This is an entree that I first proposed in the Oscars special. What are your top ten favorite films? What would you take on a deserted island if you could only take ten? It's a lot harder than it seems. I actually did it once, and I keep updating my top 100 list as I see new films. Of course, the top ten doesn' t change very much, otherwise it wouldn't be very valid. Anyway, once we have a bunch of responses, we'll put together the Diner's top ten. I've included the link to imdb's top 250 films as a starting point for inspiration (and to jog the old memory) Oh, and no counting trilogies as one movie.
Though an order is not needed, here's mine:1. Back To the Future
2. Singin' in the Rain
3. Braveheart
4. The Philadelphia Story
5. Chasing Amy
6. Double Indemnity
7. Dark City
8. North By Northwest
9. Die Hard
10. Noises Off
Somewhere I scored a copy of Facet's Movie Lover's Video Guide. It's got lots of lists and mini-reviews. This looks like the same version I have (2 years old now I guess). Anyway, it's free to US addresses. I might post a top ten later, I just need to prepare myself for general ridicule.
Please make your Entree names fit the theme. I love it when people make new entrees, but I hate it when they don't fit the theme.
I didn't know you spoke fluent Welsh.
1. Requiem For A Dream
2. 2001: A Space Odyssey
3. Candyman
4. A Clockwork Orange
5. Audition
6. American Psycho
7. Light Sleeper
8. Combination Platter
9. Midnight Cowboy
10.Bottle RocketHonorable mention: Evil Dead 2
...Gotta Go with Variety & Replay Value*Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
*The Royal Tennenbaums
*Fight Club
*The Dark Crystal
*Toy Story
*Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan
*Shawshank Redemption
*Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas
*LOTR: Fellowship of the Ring
*LOTR: The Two Towers
*LOTR: Return of the King
PS. I know that's eleven, but Return of the King isn't even out in theatres yet, and The Two Towers has yet to make it to DVD. Plus, who amongst us wouldn't the LOTR boxed set? If I had to pick only three movies, they'd be it.
PPS. If actually were a deserted island (that somehow had a TV & DVD player and working electrical outlets) I'd also want Castaway for good luck.
1. Goonies 2. Star Wars - Original, non-special edition Letterbox 3. The Big Liebowski 4. The Conversation 5. The Shawshank Redemption 6. Ran 7. The Player 8. Touch Of Evil - Re-Edit 9. City Of Lost Children 10. American Movie
1. The Player
2. The Killer
3. The Godfather
4. Seven Samurai
5. Citizen Kane (anyone who says it's overrated is a cuckoo-head)
6. Rashoman
7. Rules of the Game
8. Pulp Fiction
9. 12 Angry Men
10. Last Temptation of Christ
In semi-order because the first six are in there no matter what...any one of the last four could be bumped off if another movie comes to mind.
In no particular order, with the understanding that this was a list made in a rash 20 minutes...
It's a Wonderful Life
Doctor Zhivago
The Shawshank Redemption
The Empire Stikes Back
Rocky
The Abyss
Pete's Dragon
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
On the Waterfront
Hoosiers
This is omitted my beloved 5 hr Pride and Prejudice because that was originally broadcast as a tv mini-series...

top ten? i don't think i could elevate that many movies above others. at least, not in that small a group. but i'll list some favorites that rule the school:
- LOTR:FOTR:Extended Edition Platinum Deluxe
- LOTR:TTT:Extended Edition ...
- LOTR:ROTK:Extended Edition ...
- The Big Lebowski
- Reservoir Dogs

- Rounders
- Almost Famous
- The Song Remains The Same
- Things To Do In Denver When You're Dead
- Bangin' In Little Rock
- The Usual Suspects
- Tombstone
- This Is Spinal Tap
- Die Hard
- Dazed and Confused
- fuck rules, im listing all the Kevin Smith movies...
- Clerks
- Mallrats
- Chasing Amy
- Dogma
- Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back
- and Wes Anderson/Owen Wilson movies such as...
- Bottlerocket
- Rushmore
- The Royal Tenenbaums (man what an awesome movie)
- Moulin Rouge
- TRON
- the iron giant
- LOTR (Trilogy)
- blade runner -- director's cut
- Delicatessen
- the princess bride
- Star Wars (OG Trilogy)
- never cry wolf
- when harry met sally
- the straight story
That's a little off the cuff, so I hope it would stand up to time.
Bangin in Little Rock kicked ass
pride and prejudice is good, i've gotten really into those movies (or whatever) since they're all that my bassoon teacher owns, and since i spend more time babysitting her son than i do sleeping, i get to watch them all...there's a whole box set from A&E + BBC with p&p and jane eyre and ethan from and all that jazz</offtopic>
not in order, therefore, and unnumbered list:
- office space (maybe if I'm lucky she'll get to see my "0" face
- star trek (dammit jim, i'm a doctor...)
- star trek 2 (dammit jim, i'm a doctor...)
- star trek 3(dammit jim, i'm a doctor...)
- star trek 4(dammit jim, i'm a doctor...)
- star trek 5(dammit jim, i'm a doctor...)
- star trek 6(dammit jim, i'm a doctor...)
- star trek 7(dammit jim, i'm a geriatric...)
- star trek blah blah blah
i mean, it's not like there are three prequels to the series, two of which are just character introduction...
i can only do this with a grain of salt, because there are so many good movies out therecommence spanking
1) The Princess Bride 2) LOTR 3) Dogma 4) Indiana Jones, Raiders of the Lost Ark 5) Shrek 6) Moulin Rouge 7) A Life Less Ordinary 8) Labrynth 9) Star Wars 10) BeetlejuiceHey, we're going for entertainment, rewatchability, right?
And 11, as I assume I'm stuck on the island with the banana princess (I better be anyway!) and she'd never forgive me if she couldn't have... The Wiggles, Wiggly Wiggly World.
Would you really take only those films with you? I mean, I know they're great films, and I've seen Citizen Kane at least ten times, but I'd go more for the "comfort food" movies, that make me feel good or melancholy, or whatever. But I'm really curious.
It doesn't have to be a "desert island" list if you don't want it to be, it can just be what you think are the 10 best movies.
Er, re:pedro, also. Yeah...i didn't take it as a DiD list. I mean, OK Computer is one of my favorite albums, but I would probably cry whenever I heard it if I were alone on a desert island, whereas Weird Al would be _great_.
My top ten is pretty much movies Ive watched at least a half dozen times, and for some of them, many, many more times than that. Rules, Kane and Rashoman definitely dont make me feel warm and gooey inside, but hey, they're soooo good. I liked Goodfellas alot, but Godfather kicks its ass. I liked Gosford Park alot, but Rules of the Game is superior. Desert Island would include UHF and all of the muppet babies episodes on a burned dvd set.
(and also, i didnt even read the desert part. I just read the first line of your post and automatically skipped down to the lists, so my bad)
I said "dessert" island because these are all movies which make me come back for seconds:
(1) Contact
(2) Memento
(3) The Ring
(4) Moulin Rouge
(5) Spaceballs
(6) Sliding Doors
(7) Real Genius
(8) The 10th Kingdom
(9) Tron
(10)[ t b a ]
As you can see I don't necessarily like popular or critically accepted movies. In some cases, they aren't even that great. But they all reflect me in some way. If anyone ever makes "Snow Crash" into a movie, that would instantly become my #2 favorite.
