i am wondering if you can post the final order in which we will be recieving eachother's mixes...?

i know who mails to me and whom i mail to, but it'd be cool to see the path they're all going on.

is everyone into the idea of posting some comments on here?

i dunno, posted 6 Feb 2003 at 16:09 UTC by lukas » (Fixture)

I kind of like the suprise of not knowing what the next mix will be. I suppose it will get obvious once I know who is mailing to me and what they recevied. I guess it doesn't matter. Comments are great, but I at least want some surprise about the music I receive each month.

yeah..., posted 6 Feb 2003 at 17:37 UTC by ulyssess00 » (Fixture)

i totally repect that.

but i still think we could have a system in place where you have to write "I AM REVIEWING SO AND SO'S MIX" so if you wanted it to be a suprise, you could skip it... and then once you got that mix in the mail, you could go back and find what others had to say about it in previous months... they may have some insight you didnt... you may end up liking something you otherwise wouldn't...

the guy who got my mix needs to actually post on here..., posted 8 Feb 2003 at 02:03 UTC by baggins » (Fixture)

i have been jamming instantcofi's mix for the past few days.

stevie ray vaughn makes me vomit, but this song by a band called SPARTA is totally rocking my world. i am playing it over and over. i cant get enough. there are plenty of other other good jams on this tape so look foreward to some RAAAAAWWWWK. goatsnake sounds exactly what sabbath would sound like if they grew up in the 90's.

ps- sparta is like 4/5 of AT THE DRIVE IN. an amazing band. also check out THE MARS VOLTA, feauturing 1/5 of at the drive in. if ever a band was to be labeled as "PUNK FLOYD" it was mars volta.

Sparta is really good, posted 11 Feb 2003 at 03:43 UTC by baggins » (Fixture)

I may have mistakenly put one image of one person on the cover that is not actually on the CD. Ok, I did it I feel better now. He was cut on the 3rd revision of the mix. I feel bad about editing out Jason Spooner. You can hear his music at jasonspooner.com. I am also personally ashamed of making a mix without one Johnny Cash, Dylan or Petty song. Things like this should never happen.

On a happier note, anyone want to confess to sending the mix to me? I'm enjoying it and can think of 4 or five people in the chi-town area with that last name who could be on this board.

So I'm putting up another mix for all those involved, and those who aren't. I call it the everchangingmixofrejects. You can find it at

The username and password are in my diary... I figure that way I can edit them if they change. Please only download each song once. I have pretty good bandwidth, but It's possible to go over the 25gb I'm alotted a month. If it gets accessive I'll move it to one of those accounts I don't pay for.

Thanks!

Woot!

I realize that it's a little out of the ordinary, and depending on your mood, kind of slow... or something... so I appreciate that, ulyssess00.

The "not looking" thing was basically for two reasons -- 1., I wanted the surprises to be legitimate surprises, and 2., I wanted people to just listen to the music as opposed to anticipating what would come next. That, and I tried to give it kind of a dramatic ebb and flow that would be undermined by knowing what was coming.

But mostly, I'm just glad that you dig it, and that it's good for housecleaning!

drama, posted 14 Mar 2003 at 21:24 UTC by ulyssess00 » (Fixture)

pedro-

the "dramatic ebb and flow" is what makes your mix. if i had to name the one art that i excel at, making mixtapes is it. your mix is the kind of mix i dream of making.

few of the songs on your mix are ones that i would choose to listen to on their own, but i enjoy listening to all of them because of the way they are peiced together. and the suprise factor definatly made it better.

so... who's got my mix this month?!?! i want feedback! i really think that good feedback/explination/discussion about mixes can be done on this page without ruining such suprises.

however, when i made the mixes, i made myself a copy of my mix, and it hasn't left the first spot in the 12-disc changer in the car. i listen to it regularly, and i am completely satisfied with it every time i listen.

incidentally, the number two spot has been occupied by the Slow Learners EP since then, and it will not move for a long time. i listen to it as often as my mix.

	juice -	baggins

	elise -	pedro
	oldpossums	-	instantcofi
	welcome -	ulyssess00

The people who are behind should still be sending theirs on, but the people who "have the right mix" should hang on to it for a month. Is that right, dogmanphil?

Im planning on stealing Juice's mix every month to listen to and record from because I really liked this whole idea of listening to other peoples' musical interests. Lukas' was a little too straight up my alley to the point that i owned or was very, very familiar with more than 1/2 of the stuff, but it was still cool. I have not stolen the latest mix cd (baggins'), but probably will soon (though i own 1/2 the stuff on that too). But in any case, I wish I had been on the board before this was all going down.
Would it be unallowed for me to send something via Juice to go around the loop since Im stealing a CD each month anyway? It's ok if its a no, cause Im still stealing everyone's CD regardless :-)
But if its cool, Ill zip one out in the next couple days. I have so much love to give...

