seemed like there should be a topic for live musical performance (aside from the redvinegar live show topic). post show listings, concert reviews, esoteric gear questions, and all music-performance related stuff here.
Saw the Concert in Central Park on channel 11 tonight. what a cool duo these guys were. Art Garfunkel is so underrated. i loved watching his performance. he was so real and un-rock star about the whole thing. he loved the fans more than Paul Simon, it seemed (not to rag on PS). just a cool performance, and fun to watch. their harmony and their lyrics really set them apart from a lot of other pop/folk musicians.
redvinegar will be playing this wed. at the lyon's den. anyone want to go?
@ the Metro july 8-9
i am planning on going to this it would be great to get some people together.
Once again I missed a King's X show. This time I was all set to go until I realized I was scheduled to play at church that weekend plus it cost more than I had anticipated. But they are coming back to the region in July, so maybe I'll finally go see them. Also for those in Chicago, they are playing Double Door this Sunday and then coming back and playing out in Crystal Lake in July.
I wonder if King's X is the same band I say at Cornerstone in the mid 90's. They were still doing covers then. Any idea?
i wouldn't be surprised.
I think their first album was '87 or '85 -- they have been known to do a few covers (like Manic Depression, which ROXX!) but they had at least 2 albums of material by the 90s, so I don't know. BUt if they were called King's X, and they played Cornerstone, then they probably were them.
I did some googling for King's X and cornerstone but came up with nothing. And the king's X tour archive was not helpful either. I ended up spending an hour or so reading old interviews with the band. Not a bad way to waste some time.
Speaking of cornerstone, this year Jason Harrod, The Choir, Pedro the Lion, and a whole buch of other good bands will be there this summer.
Not a show I was at (I wish), but Life on planet groove is an awesome live Maceo Parker recording. I highly recommend it for all your funk needs.
Yeah. It was in Cologne in 1992, I think. I saw him in like 1996, and it was a big space so it lacked the intimacy of his club performances.
ok so there is a bunch of great music coming this summer to chicago. i want to go to a bunch, but money is an issue. so, i was wondering if there was any shows that maybe any of you would join me and go see/listen to. then that might help me weed out the one i can live without going too.

i believe they are playing with another dope band called roadside monument. i'd like to see them, and i'd like to check out PTL as well. i've heard so much good stuff about them, its time i found out what the buzz is all about. also, Tool is playing august 29th (my birthday!!) and i think im going to try to go if there are still tickets when i can afford them. if anybody is interested then woohoo. let me know, we'll figure something out.
Oddly, The Scorpions were the entertainment for the opening of the Tour de France. Insert "we're big in Europe" joke here.

wow! what a show. she was great! her guitarist kicked my ass! they played for about two hours. a bunch of the set was new stuff. they were just trying them out. i guess they are about to go into the studio. the last song they played called "real life bloody fingers and broken guitar strings" and dedicated it to john entwistle.
well, friday king's x will be in crystal lake. pete and i are going. i'm hopeing wagner, erik, pablo will go too. can't wait.
Where is this place again? Spike's in Crystal Lake?
Spike's
no dice for me, as you already knew. how was it? i was broke and spending time...elsewhere...
let me just say that; you guys really did miss out. I say that not really to rub it in, because I know that you were having a good time where you were at, and rubbing it in would only make me look silly (since you dudes are unrubbable) -- but seriously, it was awesome, and if you ever get a chance to see them in person, go for it.
i'm really sorry erik and wags you didn't go to see king's x. you both would have loved it! i was maybe one of the best concerts i've ever been too. for sure top ten.
lukas- mad props for the heads up on the show! i was thinking about you.
i'll just say that it was amazing to be inches away from ty. he even let me play with his guitar at the end of the encore... which was MOAN JAM!!!! ohhhhh it was so... i only wish ake, lukas, erik... everyone. i wish everyone was there cause it would have been a great way to be intruduced to their music.
RAAAWWWK!!!!!!
I'm kicking myself for not going to the show down in virginia. Now if I want to see them I have to go to one of the King's X - Dream Theater - Joe Satriani shows. DAMN

the Boss is on letterman tonight
emmylou harris is on leno
and this up and coming guy howie day who has a great "help" on the "i am sam" soundtrack is on the criag killbourn show tonight.
that is all.
And there will be a huge drum off between Max and Moon.(Moon will win, obviously.)
max will pull out a shotgun in slow motion and yell and andy will scream "NNOOOOOO!" and jump in front of moon taking the shotgun shots in the gut. then conan will pull out a gun from under the desk, also in slow motion he will yell "MAAAX YOOOOUUU BAASTAAARD!" and will gun down max.
wait andy isn't on the show anymore so moon would get shot. we can't play on conan. sorry.
What about the guys in mullets, and the one guy like, pumps his arm up in the air, and then shoots himself in the gut, but when he falls down, his mullet wig like, flys off his head and he tries to catch it, but then it's obvious he wasn't really shot and... well. anyone who actually saw that is laughing, and noone else is, so I'll quit now. That was so awesome.
- Jethro Tull - Ravinia, August 13th (i believe. i know its next tuesday) i wonder if any of you will brave this show with me. i am going. (plus, its only like 12 bucks or so, and Ravinia is a decent place to go and see a show and chill...)
- Clutch - The Cubby Bear, August 28th. tickets not on sale yet. oldpossumus checked with TCB and apparently they aren't sure whether they're going through ticketmaster(evil) or not. i hope they don't.
- Tool w/ Tomahawk - United Center, August 29th (my birthday!!) tickets have been on sale for a while. they hadn't sold out last time i heard. but who knows. plus, they are $$$, like $45 or so.
i don't think i'll be able to afford Tool. but that means we can all do something cool on my birthday. im not planning it. somebody else might, who knows. i don't do that.
We're going to see her tomorrow night, hopefully... she's an incredible songwriter and a great singer... she's really grown on me in the last few years.
The show was great -- she has a fantastic band, and she's amazing. Her voice is seriously incredible -- and she's an awesome songwriter. If you want to listen to her music, go to KCRW and look up Patti Griffin in the Morning Becomes Eclectic archive. YOu'll need a Real player to hear it, unfortunately.
Or just go buy her new album, 1000 Kisses.
For those that are up here with me in the wilds of Lake County... A colleague at work has asked me to publicise a concert given by the band for which she sings.
Anyway, they are playing on the main stage at LindenFest tonight at about 7 pm. Corner of Grand Ave and Sand Lake (west of Gurnee Mills). I have to admit that this will be the first time I will be seeing them live but their CD is excellent. They do rawk, blooz, Tamla Motown, Soul and all that good stuff. Drop in if you are in the area.
the band that redvinegar shares a bass player with has a show at the Lyon's den tomarrow. that is tuesday the 13th. three fold chord plays around ten. 1934 W. Irving Park. it is 21 and over. i believe that it is free. please, come and hang with me if you've got nottin to do.
The National Folk Festival came to Bangor Maine this past weekend.I'm just gloating.
the band that shares tim hawkinson with redvinegar is playin g tonight at the lyon's den. it's kinda big for them to be playing on a friday night there so if anyone can support the local band, they start at 10pm. there is a five dollar cover (not there idea). but, you might get a free copy of there new cd. i'll be going if anyone else would like to travel with me.

