Simon and Garfunkel, posted 7 Jun 2002 at 00:38 UTC by baggins » (Fixture)

Saw the Concert in Central Park on channel 11 tonight. what a cool duo these guys were. Art Garfunkel is so underrated. i loved watching his performance. he was so real and un-rock star about the whole thing. he loved the fans more than Paul Simon, it seemed (not to rag on PS). just a cool performance, and fun to watch. their harmony and their lyrics really set them apart from a lot of other pop/folk musicians.

king's X, posted 10 Jun 2002 at 10:16 UTC by lukas » (Fixture)

Once again I missed a King's X show. This time I was all set to go until I realized I was scheduled to play at church that weekend plus it cost more than I had anticipated. But they are coming back to the region in July, so maybe I'll finally go see them. Also for those in Chicago, they are playing Double Door this Sunday and then coming back and playing out in Crystal Lake in July.

man are they old...., posted 10 Jun 2002 at 14:50 UTC by smax » (Fixture)

I wonder if King's X is the same band I say at Cornerstone in the mid 90's. They were still doing covers then. Any idea?

i wouldn't be surprised.

King's X, posted 24 Jun 2002 at 13:16 UTC by pedro » (Tourist)

I think their first album was '87 or '85 -- they have been known to do a few covers (like Manic Depression, which ROXX!) but they had at least 2 albums of material by the 90s, so I don't know. BUt if they were called King's X, and they played Cornerstone, then they probably were them.

cornerstone, posted 24 Jun 2002 at 14:29 UTC by lukas » (Fixture)

I did some googling for King's X and cornerstone but came up with nothing. And the king's X tour archive was not helpful either. I ended up spending an hour or so reading old interviews with the band. Not a bad way to waste some time.

Speaking of cornerstone, this year Jason Harrod, The Choir, Pedro the Lion, and a whole buch of other good bands will be there this summer.

SCHUBAS TAVERN
Damien Jurado
sat.19th.tomarrow!!!
10pm 10 bucks!

Songs: Ohia and Damien Jurado - Saturday, October 19 - 10:00 p.m. New City - Pick by Tony Barnett - Thursday, October 17 On this year's "I Break Chairs," the terminally melancholy Damien Jurado makes a left turn. Known for stark, introspective alterna-folk that falls between Nick Drake and Richard Buckner, Jurado jumps from being an endearing but spiritually damaged solo voice playing from the shadows to the frontman of a rock band, albeit a moody rock band. Produced by Pedro the Lion's David Bazen, "I Break Chairs" finds Jurado leading Gathered in Song, his version of Crazy Horse. The disc rings with a little jangle here, a little emo there, and Jurado's unmistakable raspy voice throughout. While fans of the lone-wolf Jurado might be a bit disappointed, fans of Will Johnson and Centro-matic should find "I Break Chairs" a keeper. However, tonight Jurado will not have the band in tow, instead performing in a duo. Therefore, those who have been with him since the early Seattle days might be pleased.

They must have nedeed to get on the road though because they played their last song and they immediately started packing up their gear. Rocking good time and I should have bought a CD or a cool shirt. Opening was Scientific and Seldom. Seldom was the drummer from Pedro the Lion and two other guys. man, two words to describe this show:

let down.

i guess the fact that i thought i was meeting people there and i ended up all alone added to the fact that i had no cash after paying cover and buying two beers added to the fact that i had just come from a long hard nite a work made for a not so good experience.

but still, BHP left much to be desired. they've definatley grown and matured as a band. but for me, its been in all the wrong ways.

perhaps seeing these guys play as a two peice to a crowd of 25-30 at the fireside back in '98 was burned a little too hard into my memory. the abbey was fucking packed!

oh well.

i was there man. with lauraL., peterC., Derek and Jose. first pillar back on the right, near the merch table. i also looked for AmyS., who i talked to at about 9:30 pm and she said she was gonna meet me there. i am sorry you were disappointed. i liked the show, and i was glad i went. they were pretty cool. i like hearing really original bands. i mean, i could hear a lot of influences (Pink Floyd, GYBE, Elliot Smith, Blue Meanies, and a couple others that have excaped my head for now), but they weren't like a rip-off of any of them in any way. i always try to take new bands i hear and figure out what other bands i know that they may have been influenced by. and i try to think of what songs they might cover well. i thought BHP would sound really cool doing a Misfits cover, or Black Sabbath's Black Sabbath. i also thought they would rock in a different way if they played twice as fast. not that they were too slow, or anything. their dirge-ness is a part of the draw. but i bet they'd be interesting and super intense playing double time.

Also, Joseph Arthur rocked as well. quite the musician.

the guitar player is really rad, he mainly uses a cello bow. he also sings into the guitar pickups too. he has one of the most amazing voices i've ever heard.

if you ever get a chance go and see them otherwise, pick up one of the cd's. if you want to hear some of their music check out the download page.

i saw a good show tonite. it was at the empty bottle.

soviet opened. they're kind of a synthy-dancey-80's revival yet very modern kind of group. very fashionable, catchy and at the same time lacking any pretension.

then add (n) to x played. never before have i seen a music group dig up so much of music's past for the sole purpose of rocketing it into the future. imagine iggy pop, david bowie, henry rollins, R2D2, max hedroom, an atari 2600 and your old yamaha turntable all starting a punk band together. imagine chaneling the musical spirits of MC5, the who, kraftwerk, the sex pistols, velvet underground, NEU!, suicide, afrika bambaataa, gary numan, black flag, radiohead, and spiritualized and feeding them through about 9 different synthesizers (all analog ones) a guitar, a bass (both with about a billion pedals) and a real- live drum set. (they use drum loops as well.)

too techno to be drum n' bass, too drum n' bass to be punk, and way too fucking punk to resemble something a producer could create on his own using something silly like a computer.

oh yeah, and after this show, the drum set is no longer my favoite instument to watch someone play live. the theremin now is. what other instrument can produce such a vast array of other-worldly sounds while 95% of the time the musician playing it isnt even touching it?

i cant even imagine what seeing this group would be like in a huge venue with a bevy of lights and video to accompany them. then again, i dont want to. check this group out. for real.

i tried to win front row GNR tix on the radio for like 3 hours today. it was busy the whole time. literally all 3 hours. even when you weren't supposed to call in... i know, i know: inkblot already hooked me up with some rad tix, and he is the man. but if i won front row, i am positive i could sell the other 2 off. anyway, im looking forward to the show monday night. full details to follow...

you guys and your crazy underground rock n' roll. I went to see Glassjaw at the Metro last night. Did you all know the Metro is celebrating 20 years of bringing Chicago badass music?! Allright, well now you do. So seriously now, Glassjaw was amazing. But American Nightmare was even better. Sadly I missed the Blood Brothers, becasue I've heard so much about them. But American Nightmare is a great hardcore band. The pit was hysterical to watch. It has been a long time since I've seen so many kids, pulling chains and karate dancing/fighting. (You all know what I'm talking about, don't you?) Well it was good. Alot of energy and the crowd didn't suck too much.

buncha choreographed inbred crap, if you ask me. i try real hard not to hit them when i see it. i mean, they get all decked out in their hardcore regalia with the bandanas around their faces and stuff, and you can feel them dripping and drooling with fierceness and animosity, but then they go and do those dumb-ass dances that just make you giggle. i pushed somebody who was windmilling towards me once, and somebody motioned to me that pushing was a no-no. i promptly flicked that guy off.

in other live show news, GNFNR decimated the Allstate Arena. a full report worthy of such legend will follow in the next few days. let's just saw the perfect end to such a show was stepping out of the arena into a night of November Rain.

