Redvinegar is one of many artistic endeavours supported by Tastytronic Industries. Because they are untrustworthy, artsy types, opinions expressed here are not necessarily the opinions of Tastytronic Industries, it's affiliates or investors.

Formed in 1995, redvinegar combines influences of folk, classic rock, hard rock, country, and the ever present and so-called "alternative" rock (that's a lot of rock) to create a wholly pleasing blend of herbs and spices.

Ok. So Moon is going to be out of town for the summer -- but before he leaves, we're going to do some recording. North Park now has a digital 16-track, and Bill is always asking me when I'm going to go down there and use his equipment.

So, after graduation, we're going to work up it looks like 5 songs: I don't know where here is, matthew, sliding to you, peace of mind, and "bob", and go in and do a good job on a "really nice demo". The kind of thing that, if it turns out well enough, might be close to a low-budget EP, or if it turns out ok, will just be enough of a demo to get us gigs at places that need a CD.

But I feel like between Phil and I, we will be able to put together a decent recording, and it's kind of exciting to think about that.

Since Moon is gone for the summer, we're not sure quite what we're going to do, drummer wise. We have to look up some old ghosts that may still be around -- but it's all up in the air.It would be cool to get some of those paying gigs at the Wrigleyville GOose Island, although I sincerely hope the crowd is more like 50 Tim McGinnisses, and not 50 Frat Boys.

But THat's the News from Lake Michigon.

Irving Park -- this is an important show, because it can get is on the schedule for regular gigs at the Lyon's Den if we can show that we can create enough of a draw. So please come out! Aaron Moon is staying out east this year, working with Americorps and taking a year off from school... this means that redvinegar needs to find a drummer.

In other news, the August 17th Goosefest gig has been canceled for us, due to a number of things, not related to Aaron Moon.

I think I will emblazon one of my shirts with the phrase "practice makes adequate", and wear it each moment that I am bulking up for my audition with red vinegar. My new idea is to build a raft when I am up north and anchor a drum kit to it, setting myself adrift among the autumn squalls of Lake Superior. I will need no food, as the grains of rock and roll shall sustain me, and I shall drink from the bounty of Gitche Gummie. Setting off a pretender to the throne, the winter winds should bring me drifting into Chicago via Lake Michigan mid October, though the keen ear might hear the tribal tatooing reflect off the waves long before the bearded apparition appears. I am Odysseus, back from the dead, and I shall string my bow and tighten my drumheads to reclaim what is mine, the beauty of Penelope and the lands of Albany, O! blessed realm of red skies and rivers of vinegar!

But you really might want to call Paul Garcia, who will tell you just how terrible I really really REALLY am. Please believe me!

I'm just going to note for the record here, that having Erik as your drummer is going way overboard on the rock-band-member stereotype issue. Even can manufacture several bad British, and at least one bad Central European vaguely Slavic accent that I can recall, offhand. . .

but at least there's no hope of him having eternal life a la Keith Richards . . .at least I hope . . .

it looks like we will be playing the 25th of oct. at the goose island in wriglyville. so, mark your calanders. this is the night before isaac and megan's wedding. so, come and wish them well, have a pint and rock with us. lukas gas up the tank and take that personal day. also this will be oldpossumus' first show as the new drummer of redvinegar. he has been up in the minnesota cold with moon's drums for about a month. here is a quote from Hemingstein in a recent letter.

"as i beat a rythm on these old keys(typewritter), erik, outside and up the hill in the garage, beats and beats on moon's drum kit. he has been extremly diligent with his practising; i think he is pouring all the stamina and spiritual reserve of a man who has recently written a 15,000 word masters thesis into his drumming.

well, the show is just a little more than a week away and we are really excited. practices have been great. honestlt things have never been better. i for one am really excited for the 8th because i just want people to hear what we are doing these days. tim (freakingfreak) said that he is really worried cause if it doesn't go well he will be that more upset cause3 he knows how great it is at practice and just hopes that comes out at the show. also, i can't wait to hear the slow learners play. if you don't already know their music your in for a surprise. they are really good. so, see you there. and remember if you or people your going with are under 21 make sure they are there before 10. that way we woun't run into the problems we did last time with people not getting in.

You all tore it up Saturday night. The opening act was great and a nice surprise, not totally a surprise cause I knew who'd be involved, but I didn't know what sound to expect and was very impressed. Three talented lads there (and I never thought I'd hear Yeats' poetry put to rock music, or any music besides maybe an Irish drinking song, and that was very cool).

Redvinegar, as always, rocked the house. Great songs and I love the energy that's always there while the band's performing. Just watching them and seeing how into the music they are has me sitting there smiling like I'm high all night. I never would have known Pedro was sick if he hadn't mentioned something about taking Theraflu after the show.

And just as great as the music was seeing a lot of people I haven't seen in a while and really missed. Excellent night, thanks to all.

Curiosity killed the cat. It almost did kill my cat, Oscar, who took a nose-first dive off our porch a few months ago, trying to escape, and broke his sternum. We have x-rays to prove it. We had to take him to the emergency vet. Frickin' Oscar.

You'll laugh when you see what I mean about my pool skills, but I'll give it a shot some Monday. Usually, whoever I'm playing against will win the game before I sink even one ball. Pathetic.

I think Raskol told me he was playing a show with RV in April--if that's true, then ROCK!

Seriously though, the show with Tim Lowly will be very low key, with probably a bunch of new "this-show-only" music. It will be in a church, and will be a benefit for Berry Memorial and some other cause. Plus, Tim's band is really incredible. He's a great musician and a great guy if you don't know him.