jen and i just bought tickets for dylan, nov. 1st, which will be five years from peter larsons death. pete really liked dylan so we desided that that would be a good idea to do.
how much were tickets? i'd be interested in seeing that.
also, i checked out the latest Rolling Stone issue (mostly because i was driving a charter where i had a couple hours to kill and the cover said something about Guns N Roses) and the blurb about GNR said that Chinese Democracy, their long-awaited new album is getting closer to being released, but no date was given. its been said for years, but its nice to know that RS is keeping tabs on Axl. there was also some info on a show they did somewhere in Europe, and it hinted at the possibility of them starting a tour sometime soon. how cool would that be?
big john said that this was the best thing about the show at the aragon ballroom

Saturday, September 28, one of my favorite bands is playing.
Stavesacre
They are play at the Wonderland Ballroom in Elgin, IL. for the price of 20 dollars you get to see Living Sacrifice, Stavesacre, Embodyment, Underoath, Echocast and CR33 and get the new Living Sacrifice and the new Stavesacre CD for Free!
I realise that most of you aren't intrested but, baggins probably is. So, if we are going maybe someone else would like to too.
These are Christian hard/metal/rock bands. Stavesacre is one of the few bands for me that when I listen or see them live that its a religious experience.so, even if your not intrested in going check them out sometime.
Here are some live videos of stavesacre playing in dallas.
i didn't realize those other bands were playing too! rock! underoath is really dope, from the little i've heard, and embodyment is solid, if not too imaginative. i don't know the other 2, but i'd love to check them out. LivSac is cool, too. is Tim going?
Is that some Freshman Death-Metal band from North Park?
The Wonderland Ballroom is a good venue too. The funny thing is on days there aren't metal concerts they have ballet lessons there. So I'd recommend getting your dates right.
do you still wanna go see stavesacre? let me know.
if you are still planning on going, so am i. cash is a bit low, but i really wanna go. call me. also, there is a party at Isaac and Meagan's tonight (fri.) i don't know why or what for or who, but im sure if people from here wanted to show up, it would be cool.
i personally wonder how well the ticket sales will be for this tour. there are mixed feelings about the gunners, and well, who knows if they will flop financially or not? if we don't get tix for the Chicago show, there is a list here for their other dates they have announced. i'd be willing to drive to a show or several, if anybody is interested. hmmm... think about it...
baggins, i can't call you. and i can't e-mail you. so, if i deside to go, which it looks like i am. tim and i will get you a ticket. ok? it's 20 bucks. thats ok right? right?
why aren't you answering me? hell-o baggins?
i will email you from my newest acocunt which i will not post on here (thanks for that tip pedro) and give you my digits. that sounds awesome. i can drive if you want.