So last friday night, Karna and I headed downtown to the MCI Center and heard The Other Ones w/ Robert Hunter. The Other Ones are the surviving memebers of the Grateful Dead w/ Jimmy Herring (guitar), Rob Barraco (keys), and Jeff Chimenti (keys). They put on a great show and the playing was stellar in most cases. I heard the occasional flub and Bobby forgot the lyrics to Throwing Stones. They didn't just play the crowd favorites and call it a night. They stepped out with some old dead and had a couple really nice jam sections. Robert Hunter, the Dead's longtime lyricist played at the set break. He's a great poet, but the dude can't sing to save his life. But besides that, it was a great show full of noodling goodness. Plus they started on time so it ended early enough to grab some beers and free pretzels at the Capitol City Brewing Company.

Jane Eaglen, apparently this cast they have this year is supposed to be like the best wagnerian singers ever, all together. But, as I'm not really a singer it's not too important to me. The Musical Preparation staff includes this lady named Elizabeth Buccheri, and I saw one of our librarians when I was there. It was so cool, I like that I've managed to only see wagner at the opera and nothing else...though Ireally want to go see Thais, Renee Fleming is singing the title role, but tickets are all but gone so whatever.

I know everybody has their favorite "holy grail" musician who nobody can criticize but I just have to comment on Hendrix. I don't listen to him all the time and I don't even have all of his albums but I feel there's no doubt that he single-handedly changed the face of music. It's so funny to hear respected guitar players talk about him. Townshend and Clapton both talk about their jaws hitting the floor the first time they saw Hendrix play. And how they thought they were going to become obsolete. Neil Young is hilarious with his praise. Anyway, from Little Wing to Voodoo Child, Hendrix is an innovator beyond most others. Hendrix was asked to comment on how he might respond to people criticizing his rendition of the national anthem as being unorthodox and inappropriate. With a genuinely confused look on his face he responded "I thought it was beautiful".

hendrix does rule, posted 10 Jan 2003 at 15:23 UTC by baggins » (Fixture)

i haven't gone too deep into the history and lore behind jimi, but the music is so different, so innovative, so remarkably unique, and the man could just play! i mean, we're talking virtuoso on a different level than somebody like malmsteen, who has no soul, no emotion, just fast fingers. hendrix could get inside a song and turn it inside-out on itself. its hard to describe. his version of the national anthem rules.

This is a fun little tidbit of info:

Juice, abaddon, <person>whatever handle evan has on here</person>, and I went to the Smokin Grooves tour this past summer. Outkast headlined, with Cee-lo Green, some dumb r&b singer whose name I forget, The Roots, Lauryn Hill, and J5. Mr. Juice had worked with his little kiddies all day long and was dead tired even before the show started.

Anyways, J5 are 3rd on the bill, and they were incredibly good...very smooth flow, good deliveries, and two of them can sing pretty well. The previously mentioned M.C. Chali-2na (ha ha) is from Chicago originally and was obviously having a good time being in his hometown. Half way through their set, Mr. Juice fell dead asleep. Stone cold asleep. After the set, all of us, except for Juice, who was still knocked out, left our seats to, among other things, get free camels from the promotions tent. When we came back, Juice told us of how Chali came down to the audience and started talking with folks. He comes up to Juice and says, "Hey...you that mutha-** that was sleepin through my set!" (we were third row, and quite visible to the group, I'm sure). Juice explained his situation with the kids and all, 2na (who was only kidding him to begin with) said that was cool, and autographed his ticket. Lucky bastard. But in any case, J5 is great, very good live, and are good with fans

godspeed you black emperor last night at the 930 club was stellar. I missed most of black dice and what I heard was so-so. But gybe was really cool. Nine people on stage--drums, cello, several guitars, violin, couple basses, percussion and toys and things. They create these walls of sound that ebb and flow like waves in the ocean (how's that for a cliche?) and when they get going at full tilt it's like being pounded by those waves. I felt like the guy in those old maxell posters. but then they drop off and flow into hauntingly beautiful duets between cello and violin. The film loops were really cool, especially the oil tower fire one which was superimposed over another out-of-focus loop and also the hope loop running over footage of an anti-war protest. I recognized some of the songs (they encored with bbf3) but that's not really important to the enjoyment of a gybe show. tomorrow they play at the scottish temple of freemasonry in baltimore and then you guys get THREE shows at the abbey.

well, the show did rawk! it was cool to see soo many people there. great vibe. or at least in our corner.

so, i was really wanting to tape the show but, didn't want to chance them taking my video camera so i just brought one of my holga cameras. anyways so this kid is in between the railing and the stage right up front with his video camera. damn, i wish i could tape it, i'm thinking. how did he get too, i wonder. he totally isn't with the band. he didn't look much older than 20 if that and well kinda dorky looking. anywas i yell over to him and ask how he got permision to tape. he act all anoyed and said, "i just asked" rudly. "what!?" i asked. "i just came down a few hours early and asked." he said and walked away. man, i was pissed. i could have done that. oh well. so, we rocked out the show was great. then tft ended and the kid ran off before i could ask him for his e-mail address or anything. damn. well, then we were walking out when i saw him down stairs. cool!

i'll go ask him. so, i walk up and say
"hey man! are you on the board or the bands page?"
he says rudly "i've looked at it once."
i think... ok? anyways, "do have e-mail get i get your address?"
then he cuts me off and says "i can't give you a copy if thats what you want!"
what? jerk! so i got pissed and said "well i was going to tape the show tomarrow night and see if you wanted to trade but i guess not." and walked away as he looked all intrested and said "minnesota?"
"yep!" and i walked away.

now, i didn't get to tape the show at the quest but, that was because they wouldn't let any cameras in. but, i was so pissed at this little kid how was be a f'n pick for no reason. gar! anyways there is a video of the show but, it doesn't look like we will ever see it.

Tom Julstrom soloing with the NPU Concert Band.
The featured piece, by Julius Fu?ik is called something along the lines of ?Der Alte Brunnbärr? which translates something along the lines of ?The Old Sorehead? it's a so-called Polka Comique. It should be good and I'd like to use my ?clout? my, critical mass, if you will, of friends to get a whole bunch of people there. It's going to be good, not that good, but good. I guess i don't really care if anyone shows up, i just thought i'd gloat a little (yeah, gloat), cause not too many people get to solo with the band and it's a fun piece to play, and to listen to. Just to refresh your memories, Fu?ik is the composer that wrote the world famous circus calliope song ?Abschied der Gladiatoren?, whatever that translates into it goes something like ?doo doo dododododo doo doo doo dooooo?. So if you want to come, it's free for students and cheap, if it costs anything for other people. we're also playing Mars from the Planets, America the Beautiful, Do Not Go Gentle (into that good night, yes, a little bit of dylan thomas), jamaican rumba, Some sailing song, and one or two other pieces. amazingly, this is the first concert I've ever played with the band that didn't feature a Vaughn Williams piece a Percy Grainger piece, or an Edward Elgar piece, should be interesting eh?

Cause as a person that was in it, I thought is was corny and melodramatic....

overland, posted 15 Apr 2003 at 12:02 UTC by ulyssess00 » (Fixture)

it was the first semester of my freshman year when OVERLAND went up. i still wasn't too sure if the theatre thing was for me yet, but i had just done a musical that spring in high school and loved it.

thankfully, i had mono the week of auditions for OVERLAND. i now know a good portion of the cast and respect them all, but i have to say... sitting in LHA, having that thing be my first peek at NP theatre, i was pretty scared. "corny and melodramatic" is putting it nicely...

BigJ, i know you were doing lights on that thing, but i'm sorry, the big gigantic spiral light thing was what did it in for me... it was ridiculous. people were dying on stage and i couldnt help but laugh beacuse it looked like a PSYCHADELIC FREAKOUT on stage.