I didn't include a tracklist for the bonus mix because I don't know most of the songs by name and/or artist. It is definitely a mellow mix and it doesn't include a lot of the really wacko stuff one might expect on a mix from rjr. He told me that he made it for friends that had totally different musical likings so it's should be pretty easy on most everyone's ears. i was personally shocked to hear not a single song by the mountain goats on the CD. It's a good mix and enjoyable to stick on in the background. Maybe when he gets back from thailand I can prod him into making a mix of really esoteric stuff and throw it up on the web or something. anyway, this rusty old train is moving again. slowly.

Computers are bad things, no really. I just lost a crapload of mp3's, I'm guessing about 20GB. I'm re-ripping cds and tring to find stashes of mp3 cds I have laying about. Right now I'm re-ripping a copy of Elise's mix "Music to Chill By."

I was wondering, anyone up for trying this again? Previously a few of us talked about just making copies of your mix and sending it out to everyone. That could solve some problems. I also think an online version might not be a bad idea. I've got a crapload of server space and bandwidth. Personally I prefer mail, I like pieces of paper with my name and address on them. Somehow fulfilling.

Anyone up for any of this?

Ok... that's 2. I say we do it if we can get 6 people. 10-12 would be more ideal, but not very realistic.

On a seperate note: According to itunes, I have 7453 songs, 29.8days, 56.37 GB worth of music. I had never really added it all up and find it a little frightening. Even more so with the knowledge that over 200 of those 'songs' are albums that are all mashed together on one mp3. Also this does not include the Tom Waits collection that I estimate is around 150 albums/live shows. I think I need to lay off the music obsession for a bit.

I don't know who suggested this in the past, but I think we should do the thing were the person whose turn it is makes n mixes (where n is the number of participants) and sends them all out... so you don't have to send out 1 mix for 12 months, you send out 12 mixes in 1 month and then you're done. (Or 6 mixes, or whatever we get.)

We leave July 30th from here for California.

How often should the new mixclub send out mixes? Monthly? Or bi-monthly?

I don't really care, but I don't want to make an arbitrary decision.

Because you only have to send things out once, it's not that big of a deal to be bimonthly -- you still only have to send things out once, and you still have however long until it's your turn to get prepared -- hint: make your mix early and sit on it so you can send it out on time -- however, we may find things jam up if we try to go too quickly.

it'd be easy to do bi-monthly, posted 23 Sep 2005 at 11:36 UTC by BigJ » (Fixture)

The Rules
---------

1. When it isn't your turn, wait for your turn and receive mixes from other people in the mail. Listen to them and enjoy them.

2. When it is your turn, make n copies of a single mix, where n is the number of participants in the mixclub at the current time. View our super-secret address list online (which you get a link to when you join the mixclub). Send a copy to each person on the list.

3. PROFIT!!!

Note: The sooner you join, the more music you get! Mixes aren't passed around like last time, so if you're not in when a mix is sent, you're out of luck. Join now!!!

smax, posted 19 Oct 2005 at 00:58 UTC by pedro » (Tourist)

Can you make a few more copies? raskol just joined and I think we may have a couple more subscribers. I'd like to have you send yours out on Friday (regardless of who is signed up by then).

Isaac, how soon do you think you could have yours ready? I think we should go to a 2-per month schedule (like one person on the 5th and the other on the 20th), otherwise the new people just joining won't be sending out mixes until April of 2006!

Phil - I actually had a couple really nice 32oz, $3 glasses of Polygamy Porter last night. Wasatch Brewing is about 4 blocks from my office ( a very dangerous thing indeed). They're more of the Utah exception rather than the rule. For example, S. Salt Lake just passed a local law that clubs (bars) can't serve on sunday. I don't know all the details, but I don't plan on going down there. Park City is the heathen capitol of Utah. It's far more liberal and drunk than the rest of the state. You should hear the church or mormon's take on the Wasatch beers. I do love the ads for Polygamy Porter.. "Take some home to the wives." and "Why have just one?"

And to get back on subject, you're welcome to all the thanks for the mix... but remember what goes around, comes around. Quite literal in this case. BTW- The CD cover is the Turnagain Arm in Alaska. Get it... goes around comes around turn-again? Ok.. so I'm a dork.