Wowza! I was browsing the upcoming shows at the 9:30 Club in D.C. and ther are just too many shows I must see. Brad - 10/26; Medeski Martin & Wood - 10/27; Blues Traveler - 10/31; Amon Tobin - 11/6; Leo Kottke & Mike Gordon - 11/10; Pork Tornado - 11/13; Galactic - 11/23. That's just at the 9:30 Club. The State Theatre has got Leftover Salmon, Dark Star Orchestra, DJ Logic & Vernon Reid, Joshua Redman (tonight), and the North Mississippi Allstars. Too many shows, not enough cash money. I think if I had to pick two shows, I would would go see Amon Tobin and Leo Kottke with Mike Gordon.
you should see brad dude. i would love to see leo. i should check and see if he is coming around here. but, there are far too many show i already want to go too. i guess it is ROCKTOBER! it's such a good rocktober it's going into rockvember. don't forget about the redvinegar show the 25th lukas.
Fantastic Choice. End of story.
If any of you ever get a chance, go see Medeski Martin and Wood. If you can't go see the bwest drum solo I've ever heard of you can download their shows.Sometimes I really like the internet.
that club used to host all the premiere hardcore acts back in the early '80s. wish i'd been around for that.
North Mississippi All Stars kick serious ass! r.l. burnside's grandson plays drums for them. i saw them open for Jon Spencer Blues Explosion about 5 years ago and NMAS blew me away. check out their label, fat possum records, for more tasty blues nuggets.
GNR tix are on ebay now...
so I saw DJ jazzy jeff last night at a bar in Pittsburgh. He wasn't too hot, but while I was there, I got three demos out to interested parties, and I'm doing a studio session tonight at one of the kids house.Wilfare Line will become a household name.
We want mp3s!
The German Lieutenant's Woman and I, accompanied by certified public alley-lurker Steve Dahlin, saw Lewis Black (The Daily Show, Comedy Central) at the Vic last Friday. My stomach hurt all day Saturday from laughing so hard. Also we saw the World's Worst Comedienne. Dahlin was actually praying for a rifle, as we were in the balcony . ..
Go see Lewis Black. He's F***n amazin'!
SCHUBAS TAVERN
Damien Jurado
sat.19th.tomarrow!!!
10pm 10 bucks!
Songs: Ohia and Damien Jurado - Saturday, October 19 - 10:00 p.m. New City - Pick by Tony Barnett - Thursday, October 17 On this year's "I Break Chairs," the terminally melancholy Damien Jurado makes a left turn. Known for stark, introspective alterna-folk that falls between Nick Drake and Richard Buckner, Jurado jumps from being an endearing but spiritually damaged solo voice playing from the shadows to the frontman of a rock band, albeit a moody rock band. Produced by Pedro the Lion's David Bazen, "I Break Chairs" finds Jurado leading Gathered in Song, his version of Crazy Horse. The disc rings with a little jangle here, a little emo there, and Jurado's unmistakable raspy voice throughout. While fans of the lone-wolf Jurado might be a bit disappointed, fans of Will Johnson and Centro-matic should find "I Break Chairs" a keeper. However, tonight Jurado will not have the band in tow, instead performing in a duo. Therefore, those who have been with him since the early Seattle days might be pleased.
i think laura and i are gonna go. but, you have to buy ticks on-line. so, i'll be getting two inless someone would like too go aswell.
dude. what about Isaac Sporrong's Bachelor Party? aren't you going to that?
i will be there as well. but, probably not the whole time.
well he was amazing of course. even looked more like baggins this time, with a black flag t-shirt. it was just damien and a drummer on a couple of songs. i yelled out "letters and drawings" and he played it right then, which was cool. so, i requested a few others in between songs later and some drop yelled out SHUT UP. but, damien "trapoline" which i had yelled out for. so, all in all i din't feel too bad. he played two out of the four i asked for so TAKE THAT DORK!
Saw some decent music music last night. I doubt any of you will be in the Portland, ME area any time soon to hear him, but I know many of you can appreciate this song. And hey... free music is good music right?
wow what a weekend in store for me! i have an extra ticket to brad if anyone what to go with mr. carlson and i.
if i can figure a way to get up there, i dont mind checkin 'em out, maybe. though i don't know when i can get you the cash for the ticket.
saturday night. which makes it ALRIGHT. ya dude if no one else wants to go thats cool. give me a call tomarrow afternoon.
wow! dylan was great of course, but he played covers which i've never heard him do. he did brown sugar and old man. it was a amazing show. i'm glad that laura was there.
So I went and saw Pedro the Lion at the Black Cat last night. It was a really good show and the Black Cat is a nice little room. The played lots of songs and answered questions from the audience. They must have nedeed to get on the road though because they played their last song and they immediately started packing up their gear. Rocking good time and I should have bought a CD or a cool shirt. Opening was Scientific and Seldom. Seldom was the drummer from Pedro the Lion and two other guys. I didn't hear Scientific play, but they had cool t-shirts.
man, two words to describe this show:let down.
i guess the fact that i thought i was meeting people there and i ended up all alone added to the fact that i had no cash after paying cover and buying two beers added to the fact that i had just come from a long hard nite a work made for a not so good experience.
but still, BHP left much to be desired. they've definatley grown and matured as a band. but for me, its been in all the wrong ways.
perhaps seeing these guys play as a two peice to a crowd of 25-30 at the fireside back in '98 was burned a little too hard into my memory. the abbey was fucking packed!
oh well.
baggins i looked for you, to no avail.
i was there man. with lauraL., peterC., Derek and Jose. first pillar back on the right, near the merch table. i also looked for AmyS., who i talked to at about 9:30 pm and she said she was gonna meet me there. i am sorry you were disappointed. i liked the show, and i was glad i went. they were pretty cool. i like hearing really original bands. i mean, i could hear a lot of influences (Pink Floyd, GYBE, Elliot Smith, Blue Meanies, and a couple others that have excaped my head for now), but they weren't like a rip-off of any of them in any way. i always try to take new bands i hear and figure out what other bands i know that they may have been influenced by. and i try to think of what songs they might cover well. i thought BHP would sound really cool doing a Misfits cover, or Black Sabbath's Black Sabbath. i also thought they would rock in a different way if they played twice as fast. not that they were too slow, or anything. their dirge-ness is a part of the draw. but i bet they'd be interesting and super intense playing double time.
Also, Joseph Arthur rocked as well. quite the musician.
the show last night was one of the most beautiful shows i have ever been to.
the music, the lights, the video screen, everything was just amazing.
the guitar player is really rad, he mainly uses a cello bow. he also sings into the guitar pickups too. he has one of the most amazing voices i've ever heard.
if you ever get a chance go and see them otherwise, pick up one of the cd's. if you want to hear some of their music check out the download page.

is anyone else remotley interested in seeing these giants of electronic music destroy the metro on the 27th of may? tickets are like $25.
27th of november.... its so clear out today, my mind was in spring- time.
the boys just got done playing on letterman and did "i am mine" the single most of you have heard on the radio. tomarrow night they will be on again. so set your vcr's or tivos.
monday is the night of all nights. pray that axl shows up.
i saw a good show tonite. it was at the empty bottle.soviet opened. they're kind of a synthy-dancey-80's revival yet very modern kind of group. very fashionable, catchy and at the same time lacking any pretension.
then add (n) to x played. never before have i seen a music group dig up so much of music's past for the sole purpose of rocketing it into the future. imagine iggy pop, david bowie, henry rollins, R2D2, max hedroom, an atari 2600 and your old yamaha turntable all starting a punk band together. imagine chaneling the musical spirits of MC5, the who, kraftwerk, the sex pistols, velvet underground, NEU!, suicide, afrika bambaataa, gary numan, black flag, radiohead, and spiritualized and feeding them through about 9 different synthesizers (all analog ones) a guitar, a bass (both with about a billion pedals) and a real- live drum set. (they use drum loops as well.)
too techno to be drum n' bass, too drum n' bass to be punk, and way too fucking punk to resemble something a producer could create on his own using something silly like a computer.
oh yeah, and after this show, the drum set is no longer my favoite instument to watch someone play live. the theremin now is. what other instrument can produce such a vast array of other-worldly sounds while 95% of the time the musician playing it isnt even touching it?
i cant even imagine what seeing this group would be like in a huge venue with a bevy of lights and video to accompany them. then again, i dont want to. check this group out. for real.
I totally would have gone to this one if I had been free and known about it...(pedro) i've got two machines