I ended up taking my g/f. She was the one who wanted to go more than me, but she already had tickets for thursday (i was wednesday), and the crazy ticket rules made it impossible for us to combine for one day and pass of the other day. So she went to both days and we spent $50 more than we had to. On a better note, the show kicked my butt. We were roughly ten feet away from the band, and they played a great show. Actually worth the fifty bucks. THey played about 2 1/2 hours with a 20 minute break. about a 1/2 hour of that was acoustic. Mike Campbell is a wonderful guitarist.

Next up: Flaming Lips in 9 days.

Petty, posted 25 Apr 2003 at 06:59 UTC by chester » (Fixture)

Benmont Tench is great on the keyboard as well. I've had problems in the past accepting up-and-coming bands the first time I saw them. Though I'm now a big fan, I disliked the Indigo Girls when I saw them open for Neil Young in '88, I disliked Lenny Kravitz when he opened for Petty in '89, and I disliked Smashing Pumpkins when they played between Pearl Jam and RHCP in '91. Dumb.

On Overland, posted 25 Apr 2003 at 09:15 UTC by BigJ » (Fixture)

Yes the show was cheesy and overly melodramatic, but I have to say that I had nothing to do with the decision to project a spinning water gobo while they were drowning, I would have just made the stage blue and done some sound effects, less is more.

was so great precisely because it was so awful. I think I remember my sister, or maybe the friend I persuaded to go with me, "You owe me for taking two hours of my life with this f-ing show."

She had SOME interesting things to say, but mostly it was ranting about bio-ecological things, and how we eat our animal brothers and sisters, and this dream she had in Colorado while travelling across the country with these animals imploring us not to eat them. There was also a slide show of pictures going on behind her. I appreciated what she had to say, but she said it in such a cliche and self-righteous way. Phil, are you trying to make me jealous? That is an awesome set-list. I'm pissed at myself for not getting my butt into gear and getting tickets for that show.

This is mostly for Raskol & Phil, or anyone else who cares, but a few Rolling Stones ago, they had their first interview in ten years with Eddie Vedder. It was a cool interview. He discussed their opening show in the US, which was in Denver and my dad was at, where Eddie put a Dubya Bush mask on the microphone and then slammed it into the stage. My dad sent me the Rocky Mountain News article about the show. A few people got mad & left. E.V. basically said that that's not exactly what happened, it was misinterpreted, but hey, rock is about expressing yourself, right?

recently i obtained fancy shiny cd's of a strength in numbers show from 1990. I used to have a scratchy old tape of the same show but this is way better. The band is sam bush on mandolins, jerry douglas on dobro, bela on the banjo/guitar, mark o'connor on fiddle/mando/guitar, and edgar meyer on bass. It is a fabulous group of musicians and the show they put on is crantastic. I'm going to rip a couple of the fantastic tracks and stick 'em up somewhere. If anyohne wants the full show (2 cd's worth) give me a holler and I'll burn a copy. Seriously good stuff.

Tom Petty -- the Lost Cities Tour, posted 10 Jul 2003 at 09:53 UTC by pedro » (Tourist)

So, last night anna and her parents and I went and saw Tom Petty play at the DECC Arena in Duluth on his "Lost Cities Tour" (a bunch of smallish cities that hardly ever get big shows, which is an awesome idea in itself). The place was packed out -- maybe not completely sold out, but at least 90-95% full -- and every single person there was incredibly stoked to have Tom Petty standing there in front of them. The whole crowd was so into it, and so happy to be seeing him play there, it was really incredible. I've never been to a show quite like that.

Anyway, the heartbreakers are a great live band. It's not the antics or anything (although the light show was very cool) -- they're just great musicians who really know how to rock. It was especially cool to see Benmont Tench on piano.

Tom was awesome himself, he sounded great, and engaged the crowd often. Every time they stopped playing or he talked people were cheering so loud he had to stop and let people calm down. He said, "This is the first time we've ever played here!" and the roof just about came off. Later he said, "We should have come here a long time ago." Which of course, is total rock and roll shtick, but seriously, when teh guy is on a tour called "The Lost Cities Tour," he's playing in Duluth, and everyone from 13 year old boys to 60 year old women are cheering their heads off, you gotta believe it.

There were also these five highschool boys standing right in front of us who, if they were drunk frat boys you would have wanted to have thrown out, but these were 5 of the dorkiest high schoolers you've ever seen, and they were on top of the world that night. So into it, singing along, playing air guitar, jumping up and down... it made the show so much better even as it obstructed my view half the time. Anna and I were laughing hysterically at/with them. It was so fun to see people so completely into what was happening... it was one of the most beautiful things I've seen in a long time. Five dorky guys and one cute girl... who I'm sure they all have secret crushes on.

Anyway, here's the tentative tour I found on TP's website:

06/26/03 - Sioux Falls, SD - Sioux Falls Arena
06/28/03 - Milwaukee, WI - Marcus Amphitheatre/Summerfest
06/30/03 - Cedar Rapids, IA - US Cellular Center
07/01/03 - Council Bluffs, IA - Mid America Center

07/09/03 - Duluth, MN - Decc Arena
07/11/03 - Mankato, MN - Mid West Arena
07/13/03 - Peoria, IL - Civic Center
08/09/03 - Holmdel, NJ - PNC Bank Arts Center
08/12/03 - Portsmouth, VA - Harbor Center
08/13/03 - Atlanta, GA - Arena at Gwinett Center
6/15/03 - Charleston, SC - N. Charleston Coliseum
8/16/03 - Nashville, TN - Amsouth Amphitheatre
8/18/03 - Memphis, TN - Orpheum
8/19/03 - Memphis, TN - Orpheum

8/24/03 - Birmingham, AL - Oak Mountain Amphitheatre
8/26/03 - New Orleans, LA - UNO Arena
8/30/03 - Aspen, CO - JAS Festival

Mankato?! Souix Falls!

Tom Petty rocks. I think I'm going to write him a letter to explain to him how great it was that they played here. Anyway, I just had to report on that.

I love Tom Petty--I mean, I am really familiar with him and grew up with his music. I don't often think to pop him in the CD player, but I like him a lot. I went to see him two Julys ago and it was AWESOME. They put on a kick-a$$ live show and are a very tight band live. A lot of bands lose that je ne sais quoi when they hit the stage, but the Heartbreakers were born to rock live. And you can tell they're enjoying it, which is important. Like pedro said, the crowd is really varied, too, since they've been around a while. It's great to be rocking out with people your parents' age and older.

I wish I had seen them this time around.

i realize a lot of you here are hard-core about wilco, and i love them, too, but i love REM even more. they're one of my top 3 bands and have been since jr. high. i've only seen them live once, and that was when michael stipe was in his eyeliner/sequin faze, so hopefully he has calmed down. in any case, i know it will be a great show. Drastic Measures, posted 12 Sep 2003 at 13:03 UTC by chester » (Fixture)

Although it's an imperfect solution, whenever I've needed to get to a sold out show, I've had luck with the numerous "legitimate ticket brokers" (ie scalpers with some sort of legal loophole) in the Chicagoland area. I mean, if you absolutely must get to a sold out show it's nice to have the option. However costly it may be. Somehow I'd be less inclined to go to eBay for such items.

I haven't purchased from either (I have bought scalped tickets on the street) but I've noticed that a lot of tickets on ebay are being sold by ticket brokers. I'd be wary about buying tickets for a big-name act off ebay though; i would be worried about counterfeit tickets, which was a big problem for phish a while back.

gillian welch and david rawlings at the vic theatre, posted 18 Sep 2003 at 16:28 UTC by pedro » (Tourist)

This was an awesome show (surprise). I had never seen Welch/Rawlings play before, so it was a particular treat. I had also never sat upstairs at the Vic, actually I didn't even really remember that there was an upstairs at the Vic. Anyway, we had a good view, and it was nice to not be standing the whole time, although I would have liked to have a closer inspection of the guitars and fingerwork.