OK so this should be in Silicon Nabiscos, but it relates to here. I have my mix cd prepared, but I can't burn it! For God knows what reason I can read cd's and DVD's on my drive, but can't burn them. I don't think I've tried to burn something since reinstalling Windows, so I uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers thinking that might help, but NO! I think it's all messed up. When I put a cd or dvd in everything is peachy, but if I put a blank cd-r in then the drive suddenly says it's a cd-rom and not a cd-rw and won't do squat. I've checked to see if I had any registry filters on, and there aren't. And I can't find a more updated driver, and it says my device is working properly, but it isn't.

Any ideas?

it may be Garth singing, but it's still a Bob Dylan tune, I actually like his version more than Bob's because when Bob sings it the song sounds kind of stalkerish, he's going to MAKE her feel his love, but Garth's voice gives it a nice love song feel. Besides it was our first dance at our wedding.

It's really a smattering of a lot of my favorite songs from a lot of my favorite bands. Kind of random in composition, but all quality I think.

I agree with you, BigJ, Bob's version does sound stalkerish (but I think I still like it better).

Totally enjoyed the Monkees song as well, and I'm always up for Weird Al.

It's an obscure one that just makes me laugh. And the alternative polka I think is one of the best things Weird Al has ever done, and that's sayong something because his music, albeit odd, is genius.

The last time I saw Bob he had an amazing show and during the final applause was just standing there with a harmonica in either hand shaking them, that image makes me think I just wouldn't want to be stalked by him.

What should we do -- we're off our schedule. Should we just send them out ASAP? Or (for example) has Phil been counting on a Christmas Mix CD?

Specifically, what do Lukas and Phil want to do?

Personally I don't much care for any schedule. Much like personal gifts, I always prefer surprises over scheduled mailings. Whenever you folks can get mixes out is good enough in my mind. Just mt 2 bits.

BigJ- Finally listened to Garth's version. It's not as bad as I thought it would be. I had a lot of friends that made me listen to him back in high school and I grew a pretty good dislike for his music. I love Dylan, so the idea of Garth covering Dylan made my skin crawl. My skin only crawled a little. I still prefer Dylan's version, but I also prefer Waits' version of "The Long Way Home" over Nora Jones... She's prettier in every sense of the word, but some things need to be growled, just like some things need to be creepier.

glad you didn't mind the version, posted 15 Dec 2005 at 16:59 UTC by BigJ » (Fixture)

I'm game for mixes whenever. Send 'em and I'll listen.

Mix is on the way...finally. some misc notes:

The photos were taken by karna's grandfather in the '50s or '60s. The location of the cover shot is obvoious and the inside cover is a photo of a Bedouin high priest preparing to slaughter a lamb, or so the notes said. They were slides he shot when he was over there and I took them and cleaned and scanned them. The covers are a little small because kinkos messed up my printjob.

The music is a very random collection of tunes and most of it is stuff that was new to my collection or new to my ears. I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I do.

speaking of which, I got the Three Mo' Tenors album for Christmas. It's an album I wish I'd had so I could include a song or two from that on mine. One of them, Rod Dixon, sang at my dad's funeral and sang one of the songs on the album so it has a lot of meaning to me, but regardless it's just a great mix of music in itself.

Ditto... been listening a lot lately too. I really like the track from (I think) the Ghana post office... or something like that. I've spent a bit of time looking up the artist on the cd on the interweb trying to find out more about them and their music.

BigJ- I think you're right. Cohen recorded Hallelujah on a couple albums, including one of his best of albums. It's hard to tell though. A lot of his music gets covered and he does a couple covers so it's hard to tell who is the original. Kinda like Dylan.

I also have to say I'm really happy I went first. Now I just get new music every once in a while. Such a wonderful thing. A couple links for new artists I've (re)found and liked.

hallelujah is cohen's, i guess jeff's does it the way that leonard wrote it but, not the way he sings it. meaning i think jeff's has other verses that cohan didn't perform/record.
the post office track was from a cd that pedro and i had from a class we took at npc/u called music of the worlds people. it was the only track by them on the disc.

I really like the Leonard Cohen version of Hallelujah but the sparse version Buckley does with his soaring voice only accompanied by his guitar is just so beautiful. The postal workers track I pulled of a set of CD's from uncleåke from his radio show Radio Free UP (which you can now listen to online). I wasn't aware that it was also part of the world music class--I'm wishing I had taken that class now. There are a few other songs that came from the radio show discs that I put on the mix, including the songs by Drums & Tuba, Os Novos Baianos, and Cornelis Vreeswijk. The entire Novos Baianos album, Acabou Chorare, is really really good. A few of the tracks I found via the salon.com audiofile music blog, like the New Music for Bowed Piano track and the Pearls and Brass track. The rest was laying around on my hard drives. I'm glad you guys have enjoyed it so much.