welcome likes these guys a lot. i saw that they were playing, and i considered going (since i like to experience bands i've heard a lot about live for the first exposure) but i didn't realize that it was happening already.
i tried to win front row GNR tix on the radio for like 3 hours today. it was busy the whole time. literally all 3 hours. even when you weren't supposed to call in... i know, i know: inkblot already hooked me up with some rad tix, and he is the man. but if i won front row, i am positive i could sell the other 2 off. anyway, im looking forward to the show monday night. full details to follow...
you guys and your crazy underground rock n' roll. I went to see Glassjaw at the Metro last night. Did you all know the Metro is celebrating 20 years of bringing Chicago badass music?! Allright, well now you do. So seriously now, Glassjaw was amazing. But American Nightmare was even better. Sadly I missed the Blood Brothers, becasue I've heard so much about them. But American Nightmare is a great hardcore band. The pit was hysterical to watch. It has been a long time since I've seen so many kids, pulling chains and karate dancing/fighting. (You all know what I'm talking about, don't you?) Well it was good. Alot of energy and the crowd didn't suck too much.
"nan-er-nar-er-nan-er-nan-er-neeeeeeeeoooooowwwww-we-ow-wee-ow-chugga- chugga-chugga-chugga-rrrrraaaaahhhhh!"blood brothers rule.
glassjaw... i'm not so hot on them. one thing's for sure, i definatley lost some respect for vincent gallo after he agreed to be in their new video.
and i do crazy windmills, sister.
buncha choreographed inbred crap, if you ask me. i try real hard not to hit them when i see it. i mean, they get all decked out in their hardcore regalia with the bandanas around their faces and stuff, and you can feel them dripping and drooling with fierceness and animosity, but then they go and do those dumb-ass dances that just make you giggle. i pushed somebody who was windmilling towards me once, and somebody motioned to me that pushing was a no-no. i promptly flicked that guy off.
in other live show news, GNFNR decimated the Allstate Arena. a full report worthy of such legend will follow in the next few days. let's just saw the perfect end to such a show was stepping out of the arena into a night of November Rain.
YOU FUCKIN' FUCK AND FUCKER BITCH! Wags, I would of given my left testicle to see that show and I don't even have testicles. Man, you gotta email me, or gimme a call, or emil me for my number so you can give me a call. I wanna know every detail. I think you tell a better story than, Karah, who was also there. I don't care if its nothing but a GNR cover band...its a GNR cover badn with Axl Mutha Fuckin' Rose...and I'm into hardcore dancing, I think it's amusing to say the least. And some dudes can do some crazy roundhouse action that'll blow your mind.
I AM. BANSHEE BOT!
what's your email?
if you put 'waggins' in front of the domain name for this page, you'll get my email address. send me your phone number. we should hang out more, anyways. when's the next awesome show that we're going to? remember i like the hardcore. i wanna see a HC show with you. and i expecially want to see you do the lawnmower thing. i might even be convinced to hook elbows up back-to-back and do the whole kick-your- legs-in-the-air-while-somebody-spins-you-around thing'.
it was awesome to see Karah at the GNR show. good to share moments like those with good friends. we missed you sorely there.
I heard that GNR played a sweet rendition of "Bridge over Troubled Water" is that true? MMMWAHAHAHA, "like a whiny-ass bridge over troubled water" I might be a rock, but an island? I think not my friend. Wags call me for Friday night Mayhem, oh and Pat too, if you read this.
bluestone plays the wood friday night. i was planning on going to that. other mayhem is ensuing? wow. look out albany park.
So last friday night, Karna and I headed downtown to the MCI Center and heard The Other Ones w/ Robert Hunter. The Other Ones are the surviving memebers of the Grateful Dead w/ Jimmy Herring (guitar), Rob Barraco (keys), and Jeff Chimenti (keys). They put on a great show and the playing was stellar in most cases. I heard the occasional flub and Bobby forgot the lyrics to Throwing Stones. They didn't just play the crowd favorites and call it a night. They stepped out with some old dead and had a couple really nice jam sections. Robert Hunter, the Dead's longtime lyricist played at the set break. He's a great poet, but the dude can't sing to save his life. But besides that, it was a great show full of noodling goodness. Plus they started on time so it ended early enough to grab some beers and free pretzels at the Capitol City Brewing Company.
LATE NIGHT WITH DAVID LETTERMAN - MONDAY, NOVEMBER 25 Set your VCR's and TiVo's for an AUDIOSLAVE performance that you won't want to miss....
They're a breath of fresh air. Also, check out Pegboy at the Metro 12/23.
Les Claypool's Frog Brigade is playing the Vic tonight. I believe I was told this and then forgot. Damn. Oh well, on the off- chance anyone is going, please post here and tell me what I missed. Sigh.
Saturday, December 7 - Over The Rhine's Holiday Show (Full Band) with Bill Mallonee - 7:30 p.m. (18+) & 10:30 p.m. (21+) - $15W - (R)
the boys from irland will be on CBS on friday at 9:00. it's a show from slane castle! so, set your VCR's and TiVo's!