They played for at least 2 and 1/2 hours -- the show started at 8:00 (no opening band) and we were out by 11:30, including a decent intermission, on 4 instruments -- two acoustic guitars, one banjo, and harmonica, with 4 mics -- two vocal and two for the guitars. Nothing fancy (unless you count "the box" that had their pics and set list). Anyway, I should have brought a pen and paper for writing down their set list, but basically it covered all their records.

Their on-stage banter was great, as was their general demeanor. You knew they'd said most of that stuff before, but it didn't seem forced -- the whole "here's my standard joke about X" feel was absent, even when you knew it was a bit they'd done before. And, they were really cute onstage together. I don't say that in a lame way, but just in the sense that they are very real, very normal people.

One of my favorite moments was when Gillian played harmonica. Actually, my favorite moment is when she took off the harmonica frame -- she folded it in half, but it wouldn't go all the way. Anyway, she handed it to Dave (without missing a beat), who took it from her, and folded it back the other way all the way and put it away. Harmonica frames (or whatever you call them) only close one way. I enjoyed seeing her fold it the wrong way -- and seeing Dave fix it and put it away. It's the mundane things that really bind us all together.

David Rawlings rocks. (I just wrote that for the David Rawlings rules/sucks meter.) Seriously though, he's an amazing guitarist. It was interesting to watch them play together, because Gillian does almost no lead work, even when she's playing the banjo -- almost all the "fancy stuff" you hear on their records is Dave. Which is really to say that one of the most powerful things about their partnership is that there isn't a lot of musical overlap -- they're never doing the same thing at the same time.

The only main thing that hit me (I could actually write about the show all day long) is that I thought, in concert, "Oh, they're playing this almost exactly like the recorded version." Not that that was bad -- I wasn't sure what to expect. But most of the songs were very close to their recorded versions (except My First Lover, which had some really cool rhythm changes)... anyway, that's what I thought, until I went home and listened to her records, and realized how much they had embellished at the show. It was pretty cool. For example, lots of people have heard their version of "I Want To Sing That Rock And Roll," which they recorded live during the Down The Mountain concerts that followed the O Brother soundtrack success. Dave's blistering solo makes the crowd roar on the recording. At the show, I was waiting for him to pull something out even farther beyond the Down The Mountain version -- but he didn't... at least, that's what I thought (again) until I listened to the song last night, and thought his recorded version was positively dull compared to the Vic.

Anyway... she closed the first Encore with I'll Fly Away (with Dave playing the part of Alison Krauss), explaining that she always saw Bill Monroe end his shows with that song. So I thought the show was over and booked downstairs to get a shirt before the crowd hit. I got my shirt, and was about to leave, when the guy behind the counter gestured with his head and said, "SHe's gonna play a couple more songs." I nodded and said "thanks!" and went back inside.

It was a great show, and I cannot recommend these artists enough. I want to make music like they do!

i didn't get too talk too much about the wilco show last night because i was tired, but it was very amazing and beautiful. they are incredible live musicians. i went with three people who were not too familiar with them, and i think they're all converts. i unfortunately have only yankee hotel foxtrot and mermaid avenue I & II, which i am working on fixing, but i loved all of the songs i knew which they played as well as those i didn't. "i am trying to break your heart" was incredible. it's great when you go to a show of a band you really like but that's not one of your list of top ten bands or whatever, and the show makes them move onto that list. i saw them a few years ago downtown in front of the trib building, just going along with my friend leif, but i didn't know them too well then. i enjoyed this show even more. i felt transported for the evening.

this is not relevant musically-speaking, but i have to comment on the venue. it was held at the chicago auditorium theatre, which is this extremely gorgeous and ancient place, and i have never been so terrified. we were on the sixth floor--the highest level--and climbed the stairs all six floors (harsh, as i had just run four miles. my legs hurt today). that was okay, but when we got to the balcony and our seats, i almost thought i would have to leave. it is sort of on a slope, and we were at the lowest set of seats in front of the balcony railing, and this railing was wide open. i mean, if you'd had a few too many or simply slipped, you could fly right through the railing and plummet to your death. i'm not exaggerating. i was truly fearing for my life. my only real phobia is heights (i am very afraid of bees and a few other things, but not phobic. i have nightmares often about heights and falling to my death), and i had a hands-on experience dealing with that last night. it wasn't just me, the people i was with were freaked out too. to quote my friend jenny: "if you feel like committing suicide, tonight's the time to do it." also jenny: "it's so different, how safe everything is today. the moral back then was, 'don't be an idiot, we're not taking care of you.'" This was extremely funny at the time; you had to be there. Fortunately by the time wilco came on i had come to terms with things, but it really was hard for me. a few times during the opening band i felt near-anxiety attacks coming on.

now that everyone is convinced i'm crazy, in closing i will say the show was great, we managed to get rock-star parking at a free meter--quite a feat downtown on a friday night--and i love wilco more than ever. but honestly, unless it's a band i am absolutely wild about, i would not see a show on the sixth floor of the auditorium theatre ever again.

ralph stanley and the clinch mountain boys also "uncle earl", posted 6 Oct 2003 at 00:00 UTC by pedro » (Tourist)

Well, I realized a dream today with alaric at the Old Town School of Folk. We saw Dr. Ralph Stanley and the clinch mountain boys, Ralph being basically the elder statesman of bluegrass music.

They were absolutely great, and everything that you'd expect from a first-rate bluegrass group -- with a leader who's been playing music professionally for 57 years -- and fun, too. A wide range of ages, from about 20 to 73. Their fiddle player was the youngest, and their banjo player also fairly young. Their lead guitar player was mid-forties it looked, and a great player. The rhythm guitar and lead vocalist is Ralph Stanley II (Ralph's son). Ralph II has a great voice, although he sounded a little unsure of himself or something. (As a vocal major, I listen for these kind of things.) Their bass player and other vocalist (mostly high harmonies) was Jack Cooke, who has been in the band for something like 33 years. Ralph said that in 33 years "he's only missed 26 concerts, and was drunk for 35 concerts." Jack said, "Not too bad!" Jack was a total character, and was definitely the comic relief.

Anyway, all the players were amazing, and their performances were right on. Ralph has gotten a little stiff in his older years, and so he only played banjo on one tune. He was great (of course). After he finished, he said, "You should have heard me 35 years ago."

That was the one thing I didn't expect -- Dr. Ralph was really funny. I mean, he's had 57 years to work up his material -- but seriously, he was just really witty and funny. Very, very dry sense of humor.

Probably the only downer was that he had a cold and so his voice definitely suffered a little bit. As a seasoned performer, he covered quite well -- lowered keys on some songs and (i think) had others sing more than usual -- but you could tell that he wasn't quite at 100%. That said, he looked and sounded great. I thought. It seems like a lot of the pictures I've seen of him rely on his weathered face and white hair to convey his maturity and massive presence, but in turn make him look much older and more frail than he looks in person. I thought he looked great. (Jack agreed.)

They also had tons of records I had never seen, and although the prices were steep(ish), I bought to records, one I knew was very good but didn't own, While the Ages Roll On (a recent gospel collection), and a 2-disc live record that Ralph put out himself of Stanley Brothers performances from UIC in 1961 and 1965. The band members themselves work the merch tables, so I had a chance to talk to Jack Cooke and Ralph signed my CDs.

The opening act was "Uncle Earl," a all-female bluegrass band that I thought was really good. They consisted of a fiddle, banjo, rhythm guitar, and bass. I thought the bass and fiddle players were especially awesome. The bass player was especially fun to watch. She actually looked a little like K4rna 3klund but only rocking out on old-timey bass.

