' house ten miles from ann arbor.

yesterday morning was clear and warm. i left work early and drove by kate's apartment to make sure it was intact. just after i left her place, this cloud passed overhead at about 50 mph. the colors in that photo are accurate, and in the panoramic view, that photo would include the perfect blue sky just over the photographer's right shoulder. the squall line looked like a special effect in a movie. i was stopped along the side of a rural road with about a half dozen other vehicles while half-inch hail and hundreds of gallons of water pummelled the passenger side of my car in a 50 mph wind that gusted to 60. i couldn't see my windshield wipers. the city got half an inch of rain in ten minutes.

the third squall passed through at 10 pm. it left another inch of rain. there was a lot of lightning but the winds weren't as strong.

there's only one time i've ever been more afraid of the weather, and that was at age 10 when i was standing under a tornado in an open field.

Statement as of 5:59 PM CST on November 30, 2006

... Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from midnight tonight to 12 PM CST Friday...

Snowfall totals of 6 to 13 inches are expected across a large part of north central and northeast Illinois by noon Friday.

Snow is expected to develop around midnight tonight. A mixture of sleet and freezing rain is possible at the onset of the precipitation mainly east of I-57... including Watseka... Kankakee... the southeast suburbs of Chicago... and Northwest Indiana. Precipitation will become all snow by morning. Snow will be heaviest during the morning rush hour from about 300 am through 900 am. Snowfall rates of 2 inches per hour are likely at the height of the storm and lightning and thunder are possible.

The highest snowfall amounts of 10 to 13 inches are expected in a corridor from Ottawa to Elgin. 6 to 10 inches are expected from Polo to Rockford and also east of I-55 from Gibson City to Kankakee to Gary. Further east from Watseka to Valparaiso snowfall totals will be 4 to 7 inches.

Northeast winds will become north and increase to 20 to 30 mph by Friday morning. Winds will turn more northwesterly by Friday afternoon and gust as high as 40 mph. This will cause considerable blowing and drifting of snow with near blizzard conditions. This will create hazardous travel conditions... especially in open rural areas.

This is a dangerous storm. Avoid travel late tonight and especially during morning rush hour Friday.

Northeast winds will increase to 20 to 30 mph late tonight and continue into Tuesday... with gusts to 40 mph possible. The combination of the snow and strong winds will produce considerable blowing and drifting snow... with blizzard conditions developing in some areas. Travel conditions are expected to deteriorate late tonight.

A Winter Storm Warning means significant amounts of snow... sleet... and ice are expected or occurring. Strong winds are also possible. This will make travel very hazardous or impossible.

The next statement on this developing storm will be issued around 10 PM this evening.

i pretty much hate snow. so i'm really glad that there's none here.

i suppose hate is wrong. i've just had very few occasions where i've enjoyed it, and plenty where it's been my worst enemy. so i guess i'm jaded.

snow is great, posted 13 Feb 2007 by BigJ » (Fixture)

My dog loves it, my baby will love it when she's old enough, I like to walk in it if prepared, I like to ski in it on the rare occasions that I do, but I do NOT like to drive in it, which is most often what happens.

there was enough to turn a 30 minute drive to school into an 1:15 minute ordeal. I don't know what's wrong with people this year...they still haven't remembered how to drive in the snow.