Schubas- Sat. Feb. 22ndAn Evening with David Wilcox 7pm - $18.00W

of course, it was also nearing five hours of me on my butt, without the three bucks for a coke, AND next some old ladies that never quite gave up on the singing thing. I was very cool though...a little pricey though (55$)
give it a try
I saw the whole "Ring Cycle" at the Lyric when I was a student at North Park... it was awesome.neoacerbitas, who was singing Brunnhilde? Was it Jane Eaglen?
tuesday at the metro...baggisn you're the only one who will care. Is Dillenger Escape Plan, Mastadon, Tubring, and Yakuza...Paul, Karah, and I are going, You should check it out!
Jane Eaglen, apparently this cast they have this year is supposed to be like the best wagnerian singers ever, all together. But, as I'm not really a singer it's not too important to me. The Musical Preparation staff includes this lady named Elizabeth Buccheri, and I saw one of our librarians when I was there. It was so cool, I like that I've managed to only see wagner at the opera and nothing else...though Ireally want to go see Thais, Renee Fleming is singing the title role, but tickets are all but gone so whatever.
Man... Betty Buccheri was by far the scariest person in the music faculty until I graduated. I think she must try and be scary to students, and then when you graduate, she's all excited to be your friend. Well, that's cool about that show. Jane Eaglen is incredible... is she still really big? I hope she gets healthy.
i've never seen you at any operas. i swear... wsa it Der Fledermouse?
i could be interested. we'll see how the wallet feels on tuesday, not to mention whether i can swing it with my commitment to work this week. i am taking over for a whole week, and i need to be at work EVERYDAY at 7am until at least 6pm. booh. anyways, i might be down. we'll see. email me [waggins at the domain of this site (replace 'bbs.' with 'waggins@') ] with your phone number and i will call you to make sure. what time is the show and how much is it? also, i'll bet ulyssess00 might be interested in that show.
Tomorrow is Dillenger Escape Plan and Mastadon 10 bones, at the metro, 6:30pm. we will be there, and we will be rocking. Watch for my rpucnhouse, it's crazy!
i had to work. me so tired. i have worked 70+ hours in the last 5 days. im going to sleep after i catch up on the finer diner.
So i just got back from seeing the Joffrey Ballet production of the Nutcracker...saw some alums there too, i can't remember the names right now though so, whatever. It was so awesome, my bassoon teacher is absolutely phenomenal too. I've decided that I really like ballet, aside from the tights....cause if i wanted to look at that i would just use this internet thingy. Yeah, don't tell anybody though, there is just so much trust involved, there was this one time, where this lady dancer was being held up by this guy, and if he'd've dropped her, yeah, she'd've been gone. Gosh, it really frustrates me that I can't remember the girls names. One was an RA in burgh and one never spoke to me, so i don't know her name anyway...wait, I got it....Darlene Duncan...I saw her outside first and was like "yo baby whassup?" and then I saw her inside again, she totally had box seats....whatever y'all should go.
Clutch is on tour again people. No dates for chciago as of yet, but there should be more soon. Hoorah!www.pro-rock.com
GODSPEED YOU BLACK EMPEROR Abbey Pub, 3/20-21; 3/20 18 & over, on sale noon Saturday (12/21)
JEFF TWEEDY
im totally down for BOTH shows of GYBE at The Abbey (that place rules...). unfortunately, im working the 6th all f'in day. (in charge like last time, for only a couple days though.)
does miss mercurymouth wanna go?
its sold out now.
aarrghh! i was planning on buying a ticket this week. that sucks.
you meant that the Jeff Tweedy show was sold out, not the GYBE show. in which case i will hopefully be getting a ticket this week. if i get around to it.
so, i went to the show last night. it was amazing! to clarify about my dylan quote in my diary. i think that it's funny that people are always comparing people to dylan, jordan, or who ever is looked at as the best in their field. oh, man i just saw the new hendrix!
i have seen dylan a few times. i grew up listening to him. last night i thought a few times that tweedy reminded me of dylan. thats all, i thought it was an amazing show.
I know everybody has their favorite "holy grail" musician who nobody can criticize but I just have to comment on Hendrix. I don't listen to him all the time and I don't even have all of his albums but I feel there's no doubt that he single-handedly changed the face of music. It's so funny to hear respected guitar players talk about him. Townshend and Clapton both talk about their jaws hitting the floor the first time they saw Hendrix play. And how they thought they were going to become obsolete. Neil Young is hilarious with his praise. Anyway, from Little Wing to Voodoo Child, Hendrix is an innovator beyond most others. Hendrix was asked to comment on how he might respond to people criticizing his rendition of the national anthem as being unorthodox and inappropriate. With a genuinely confused look on his face he responded "I thought it was beautiful".
i haven't gone too deep into the history and lore behind jimi, but the music is so different, so innovative, so remarkably unique, and the man could just play! i mean, we're talking virtuoso on a different level than somebody like malmsteen, who has no soul, no emotion, just fast fingers. hendrix could get inside a song and turn it inside-out on itself. its hard to describe. his version of the national anthem rules.
mine is lou reed.but you have to admit, "new dylans" come and go...
but there wil never... NEVER be another james brown... even if they clone him.
A clone of James Brown would not be James Brown, because it would not have lived his life.
looney tunes saloon. laramie and diversey. sat. night 1130P showtime for the boys, though other bands will be playing before. i didn't see it posted by anybody else yet, so i figured 'why not?'.

Pleasure Club with Starflyer 59 and Guest
9pm 18+ - $8.00W/ $10.00D
last night oldpossoms and i went to see solomon burke at the oriental theatre, downtown. it was amazing! possom could explain better about why it was crazy that he was here playing a show that got little to no press. but, the show was only ten bucks. so, we went down after E got off of work found a parking spot on wacker so we didn't have to pay for parking. then, we got to the theater and the box office was closed. but, the lady checking tickets at the door said it was free and that someone higher up said that anyone that wanted to could just come in! it was so rad!
anyways he is playing on leno on monday night.
for more on burke:
his new album don't give up on me

are you kidding me!?!?!?!i love solomon burke. damn it. i just picked up a few old 45s of his....
anyway, if you are in chicago for the PLEASURE CLUB show.... YOU MUST GO!!! THEY ARE THE BEST LIVE BAND I HAVE EVER SEEN!!!
just reminding all chicago residents:PLEASURE CLUB with STARFLYER 59 at schubas, feb 19. $8 in advance, $10 the nite of.
PLEASURE CLUB is not to be missed. you will feel like the ghost of jimi hendrix walked up to you on the street one nite and said "hey, kid... i want to let you in a on a little secret... go see this band."
get this! they are doing Lollapalooza again! it might even be good again.
i would even dig seeing 4/5 of those bands live. i don't like incubus though. and i don't know J5 really. but i have heard good things. what i've heard from QOTSA i liked. what i've heard from Audioslave i liked. and Jane's have always been pretty dang good.
I've also heard good things about J5 but haven't heard them much myself. But they were being played at Best Buy the other day and I recognized the MC Tuna Fish's voice. He's from Ozomatli's first album and they were great.
ok, so i didn't quite know where to post this... but...attn: all chicago residents interested in some free/cheap theatre in the next two weeks:

This is a fun little tidbit of info:
Juice, abaddon, <person>whatever handle evan has on here</person>, and I went to the Smokin Grooves tour this past summer. Outkast headlined, with Cee-lo Green, some dumb r&b singer whose name I forget, The Roots, Lauryn Hill, and J5. Mr. Juice had worked with his little kiddies all day long and was dead tired even before the show started.
Anyways, J5 are 3rd on the bill, and they were incredibly good...very smooth flow, good deliveries, and two of them can sing pretty well. The previously mentioned M.C. Chali-2na (ha ha) is from Chicago originally and was obviously having a good time being in his hometown. Half way through their set, Mr. Juice fell dead asleep. Stone cold asleep. After the set, all of us, except for Juice, who was still knocked out, left our seats to, among other things, get free camels from the promotions tent. When we came back, Juice told us of how Chali came down to the audience and started talking with folks. He comes up to Juice and says, "Hey...you that mutha-** that was sleepin through my set!" (we were third row, and quite visible to the group, I'm sure). Juice explained his situation with the kids and all, 2na (who was only kidding him to begin with) said that was cool, and autographed his ticket. Lucky bastard. But in any case, J5 is great, very good live, and are good with fans
i think i am going to try and come to your show. i'd like to, and most likely it will be the free thursday. do i have to do anything special to get in free, or just show up on thursday?
also, anybody interested in going to see Godspeed You Black Emperor at the abbey next month, there are 3 shows. the first is 18+ the other 2 are 21+. they are on thursday, friday, and saturday nights in like the 2nd-to-last weekend. i personally have a ticket a friend bought for me for the saturday show. im not sure if anybody else has tickets yet, but thats the show im hitting up, so if you're interested, do it to it!!
its only $12. i know welcome, oldpossumus, ulyssess, and instintcofi dig them. dogmanphil, pedro, raskol, josekenobi, cinnamon, chester, bigj, juice, fook, neoacerbitas, im not sure who else, i think most of you would dig them. and the abbey is a great place for a show. come check them out with me. and you'll also see why you can't put a GYBE song on a mix disc.
the last FREE show for KARMA is WEDNESDAY the 19th.i goofed, sorry.
wags, you should come see the one-acts this weekend....
wednesday, not thursday, huh? that sucks. i guess i will have to rearrange some plans. isn't that the night of the precious pleasure club show? and isn't sleater-kinney w/ the black keys playing that night too? oh mercy, what to do?
another fire theft show has been scheduled, according to ticketmaster, but not their website. which is really weird, because their webmaster is cool, and usually puts new stuff up right away. well, its on march 10th in tempe AZ, if anybody's interested in a road trip, email me and persuade me.
Well, if you come through the middle of New Mexico- I'd feed you and let you sleep on my floor....
wags-the pleasure club is indeed that same evening. but it doesn't start until 10:30pm and the play will definatly be done at that point. and it is at schubas which is not far from live bait at all. i was planning on doing both.
regarding the fire theft... there is a slim chance i may be driving to tempe around that time anyway because it is like home now and march 10th is my spring break.... i'll keep you posted.
at any rate, if you decide to go , i can at least find you a place to crash. beau lives in tempe, remember him?
so, unfortunately i would miss your lovely face, and floor, blvd. and i'd probably be crashing at Tony's place in Tucson. but thanks. i am really not prepared for whether or not i will be going to the show (either) on wednesday night. i want to come to your show, grady. i just haven't worked it out yet.
if i DO go to AZ, you have to come to the Fire Theft show with me grady.
I may have seen the best show of my life last night.
check this out!!! (click the tour page)
for those of you who are above clicking links, The Fire Theft are playing the Metro on the 24th!!!! i can't wait!!!! who else is in? this is a show not to be missed.

And they are also opening for sleater-kinney on the 23rd. Busy bees

WHO'S GOING TO SEE THE FIRE THEFT ON MARCH 24TH? YOU WILL REGRET IT IF YOU DON'T!
Oh. Look at that. yeah. Well, I havent heard of either of them. Black Dice just rang a bell.
when do fire theft tickets go on sale? i'm in for sure and most likly jen too.
will post here the second i hear...
i am posting the moment you've all been waiting for. or at least the moment some of us have been waiting for. for you lazy non-link-clicking fools here's the scoop: Fire Theft Tickets on sale Saturday March 1st, at noon. i will be going down to the Metro to buy mine. if anybody else wants tix, let me know. i can't afford to cover a whole bunch, and the limit is 6tix. but if you wanna slip me cash, i will pick some up. but you all can go buy your own at any ticketmaster outlet, or online, or by phone. this show will rule.
i'm down for two!
please people don't wait on this. this will be as cool as seeing sdre at the vic if we get enough people.
baggins maybe we should e-mail people that aren't on here enough. i'll do that now.
i have told enough people about the show. i will try to remind people when i can. but getting your ticket is up to you. i hope everybody is on it before they sell out. and i am pretty sure this show will sell out. there are a lot of people from detroit that are going to come down for the show, and i will hopefully be seeing them beforehand. or else for a cup of coffee afterwards. but i know that a lot of people are going to be hearing about this, and have been waiting for this. its been building up ever since things started moving for this band. don't wait!! im going to the clubhouse on saturday at noon. who else wants to go? phil?
If someone wants me to try and order tix tomorrow morning, I can do that. Email me. My address is in my diary.
Phish last last thursday was very, very, good Sleater Kinney last last Sunday kicked ass, even though I had to sit half way through with violent flu symptoms.I got flaming lips tickets, which will kick butt as well.