Anyway, within this calendar year, I've seen Daniel Lanois, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, and Ralph Stanley. Now all I need to do is see Tom Waits play before next June, and I can stop going to concerts for the rest of my life. (ha)

If you are interested in bluegrass at all, and you ever have a chance to see Dr. Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys, don't miss it.

i wish i had talked to him. he seemed really taken with one particular female last night, and i don't really like to interrupt that sort of thing. but man he really brings a lot to the table with this band.

another excellent fire theft show. it was so fun meeting and hanging out with a bunch of people from their messageboard. i think/hope i got some decent pics tonight. there were probably 3x as many people there tonight as last night -- it was packed! and the band was so cool to talk to. supernice guys with great hearts and they listen and tell stories. i really hope 'hands on you' makes it onto whatever they record next, whenever that may be.

there are so many moments from this album, especially when performed live, that are pure Zeppelin. 'Hands On You' being one song that really has that sound. obviously the Les Paul has a lot to it. also, i think Nate's bass playing has an integral part in that similarity. 'Rubber Bands' -- quickly becoming my favorite song from the album -- has a lot of Zep in it too.

i gave Jeremy Enigk a big hug, too.

well, i was really looking forward to this show to see patty, cause i think she is one of the best going on right now. but, i was a little concerned that with the four of them they wouldn't play for very long. you've got four headliners what order do they play and for how long? well, i was very wrong it was just the four of them in a half circle with their guitars and singing and playing on each others songs. it was soooooooooo amazing! i'm not a huge fan of the other women but, respect what they do but, they all have some of the best vocies in music so, to hear them all singing together on each others songs was so beautiful. it was like the CSNY but, women. they don't practice, they just sit around during the show desiding what to play. it was soo cool and very funny. mary chapin carpenter ask in the middle of the show if anyone knew the score of the red sox score and someone from the balony yelled 3-1 red sox. there were alot of people yelling for that. then the girls started talking about if there was a cubs red sox word series that that would mean there would be world peace by the fact that they would tie and say they don't want to have a winner and the rest of the world would learn from that. oh did i menchen that it wa at the chicago theater and we were in the front row!!! ohhhgh it was great. then when they came back for their encore they did the greatest cover of "i want it that way!" it was funny, beautiful, and for more artistic than the orginal. then they closed with patty's song "mary" which is one of my favorites and was perfect for the four of them to all harmonize together. it was sooo amazing.

last night i took my friend out for her b-day dinner--she was turning 65. i would have rather been at the beat kitchen for rv, but didn't have much choice. she wanted to go see the female impersonator show at the kit kat club on halsted. it was really spectacular. the drag queens are really beautiful, and talented.

the food was only so-so. i ordered tuna and it was completely raw. i didn't realize it would be served like this. i don't eat at chi-chi restaurants much. i had to send it back and have it cooked well. i felt picky, but no way could i eat that crap. i don't even like sushi. we did order guacomole at their suggestion--the night's special--and they didn't have it (?), so they gave us another appetizer on the house, which was cool.

the best part was the show. we got to talk a little to one of the performers, this very glamourous and very sweet black man (woman?), who had three different wigs and performed songs by tina turner, janet jackson, and toni braxton. and looked amazingly like each one. i got some nice pictures with her. i will post them when i get them back. it's not fair that a man looks better as a woman than i do.

im late reading things. Wilco was awesome. I'd only been to the auditorium once before, like 10 years ago, to see Les Miz. Going back again to see the concert, it's THE ideal mid size venue. Tons better sound and a comfier atmosphere than the vic/aragon/et.al.

Not to dis, because Id get roasted here, but I was very happy to hear hardly any yankee hotel foxtrot for pretty much the entire first hour. Id get equally roasted by saying that it was good that they only played a couple from Mermaid vol.1 (though I was hoping for California Stars all night, and it happened near the end of the show) The first half was mainly summerteeth, being there, some AM. The latter half was an unexpected mix of tupelo, yhf, and assorted songs. It was a really energetic night, probably better than when they played that free show at the taste a few years back, even without Jay Bennett.

Saw primus last night. It was ok. I was not impressed. I like Primus, or at least what I have heard of their music, but when did they become a jam band?

The drum solo was probably the best/most interesting I've ever heard, with the exception of Bill Martin of MMW, but it was about 3 times longer than needed. On the other hand that does say something about Tim Alexander's stamana, or at least the drugs he was on, if that was the case. It was funny to hear Les repremand the audience for throwing things. Very bitchy of him.

anywayi'mjustramblingnow.

was always a jam band at heart, i thought, whether it looked like they were or not. Then again, that's just from the sound of their albums, Ive never been to a show. An easier angle would be that les' frog brigade was much more down that path and gathering a huge following, which lead to them being grouped in with such crap-ass stuff as leftover salmon and that other god awful string cheese incident band (as well as better or at least average groups like widespread panic, aquarium resque unit, phish, blah blah) Then Les joined in with Trey for awhile and boom. I saw an oysterhead show...and it was okay, but Id much rather have seen any of the three members' regular bands than the power trio themselves.

i took J@ckie to see a lutenist/soprano duet performance at Northwestern's Lutkin Hall. it's a tiny little building that had great acoustics, and reminded me of being in a very un-decorated old church. they played about ~15 pieces, most of which were sung in Italian (the other 3 or 4 were solo lute pieces). The vocalist was really damn good. her voice was very dynamic, and superbly controlled. i was impressed. the lute is also a very cool instrument. it's like a big classical guitar, with a lot more strings (some of which don't get fretted). one cool thing was that the program had the lyrics for all the pieces in it, in both Italian and English. some of the pieces are so beautifully written, as far as the poetic aspect of the song.

i will go to more events like this. i swear it.

Musical Luminaries Bring ``Sweet Harmony''; Special August Tour Kicks off in Atlanta, Georgia

NASHVILLE, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 29, 2004--Musical heavyweights Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin, Buddy Miller, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings will join one another for a unique tour beginning in August in Atlanta, Georgia. Dubbing the tour "Sweet Harmony Traveling Revue," the set will be varied, featuring ensemble performances, solo numbers and, at times, instrument swapping. "Sweet Harmony Traveling Revue" will visit 14 cities on its three-week run, including New York's Central Park on August 18, and will wrap up August 29 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

About the tour, Gillian Welch comments, "I always wanted to run away with the traveling circus. I guess I finally get my chance. Too bad there are no elephants." Patty Griffin adds, "I feel really lucky to be a part of this. Emmylou is so awesome, and all the other members of this tour are truly amazing. Plus we're all friends."

These five artists have known each other for some time, over the years having collaborated on albums, shared the stage and covered each other's songs, however this tour marks the first time they will work together as a unit.

Gillian and Emmylou both won a Grammy for the soundtrack album O Brother, Where Art Thou? on which they sang "Didn't Leave Nobody But the Baby" with Alison Krauss. Emmylou Harris covered Patty Griffin's "One Big Love" on Red Dirt Girl and Gillian Welch's "Orphan Girl" on Wrecking Ball. Gillian Welch provided background vocals on Emmylou's last offering, Stumble Into Grace and Buddy Miller has performed on Harris' past three albums, as well as having been an integral part of her touring band, Spyboy, for years. Emmylou sang on two of Patty's albums (Flaming Red and 1000 Kisses). David Rawlings and Gillian Welch are a working team - writing, recording and touring together.

Eleven-time Grammy award winner Emmylou Harris is one of the most influential and admired artists in contemporary music, with a scope that is genre-transcending. She was discovered by Gram Parsons in the 1970's, and served as his backing vocalist. After his death, she began her solo recording and performing career. Since then, Emmylou has released twenty-three studio albums, the latest of which being 2003's Stumble Into Grace.

Patty Griffin has quickly become one of the most critically-acclaimed artists of her generation. Her fourth studio album, Impossible Dream, releases April 20 and highlights why so many of her peers have become such passionate devotees. Her songs have been covered by many artists, including the Dixie Chicks, Bette Midler and Mary Chapin Carpenter.