Smax, I keep your mix in my car. It's got on of my favorite Bruce Cockburn song and the Beat Down Sound track is great. Plus, with a great black keys track (great band, but they need a bass player) and a Tom Waits closer you can't go wrong.

BigJ, I've had your mix in my computer at work and it's such a weird (in a good way) collection of music. From the Monkees to KMFDM to Garth Brooks, it's got it all. The Front242 song brings me back about 15 odd years every time it comes on. And I love the Nagy Istvan song, it makes me want to dance.

Thanks for the tunes so far. Can't wait to hear mixes from the rest of you.

This has been a lot of fun I agree, posted 25 Jan 2006 at 09:13 UTC by BigJ » (Fixture)

Now that I'm done it's just sit back and listen.

You're right Lukas that my mix is weird, but so am I. It's a pretty good representation of how my mind works, random.

The Nagy Istvan music is some of my favorite, the whole album I have is great, but I currently can't find it, and that's a little upsetting. It's great music to dance to, we listened to it about 6 times in a row in Hungary and danced for hours, good times to remember.

Dylan and Cohen are a lot alike. I usually like their music, they're both brilliant lyricists, and often covers of their songs come out better than their original recordings. All in all they make for good times with music.

here's my two cents, posted 19 May 2006 at 09:46 UTC by pedro » (Tourist)

I think that people should put as much X as they want on their mixes. I think people should put 3 copies of song Y by X on their mix if they want, even if someone else put it on their mix. And then I think people should be able to make comments, criticisms and crack jokes if they want. It is funny that there has been so much Leonard Cohen on the mixes so far, regardless of how Shred or anyone else likes it. So I hope that everyone just laughs this off and doesn't get any feathers ruffled.

I think that we should just throw the "order" out the window. I propose new rules for the mix club:

1. If you're in the club, make a mix whenever you feel like it.

2. Send it out to everyone on the list.

3. Hope other people do the same.

4. Profit!

what if , posted 19 May 2006 at 16:30 UTC by mercurymouth » (Fixture)

i could track down a rare live show of garth/cohen duets and made my mix just all of the outtakes and hilarity?? i would be so popular on the diner!

Finished, posted 20 May 2006 at 10:57 UTC by smax » (Fixture)

Has everyone finished downloading the dogman bonus mix from my site? I'd like to replace the tracks with some Leonard Cohen tunes. =]

Speaking of mixes, I'd like to recomend pandora.com and 3tunes... pandora has made it a little more complicated, but not for those that know much about sound files.

ok my disc one is up on tastycronic, posted 20 May 2006 at 23:09 UTC by dogmanphil » (Fixture)

You know that link on my website to Phil's mix? Well, my mix is on there too now (someone I remember didn't get a copy that was on the list, Grady?). Also a bonus mix of new music I've found withing the past month or so will be coming soon.

I don't think I told you how very much I enjoyed your two mixes. I like them for long car trips.

mix delay., posted 10 Jul 2006 at 11:06 UTC by barefootjumper » (Fixture)

the packaging and sending of my mix has been delayed slightly. the day after i burned all the discs and did the artwork, my car was ticketed and towed. i'm working off that debt first.

To save some $ I'd be willing to help with a digi version, at least for myself. Don't want to speak for everyone.

digi is good for me too, if that would help!, posted 25 Sep 2006 at 11:18 UTC by pedro » (Tourist)

It works for me. , posted 25 Sep 2006 at 11:33 UTC by BigJ » (Fixture)

Besides it's just going to end up on my hard drive/MP3 player anyway

technologically speaking, posted 25 Sep 2006 at 12:00 UTC by blvdgirl » (Fixture)

I am still in the dark ages, so I'd prefer a disc. But, if digi works best for everyone else. Don't mind about me.

ditto, blvdgirl:, posted 26 Sep 2006 at 11:50 UTC by barefootjumper » (Fixture)

i wouldn't even know where to start creating a digi version. plus, these cds are very much ready and waiting to go out. i always prefer to get a cd because i don't have a computer or an ipod, but if someone prefers the digital version and can help me to create one, i'm happy to do it.

BFjumper, posted 26 Sep 2006 at 15:09 UTC by smax » (Fixture)

If you have the cd in mp3's I can make you a thing to upload them for a digi version folks can download. If you want to travel this route drom me an e-mail at <myusername>@<myusername>x.com

Thanks Amy. I was very surprised. I'll get one out soon too. This time it won't just be my random thought process of music I'll pick a theme. Either that or I'll just burn you all the Katie Todd band cd I have, which is enough really.