godspeed you black emperor last night at the 930 club was stellar. I missed most of black dice and what I heard was so-so. But gybe was really cool. Nine people on stage--drums, cello, several guitars, violin, couple basses, percussion and toys and things. They create these walls of sound that ebb and flow like waves in the ocean (how's that for a cliche?) and when they get going at full tilt it's like being pounded by those waves. I felt like the guy in those old maxell posters. but then they drop off and flow into hauntingly beautiful duets between cello and violin. The film loops were really cool, especially the oil tower fire one which was superimposed over another out-of-focus loop and also the hope loop running over footage of an anti-war protest. I recognized some of the songs (they encored with bbf3) but that's not really important to the enjoyment of a gybe show. tomorrow they play at the scottish temple of freemasonry in baltimore and then you guys get THREE shows at the abbey.
buy you tickets kids! now! befor ethey are gone.
baggins and i are driving up to minnesota the next day to see them after the metro show. ya!
aka jeremy jacobsen is playing at the beat kitchen on 4/4. Chicago gets all the good stuff. [the lonesome organist played in 5ive style with bill dolan who played with tft at the show in seattle (i think). dolan also fronts math funkers heroic doses and is working on a project with the drummer from tft.]

i was actually going to ask you to post all those shows in one listing here. and you did it anyway. r0xx0rr5!!
Also on sale today, Oteil and the Peacemakers at Martyrs on May 2nd.
The main attraction is Oteil Burbridge, a bassist from Aquarium Rescue Unit and currently in the Allman Band. He's collaborated before with Bela Fleck and The Flecktones and members of Phish...probably one of the 10 best bassists in the world. Not quite Victor Wooten, but very, very good.
I saw Oteil with ARU and with Vida Blue and he probably is one of the best players in the world. Also, thanks for the DC shows phil.

the show I saw last night was a little abnormal, but damn good.

we are going to have one hell of a crew going too
i think there is around 12

baggins and i will be there at 4 and plan on going down early to get a good spot
doors open at 6
see you kids at the rock show!
rocked! so did the opening band.
what a show. they were rad in minneapolis as well! rock!
well, the show did rawk! it was cool to see soo many people there. great vibe. or at least in our corner.
so, i was really wanting to tape the show but, didn't want to chance them taking my video camera so i just brought one of my holga cameras. anyways so this kid is in between the railing and the stage right up front with his video camera. damn, i wish i could tape it, i'm thinking. how did he get too, i wonder. he totally isn't with the band. he didn't look much older than 20 if that and well kinda dorky looking. anywas i yell over to him and ask how he got permision to tape. he act all anoyed and said, "i just asked" rudly. "what!?" i asked. "i just came down a few hours early and asked." he said and walked away. man, i was pissed. i could have done that. oh well. so, we rocked out the show was great. then tft ended and the kid ran off before i could ask him for his e-mail address or anything. damn. well, then we were walking out when i saw him down stairs. cool!
i'll go ask him. so, i walk up and say
"hey man! are you on the board or the bands page?"
he says rudly "i've looked at it once."
i think... ok? anyways, "do have e-mail get i get your address?"
then he cuts me off and says "i can't give you a copy if thats what you want!"
what? jerk! so i got pissed and said "well i was going to tape the show tomarrow night and see if you wanted to trade but i guess not." and walked away as he looked all intrested and said "minnesota?"
"yep!" and i walked away.
now, i didn't get to tape the show at the quest but, that was because they wouldn't let any cameras in. but, i was so pissed at this little kid how was be a f'n pick for no reason. gar! anyways there is a video of the show but, it doesn't look like we will ever see it.