Blending soulful Americana with blues-tinted country and dusty rock and roll, Buddy Miller makes records that defy easy categories. His most recent, Midnight and Lonesome, features his trademark superbly rendered songs, cohesive in spirit and yet wide-ranging in style. As a guitarist, he has played with Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams and Midnight Oil, among others, while his songs have been covered by such artists as the Dixie Chicks and Lee Ann Womack.

The music of Gillian Welch & David Rawlings has a timeless essence that has garnered much critical acclaim. Their songs are soulful and heartfelt with incisive, emotional lyrics. In addition to her Grammy for the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack, Gillian received Grammy nominations for her albums Revival and Time (The Revelator). Her latest album, Soul Journey, was produced by David Rawlings and is available on Acony Records.

So we missed it. Very, very sad. The good thing is they tour pretty frequently, so I'm sure I'll catch them next time around. And hopefully by then Hernando and I will be in the same city so we won't need to deal with the Train/transportation Gods of Fate.

It sounds awesome, Chester. I'm glad to hear a rockin' review from a first-hand witness!

I think the CD+admission+1 round of drinks for a set price is a good idea. however, I know I have people that would possibly go, but don't drink. and have never heard you guys before. I can't say they *wouldn't* be willing to pay $13 or $15 for that package, but it might be something they think is too steep. I asked people today to come and several were interested. anyway, just a thought.

I'm going to start emailing people to come that night! and it's on a good night that I'm not too busy (hopefully).

I would think they could also get soda, right? I mean, soda costs basically nothing... but i defer to phil. we've talked about the price a lot, and we basically need to charge that price to cover our costs and pay back the money we've borrowed from loan sharks (aka our parents and selves). It is more than usual... but it will be totally worth it!

I am in possession of oggs of the ali farka toure show that ryan and I went to last summer. Recorded on the cheap with homemade mics (from a pair of headphones) onto a portable mini disc, it sounds remarkably good. Plus I think he also put the Kanaga De Mopti stuff on this CD as well. I can't wait to listen to it with headphones and relieve that evening.

I just got back from Ravinia, where Jackie and I saw The Beach Boys with some people from work. it was a hilarious and fun evening. the place was F'in packed! we barely found a spot that could hold all of us. The set was pretty good. all the greatest hits tunes you'd expect. plus they did a whole bunch of older stuff from that era, and before TBB were even a band. it was kind of a weird surreal set, though. A) there was no Brian Wilson, who is noticeably absent. B) like I mentioned, they did songs that weren't Beach Boys songs. C) a lot of the songs they did they played a bit slower than they were recorded, and some they just messed with the tempos a bit, which was kinda weird.

but all in all it was a good evening. there were a couple older ladies with us, and they had a few glasses of wine, and boy were they funny. we also listened to George Michael's Greatest Hits on the ride home, which was surreal in itself.

good times.

mahler's 2nd symphony was so good. outdoor ampitheatres are just lovely. and it's great to sit outside as the sun sets over the hils, watching the musicians slowly make their way onstage.

the three people who were sitting in front of us were probably the most obnoxious people in l.a. they left and returned twice, they were eating the whole time, the girl was on her cell phone once or twice, they were laying down, fiddling, whispering, talking, kicking their plastic cups. they finally just left altogether, which made me happy.

i was, nevertheless, able to enjoy everything thoroughly. i thought the chorus/singers would be strange in the context of the rest of the music, but when the mezzo soprano [i think, would she be higher or lower than the soprano?] sang her first note, it brought tears to my eyes. it was the most beautiful, heartwrenching thing i've heard in a long time.

now i know why i was uneasy about going tonight.

so, Jackie's friend Erica had found out about this show and said we should go and she'd get tickets, etc. we were like, 'ok'.

well, about 5 minutes before erica and her bf pick us up, jackie says that the website for Tweeter Center said the show was 'A laserlight Spectacular featuring the music of Pink Floyd.'

I'm like "wtf? Pink Floyd laserlight? come on. they don't actually have the bands perform for those shows. they just make some cheesy laser show for all the stupid neo-hippies to watch while they smoke pot and frink really overpriced beer. no wonder it's only $15!!"

and we decided to go anyway. it was actually alright. it was just nice to lay in the grass outside with Jackie and listen to some good music. they did 2 sets (oddly enough, there was an intermission). the first set was a bunch of stuff from The Dark Side of the Moon. and they had clips here and there from The Wizard of Oz during that part. the second set had the bigger songs from The Wall and Wish You Were Here, but I didn't watch the lasers as much.

pretty decent night, in all.

Tom Waits plays three Berlin shows; first dates announced in November European tour

Tom Waits plays three shows at Berlin's Theater Des Westens on Monday 15th, Tuesday 16th and Wednesday 17th November 2004 -- the first concerts to be announced on the singer's eight-date European tour that follows the release of his new album, Real Gone, this autumn.

Tickets for the German concerts go on sale this coming Saturday, 7th August, and are available from all CTS (Computer Ticket System) box office outlets nationwide or use the links listed below.

The tour -- Waits' first in Europe since 2000 -- will also include shows in the UK and the Benelux countries. The full details of these concerts, to be played in small and intimate venues, will be announced in the near future. Waits has not played in the UK since 1987.

His new touring band features Marc Ribot (guitar), Larry Taylor (bass) and Brain Mantia (drums), the same musicians who also appear on the Real Gone album which is released through Europe in the week beginning Monday 4th October.

Real Gone has been written and produced by Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan, his longtime collaborator. The 15-track CD unveils Waits' new musical hybrid, crafted from primal blues, Jamaican rock-steady grooves, African and Latin rhythms and melodies and what Waits calls ``cubist funk''. The album is released on Anti Records.

went and saw the North Mississippi Allstars with the Dirty Dozen Brass band at the 930 club on friday night with Er1k. The DDBB was awesome and they got to play for about 1.5hrs. NMAS played for quite a while and put on a rockin good show. But it really did make me want to go see gov't mule who are i think are still the reigning kings of ear splitting loud slide guitar rock'n'roll, even without Allen Woody. The highlights of the night were the crossover performances between DDBB and NMAS. There was also this RIsing Star Drum and Fife band which was two guys with snares and a guy with a bass drum playing cadence and dancing around. They were on and off the stage during the NMAS set and at one point between encores came out and one of the guys grabbed the vocal mic and started rapping. we weer in teh balcony and i watched as the front-of-house guy fumed and than actually ran all the way to the stage and ripped the mix out his hand and put it back on the stand when they were done. He was having a rough night. And then during the final encore the snare drum guy puts his drum down and walks off stage and proceeds to go get in a shouting match with the FOH sound guy during the encore. We had a great spot in the baclony to watch the craziness. For the final encore that had almost all the DDBB onstage along the NMAS and jammed out one of their songs and transitioned into lovelight and played an awesome version.

we caught the train home and went to the tasty diner for breakfast and i stupidly had chili cheese fries but they were good going down.

i really love ollabelle. i heard them play on npr and thought they were great.

next week i'm going to see wilco play at the wiltern. i'm really pumped about it. i've seen jeff tweedy play solo, but a full band show is something that has eluded me over and over and over. it's also possible that i will meet them at a booksigning in silverlake. cool.

christmas eve shows, posted 13 Dec 2004 at 00:01 UTC by baggins » (Fixture)

so, i got a call on friday night from a guy from church. his band, Water2Wine (not my favorite name...) is one of the bands at my church. it's made up of a lot of really excellent musicians, including a few of the top music staff from church.

anyway, our church is putting on a bunch of Christmas Eve services this year. a couple for each campus of the church. W2W is going to be the band performing at the South Campus services this year. there are services on the 23rd and the 24th. W2W's bassist isn't going to be able to do the services with them, so their guitarist (the guy who called me) is going to jump on bass (since he plays just about everything) and he asked me to fill in on guitar. I am going to do it, and I am excited about the opportunity to play with such a top-notch band.

anyway, I am inviting all of you to come out. I know it's christmastime and all, and everybody's busy. but if any of you are interested in coming out on either the 23rd or the 24th, I would love to have you guys come down and check it out.

anyone interested should email me for directions/times etc. waggins@REMOVETHISPARTtastytronic.net

the Christmas Eve/Christmas Eve Eve services are on (obviously) thursday and friday, the 23rd and 24th. the services start at 6:30 with about a half-hour of prelude music, which is mostly what I will be playing on. then at 7 the actual service starts and goes until about 8pm, I imagine.

If anybody wants to come down, I would love it.

The Worst Gig I Ever Had, posted 20 Dec 2004 at 15:20 UTC by alaric » (Fixture)

I ran across these links at Fraters Libertas. It's a series of articles written by Robbie Fulks, entitled "The Worst Gig I Ever Had". It's a story of playing backup to a Garth Brooks impersonator in a Minneapolis hotel conference room. An excerpt:

"Garth" arrived at 2:30. In his Banana Republic khakis and a Bing-Crosby-at-Christmas sweater he looked less like Garth Brooks than a part-time furniture retailer from Florida named Pat, which he was. Steve introduced him to me first, fostering a misperception that would dog my relations with Pat for the next 20 hours: that I was not one of five hired hands, but bandleader.

"Good to meet you," said Pat rigidly, shaking my hand and eyeing my T-shirt and jeans. "You know about the dress requirements, right?"

Hilarity ensues...

unfortunately, that means i didn't get to see the show. but i will be at the one in plainfield.

mojo's? i ran into mike at GC the other day, and he said john's brother, or somebody, started a bar or something down there. is that the one? where is it? i'm sure it's close to me, but i need to find out where it is so i can get there. i don't know downtown plainfield at all.

First off, phil, I really didn't mean to remind you I just wanted to thank you for your sacrifice. I've downloaded a couple live shows and got you a sticker that should arrive in your mailbox someday soon. Anyway on to a review of the show...

Karna and I were supposed to go but she was feeling really bad as she was/is catching the flu/cold I had for the last 1.5 weeks. So I rolled solo down to the 9:30 club and walked in during Autolux's set. I only heard a couple songs but they were really good. Insane guitar fireworks. I ran into a guitar friend from church so I had someone to stand with and complain about the second band - the Moving Units. They were pedestrian dance punk franz ferdinand wannabes. Finally the Secret Machines started and they opened with my favorite song of the CD - Sad & Lonely. The sound was HUGE. I have rarely heard drums sound so amazing as last night. The bass/keys/lead singer spent most of the night on his Rhodes and did bass duty with his left hand which sounded incredible. They played a bunch of songs from the new album and some others I didn't recognize. For a trio they put out an amazing wall of sound. The lynchpin in all this was the dummer. He laid down these enormous, solid beats all night long. His kick drum was probably a 28" and there was a point when they did just a verse with drums only and it sounded better than most full bands. The encore was First Wave Down and Nowhere Again and after I stood there shellshocked by the extreme face-rocking I had just received. Their record is great but live and LOUD is how it's meant to be.

dead rabbit and the circus, posted 13 Mar 2005 at 15:34 UTC by raskol » (Fixture)

Last Saturday, March 5, I was in Illinois to see a friend from high school get married. At that wedding I saw my friend Tim, whom I've known since I was four. He informed me he was getting married in June. It never ends. Not that I mind, because this wedding visit enabled me to go to a show in Plainfield, Il, where Dead Rabbit was playing, as well as Matt J. [aka the villain, aka daddy] So that was spectacular. Dead Rabbit has one of the most organically driven song writing abilities of anyone I've know to write and record and perform. He's really genius. And he played solo for about 8 songs, and then was joined by Ryan Krestel on the Drums for two songs. After that spectacle, Matt J. took the stage and played about 5 songs, all quite somber and contemplative. But after those five he was feeling lonely, so he invited derek [dead rabbit], ryan, michael rittgers and chris hayden [current villain's theory players], jose gunter, and myself up on the stage. And so, with two acoustic guitars, a two piece drum set, several percussion items and many mics, we had an impromptu blue stone reunion. In perfect fashion we played for two hours, some songs jamming too long but we didn't care, chris taking a washroom break mid set, and slight confusion over what tunes we could all play. The remembered list includes 'possible apostle', 'am I the change', 'on yellow', 'skin patches', 'lonesome traveler', 'tin a', & 'traveling band'. I was aglow, it was so much fun. Most of this post means nothing to you readers, but those that know any blue stone history, well, I hope you catch a smile here. I was out till 4 am, DOA Sunday morning, and therefore little able to catch much more visiting before I early Monday. I'll see all you rock and rollers in Chicago at the end of April.

This show will sell out within the next couple weeks. I highly recommend seeing them (and buying all of their albums) They have a habit of picking really good bands as openers as well, though i forget who's opening with them this time around. Friday Night Prep, posted 25 Apr 2005 at 18:16 UTC by raskol » (Fixture)

As if there wasn't enough rock in the forecast, I wanted to inform you chicago locals that the suburbs will be offering an appetiser show this friday to prep you for the Saturday Night Blitz. This Friday, out in Plainfield , at MoeJoe's, starting at 9:15, A Villain's Theory and Dead Rabbit will be performing. A Villain's Theory contains Matt J. and Chris H. from the old Blue Stone, along with Michael R. [the engineer on the first ever slow learners christmas demo]. Dead Rabbit is Derek S., Jose G., and Ryan K., all 4171 / Blue Stone alums. And they are superdupercool! I will be warming up the crowd, playing random tunes with Matt J., with Erik [depending upon when he shows up], Chris H., Laura L., Derek, and whomever else may be there. So if you come early, don't be surprised to suddenly find yourself with a tambourine or egg shaker. After the listed acts, the dead horse will be kicked - Blue Stone will ignite one last earsplitting offering. Find out more about MoeJoe's here.

i will be there, posted 26 Apr 2005 at 01:05 UTC by baggins » (Fixture)

We stumbled upon 'The Slow Learners' recently. Actually, someone in Philadelphia emailed us thinking we were them. We set them right and then made them walk the plank. If push comes to naming shove, they have the 'the', and we don't. But it did make me look into registering the name. No rush, I found out as of right now, since we are not in conflicting geographical markets. But, for future prosperity, we're going to have to do something about this. Hopefully it won't come to canon blows. As for CD's, we have a few of 'the whale...' and we are actually going to print a few more of the 'harpoon' ep, because that bugger went all out. In fact, I never got my copy. But, let me know what you need or want, and we'll get the hook-up set-up.

re: myspace, posted 25 May 2006 at 09:29 UTC by pedro » (Tourist)

instant traffic. people spend all day just loafing around myspace -- which is the same as they do on the internet -- except that myspace effectively "shrinks" the internet for a particular subculture. plus, fans will link to bands, which helps people find music like another kind of music but that their own favorite bands might not know about or link to. Additionally, the whole "friends" feature essentially makes links to and from your site automatically.

So Pedro and Merc drove north to Monterey for the weekend, and many fun things ensued, including a Radiohead concert at the Greek Theatre on the UC-Berkeley campus.

Wow. First of all, going to shows in Northern California is no harder than taking a nap. Even for a Radiohead show: we parked perhaps a mile away from the venue, had a leisurely walk, arrived after the first band started. For a general admission show, and Radiohead, this would normally mean sitting perhaps 17 miles away, behind a pole. But lo and behold we walk no more than 40 feet into the outdoor venue and end up standing 50 feet from the stage (75?). Mr. Carlson put it perfectly by stating he's been farther from the stage at redvinegar shows.