Tom Julstrom soloing with the NPU Concert Band.
The featured piece, by Julius Fu?ik is called something along the lines of ?Der Alte Brunnbärr? which translates something along the lines of ?The Old Sorehead? it's a so-called Polka Comique. It should be good and I'd like to use my ?clout? my, critical mass, if you will, of friends to get a whole bunch of people there. It's going to be good, not that good, but good. I guess i don't really care if anyone shows up, i just thought i'd gloat a little (yeah, gloat), cause not too many people get to solo with the band and it's a fun piece to play, and to listen to. Just to refresh your memories, Fu?ik is the composer that wrote the world famous circus calliope song ?Abschied der Gladiatoren?, whatever that translates into it goes something like ?doo doo dododododo doo doo doo dooooo?. So if you want to come, it's free for students and cheap, if it costs anything for other people. we're also playing Mars from the Planets, America the Beautiful, Do Not Go Gentle (into that good night, yes, a little bit of dylan thomas), jamaican rumba, Some sailing song, and one or two other pieces. amazingly, this is the first concert I've ever played with the band that didn't feature a Vaughn Williams piece a Percy Grainger piece, or an Edward Elgar piece, should be interesting eh?
mars was always my favorite piece from the planets. Looks like a good concert.
Have fun and break a you-know-what.
No Vaughan Williams, Elgar OR Grainger??!? Joe has gone MAD!Forget it!
Neil Young and Crazy Horse and Lucinda Williams United Center, Chicago, IL Tue, Jun 17, 2003 7:30pm
Neil Young is Neil Young, true, but I think he's answering his own lyrical question these days.I'm more attracted to Lucinda Williams . . .Too bad I'll be in South Carolina.
Is it sad that Im looking for someone to sell my extra Tom Petty @ the Vic ticket away to? No one has money anymore.
one of our regulars offered me two free tickets to the rocket from the crypt show on thursday at l.a.'s el rey theatre. their manager plays in his band or something. is this an earth day show?
are my favorite band of all time (i am not kidding.)GO see them. you will have an amazing time. especially in LA. they have CRAZY crowds in LA. look for my friend NED, he'll most likely be in the crowd somewhere. he owns 4,000-5,000 cds and if your nice he might just burn some for you.
RFTC are so rad live.... seriously go kL.
does that mean nobody wants to come?
...but I already have committments that night.
Did you guys truly like Overland? Some of the comments have kind of sounded that way...
Cause as a person that was in it, I thought is was corny and melodramatic....
it was the first semester of my freshman year when OVERLAND went up. i still wasn't too sure if the theatre thing was for me yet, but i had just done a musical that spring in high school and loved it.thankfully, i had mono the week of auditions for OVERLAND. i now know a good portion of the cast and respect them all, but i have to say... sitting in LHA, having that thing be my first peek at NP theatre, i was pretty scared. "corny and melodramatic" is putting it nicely...
BigJ, i know you were doing lights on that thing, but i'm sorry, the big gigantic spiral light thing was what did it in for me... it was ridiculous. people were dying on stage and i couldnt help but laugh beacuse it looked like a PSYCHADELIC FREAKOUT on stage.
Yeah, I thought it was really bad... due more to the script than any of the actors. It was funny how corny it was.
fuck fischerspooner.i want to go see THESE GUYS: GOGOL BORDELLO.
they're playing the abbey, MAY 3rd. seriosly, check out their webpage and tell me if you're in. baggins, GYBE is chill with me and all, but there'll be NO ASS-SITTING AT THIS SHOW.
my favorite quote from the press i've read on them so far:
"A lot of people try and define us" [frontman Eugene Hutz] confides, "making up things like Gogol Bordello is the Iggy Pop from West Ukraine, or the Nick Cave from Ugoslavia- but i actually think its a lot simpler. I think we are like the Beatles from Liverpool."
Genius.
Adam Wade, the drummer from the Jealous Sound (who opened for the fire theft for the bulk of their tour), mentioned that he saw these guys and they were really good. we'll see... $$ is tight these days.
Do you still have the Petty ticket? What day is it?
Nevermind Fook. I see they've already passed.
tomorrow ...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of The Dead are playing, and yes while their names i ridiculous, their music is not. I'll be up there at the metro, hope you guys are too!
I ended up taking my g/f. She was the one who wanted to go more than me, but she already had tickets for thursday (i was wednesday), and the crazy ticket rules made it impossible for us to combine for one day and pass of the other day. So she went to both days and we spent $50 more than we had to. On a better note, the show kicked my butt. We were roughly ten feet away from the band, and they played a great show. Actually worth the fifty bucks. THey played about 2 1/2 hours with a 20 minute break. about a 1/2 hour of that was acoustic. Mike Campbell is a wonderful guitarist.
Next up: Flaming Lips in 9 days.
Benmont Tench is great on the keyboard as well. I've had problems in the past accepting up-and-coming bands the first time I saw them. Though I'm now a big fan, I disliked the Indigo Girls when I saw them open for Neil Young in '88, I disliked Lenny Kravitz when he opened for Petty in '89, and I disliked Smashing Pumpkins when they played between Pearl Jam and RHCP in '91. Dumb.
Yes the show was cheesy and overly melodramatic, but I have to say that I had nothing to do with the decision to project a spinning water gobo while they were drowning, I would have just made the stage blue and done some sound effects, less is more.
was so great precisely because it was so awful. I think I remember my sister, or maybe the friend I persuaded to go with me, "You owe me for taking two hours of my life with this f-ing show."I saw Tom Petty in concert last July, and it was awesome. He must tour prolifically if he's already back in Chicago. Good for him.
i've honestly not seen a band quite like this ever. they were so good. i did expect to like them, but not this much.i was so happy watching them.
there were a lot of opening bands at that show, the spits were the coolest of them. they wore these black hooded dress-like things with purple "vests" over them and it all looked kind of medieval.
i'm a rftc convert.
well none of you were there, I don't think. But I'm not suprised, there wasn't an acoustic guitar on sight, and even less ponytails, beards, and sandals. But on the upside, there was me passed out on th bathroom floor of the metro. Oh yes....goodtimes, completely sober tunnel vision lost hearing, and then my knees buckled. I'd write more but I fear its not proper in the entree or whatever.
if i had $$ i would have gone to that show with you. when i have more $$ i will go to more shows with you. i promise.
playing cjoerk on the 4th and djooblijn on the 5th.
so yeah, there's some show on the 8th at the abbey pub...these bands, I don't know who they are...Red Vinegar and Blue Stone, yeah some hippy shit most likely...but I mean if you guys drag your asses out there are some other awesome bands playing, and yours truly will be working at the door! So I mean, that's reason enough, don't you think?By the way, that was all sarcasm, it doesn't translate well into type.
The show is listed on the 9:30 Club website, but not on the Spiritualized's website (nor on Pollstar).Spiritualized

Summerfest's Website: Freebies of note include the north mississippi allstars, india.arie, WILCO!, and many others. Not as much talent on a whole as the past few years, but plenty of reasons to go nonetheless. Im probly gonna try to head out to see wilco...its gonna be too packed to imagine, but hey.
um...that didnt work. www.summerfest.com. Check it out. Yeah
i am also planning on going to see wilco.

but I went to a poetry reading last night. It was...interesting. We got there really at the tail-end of it, and then there was this "feature" reader, and I don't know how I feel about her. She had SOME interesting things to say, but mostly it was ranting about bio-ecological things, and how we eat our animal brothers and sisters, and this dream she had in Colorado while travelling across the country with these animals imploring us not to eat them. There was also a slide show of pictures going on behind her. I appreciated what she had to say, but she said it in such a cliche and self-righteous way. Anyway, I give anyone props for getting up there and trying. I used to go to readings a lot and enjoy them. I'm going to start going again, maybe just to a different one.
I wish I had witenessed Wags singing with you guys oh my god I damned near pissed myself.