And man it was amazing. It's been awhile since I've seen a band of this "stature", and I tend to forget just how loud and tight and amazing a show can be. Played a fair amount of OK (opened with Airbag, later played Paranoid Android, No Surprises, closed with whatever the last song on OK is called). Did a fair amount from Hail to the Theif (after opening with airbag, they went into 2+2=5, which was ridiculous) and Kid A. They did perhaps 9 brand new songs, which covered the spectrum from Hip Hop beats to Latin-style hand clapping to vampire is in my closet and nibbling on my dog creepy tunes. Oh, and then they pulled out some Arena Rock in the shape of Black Star and Fake Plastic Trees and it was all so massive you just kind of had to small and get those little annoying tears in your eyes that you can pass off as pot eyes to save your rock cred.

It was beautiful. The Greek theatre is small, and ringed at the top of the venue by tall pine and coastal redwood. As the show went on, fog started to descend into the ampitheatre and hung above us. So good to be there with friends, or family; I forget which is which these days.

Oh, and afterwards Pedro took us to this dope 50s 24-diner in SF and as we were leaving a good looking gentleman asked Carlson, "where have you been all my life?" As if he didn't know - PEC was busy filming that hit television show with those two adorable little twins!

the secret machines in the round, posted 5 Sep 2006 at 17:21 UTC by dogmanphil » (Fixture)

BURBANK, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- August 03, 2006 -- In their typically innovative fashion, propulsive rock trio Secret Machines are throwing away the mold when it comes to staging their upcoming fall tour. Intending to create an extraordinary and memorable concert event for their fans, the band have done away with the common end stage set-up, and will instead appear on an elevated circular platform in the center of each venue, allowing the audience to gather around them just a few feet away. Playing provides a truly communal live experience for the audience, who will be standing close enough to brothers Brandon and Benjamin Curtis and Josh Garza to feel their sweat.

"We want to break down barriers between audience and performer in order to have the audience become a bigger part of the musical experience," says Brandon. He continues, "We want our fans to literally be a part of the performance with us, and playing in the round allows for that unique opportunity."

The circular staging -- which the New York-based Secret Machines first employed last spring for the CD-release parties for their new album "Ten Silver Drops" -- is perfect for the album's "other-worldly atmospherics" and "deeply grooving psycho-outs" (as Spin Magazine put it). Listening to "Ten Silver Drops" "feels a bit like watching theater: personal moments repurposed for dramatic perfection," says Filter Magazine. In addition, URB wrote of the album: "The Secret Machines secure their position at the helm of indie rock's royal court by combining the musical genes of our classic rock ancestors with their forward-thinking lyricism and arrangements, resulting in an ass-kicking sophomore effort."

You need to check out Hair Supply, "The greatest Heavy Metal tribute to Air Supply in the tri-state area!" Go to hairsupply.org and click on video to watch their live montage of "All Out of Love." All I can say is wow.

By the way, they played the "3rd Annual Lebowski Fest", an annual event of genius I wasn't aware of. They Might Be Giants, Will Oldham and My Morning Jacket (in costume) have also played these festivals dedicated to the Dude.

I will be in Chicago at Martyrs' tomorrow night for my 2nd Storyhill show in 4 days. One of my friends who was in Madtown and is now in Chicago for a veterinary conference is a huge fan, so despite seeing them here Wednesday night, I am going again. Good times.

Say hi to Chicago for us. I'm sure there will be some North Parkers at the show; they have a lot of fans there, or did anyway. Probably none that you know though!

tix were kind of pricey, but then, it's robert plant! and alison kraus -- and if the touring band is the same as on the record, it's a pretty stellar band

... was AWESOME.

Definitely one of, if not the best show I've ever seen.

It wasn't the most even show ever -- some songs were noticeably imperfect (and Robert's voice started to go by the end) but it just didn't matter. They weren't perfect because they were trying to do something really unique. Now, while a few songs weren't stellar, the vast majority of the show was totally incredible. And even the "non-stellar" stuff was just so cool. We've lost this in pop music -- everything has to be perfect, which of course means that you can't really stretch as far or you risk faltering.

Robert and Alison sounded just as good together live as on the record, and so did the band, which last night included T-Bone and Buddy Miller(!) I assume because Marc Ribot is on tour with Tom Waits(?). Anyway, Buddy was really awesome to have in the live band because he can really tear it up and wail and there were some real barn-burners in the set. Holy majoly can that guy play guitar.

Then there was also Stuart Duncan -- this multi-instrumentalist guy who played banjo, mandolin, fiddle, guitar --- maybe more. He also sang and several of the highlights were him playing. One fiddle duet with Alison was incredible, and in particular there was a song where he did an electric fiddle solo that I literally thought was an insane guitar solo from Buddy Miller until I could see what was going on. That solo was literally mind blowing.

They did some great Zep / solo Plant covers ("I'm in the mood for a melody" mixed with "Mathie Grove"), Black Dog, and a bunch of really killer stuff. They did a 4-part "Down to the River to Pray" with Alison, Robert, Buddy, and Stuart. It seemed to me like they probably had a hard time picking what to put on the record, and I'm going to have to ask Phil to find me some bootlegged shows just to hear some of those songs again.

The other cool thing was that they really mixed up the set; T-Bone did two songs, Primitives (from Criminal Under my Own Hat) and Bon Temps Roulez -- a creole scorcher -- which was alhp's favorite from the night. Alison did a little solo set, and Robert had a few songs that he did solo. Robert definitely had his stage presence going on, but he wasn't hogging the limelight at all; some of his singing was from a mic behind the band.

All in all it was an incredible show.

(Pictures of the same tour. I disagree with this guy's criticism, but to each their own. It's cool that they change up the material.)

Grace Potter and The Nocternals, posted 26 Jul 2008 at 13:15 UTC by smax » (Fixture)

I've been pretty disappointing with live music lately. De La Soul Thursday night was much better people watching than music watching. The Ministry show a couple months ago was pretty cool, but there's a 16 year old boy in my soul that still just loves Ministry. Manson a few weeks before that was ok, but the venue was terrible.

The only two shows I've seen in 2008 that have been really impressive are Jose Gonzalez and a show at Snowbird last week. I really like Jose Gonzalez, so it wasn't a surprise at all that he was amazing. I paid for his music... that says a lot about a band.

Grace Potter and The Nocturnals played an amazing show at Snowbird last week. I had never heard of them and honestly, wasn't that enthusiastic about going to the show after listening to a few clips online. The show was awesome. A few great covers, but mostly just rock solid originals. They're awesome live, and their live shows on archive.org are great (and free). The album that I've heard is good, but not as good. So, if anyone out there can see the band, do it. Buy a t-shirt or something. Give Grace a hug. I guarantee you'll have a crush on her by the end of the show. Oh and the drummer, he's like watching a muppet, but that might just be "animal" on the front of his kick-drum. Pictures are here.

Kevin, 1acy and I are going to see Beck at the Aragon Ballrm (Chicago) on 10-3, which is a long time away. If any of you end up there, let me find you and say hello! We don't get to the city for fun very often.

Hello.

haven't been on for a long time now, but i am here to spread the word about a band that a couple of guys i work with are in.

Their name is the subject header, and their website with their music is their name.com.

A very solid group that's pretty hard to describe. Lots of different influences. They're playing the beat kitchen on sept. 5th, so come out and support your local bands (if you live in chicago)

History: Telluride Bluegrass festival. The good: Conor Oberst, The House band, about 80% of the music we saw. The really good: Crooked Still and the David Byrne show. Both were great. Basically, if you ever get the chance, hit Telluride for the bluegrass. Hopefully I'll head back for Blues and Brews in September.

Other random shows of this summer that were good: The Black Keys, M. Ward, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Georgia Satellites and a few other locals. Iron and Wine are playing next week. Maybe summer isn't so bad.

Iron & Wine & Okkervil River are playing tonight for free.