Plus, Blue Stone and redvinegar -- double bill at the Lyon's den. You know your faces are going to be completely rocked off at that show!

so, last weekend pedro and i went to check out the studio at sacred heart in duluth, mn. its a old church that was going to be torn down back in the late eighties that a few people bought and turned into a music center.

so, shredzilla, pedro, and i went to meet with eric swanson who runs the studio. he gave us a tour of the place and played some music that was recorded there. its amazing! we really are excited to work up there.

Perhaps I am extremely slow on the uptake, but I just today understood the Biblical reference of the band name Red Vinegar. I was raised very Christian and am more versed with the Bible than most, but I never made the connection until now.

Now that I know this. I am more prepared to create apropriate artwork for Red Vinegar CD inserts, t-shirts, posters, and other band merchandise. I work on donations Pedro, so if you've got no cash throw me a nickel and let's get to work. I work at kinko's so all the printing is 25% off! Woohoo, Red Vinegar rocks!!

PS. I think that there is an element of blues to Red Vinegar as well, and that was not mentioned in the entree intro. There's just that soulful vibe, you know? Entree intro -- try sayin' that five times fast.

Amy, you're right. We had a lengthy discussion about it this weekend. OutsideInfluence wrote that he's more familiar with the Bible than most...he certainly is more so than me, which is my own fault. But I explained that as far as the Diner is concerned, I think many of you are experts as far as myself is concerned.

In any case, Redvinegar is like aforementioned vinegar as far as assuaging one's spirit with good, solid tunes. Since a lot of people here are English majors, it's nice to know that one can free-associate without incrimination or just plain confused looks.

This should go to Thelogy Fried Rice--but was that vinegar supposed to help Him? I know it was supposed to be mixed with wine, but what prompted the man to do that?

I think the word "vinegar" was a king jamesism that stuck for "sour wine" or "cheap wine." It probably wasn't like what we think of cooking vinegar, which would be pretty brutal to drink.

Also, I'd like to say that I became a Red Vinnegar fan while Cinnamongirl was playing a CD, and I asked "Who is this? They're really good." I turned out to be a song sung by Pedro and Mercurymouth for someone's wedding I believe, but it was so enchanting and haunting. It captured me and never let go. I think that it was less of a sponge than a loofa.

when the campus pork stops you for practicing, make sure to ask them if you woke them up, they always seem to sleep through the late night shifts, especially on the weekend when i'm selling crack out the front door. Of course when i call them on it and write "wake up and do your F*cking job once in awhile" it gets immediately painted over (as in, withing a few hours) so that nobody ever actually finds out that security doesn't do their job. whatever, i'm bitching now so i'll go to bed.

irving, damen, and lincoln. Just up lincoln from martyr's and down irving from cafe 28. If you need food before the show, martyr's has excellent chicken quesadilla (it's great pre-show food). The Lyon's Den has some greasy food too. Or the Wild Goose is just up lincoln and they've got tasty food too. We used to walk there for beers and bar food and hockey playoff games when we lived over on Berteau. Have fun at the show, I wish I could be there. I love the Lyon's Den. Pedro, does Joe stil have a B3 and Leslie? If so, you should totally use it.

the only problem with soundboard recordings like these are that drums, guitar amps, and bass amps all put out a bunch of sound already so you don't have to push them in the levels. but, vocals need to be pushed alot. so, most of the recordings are really heavy on vocals. but, you guys get the idea at least.

i think grace, b-side, and mathew are the best ones from the soundboard. games is fun too.

The vocals were not loud enough in the front of the room. my guess is that the mix in back has them loud enough, but the mix in front is more saturated in the overall stage sound. which has everything amplified except the vocals. anyway, pedro's vocals are really dang good, and quite a significant part of the songs, and i wish i could have heard them better. you guys rule...

thursday night might be difficult for me, and saturday is my sis' graduation party (she's gettin' her master's from north park--go, sarah!), but that's more of a daytime thing. maybe my dad will even come along for sat., he's in town from denver, and as i said delisi's is near my house, and he loves live music.

it *is* funny, and the way some people were talking, it was like they thought it was the most hilarious thing in the world. And so on one hand we felt like, it's not really what we thought of when we thought of making an rv shirt, but on the other hand, it's funny and memorable, and maybe people would like that... etc. It will be interesting to see how that turns out.

I would probably wear it. But not for the same reason that I'd wear one of the other designs that I think is actually "a cool design".

Oh, I see what you mean phil about "not wearing it," like, it would be kind of lame for the bandmembers to wear it because of what it says. TOtally. But if I weren't in the band, I'd wear the shirt. But I can understand how some people wouldn't want to.

Here's the deal. This is going to sound technical, but it really isn't -- so read on and let me know what you think.

Originally when I wrote the voting program, I wanted people to be able to vote from 1 (highest) to 12 (lowest). This presents a logical problem, because if 1 is higher than 12, you have to do some kind of mathematical translation to the number in order to make actually be more than 12 after the same transformation.

For example, I could have made a list like this: 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, and then when someone voted 1, I would take the first item from the list, in this case, 12. Or when someone would vote 12, I'd take the last item from the list, in this case 1. Or when someone voted 3, they'd get 10 points. But I didn't like that solution, because programmatically, it's not as elegant.

So, what I did was have the vote weights actually represent the denominator of a fraction (the bottom number) -- so a 1 was worth 1 (one), a 2 was worth 1/2, a 3 1/3, etc., until a 12 (last place) was worth 1/12. This was a simple mathematical solution to "inverting" the value of my 12 numbers, but it created a logical problem I didn't really think about until yesterday, and that is:

My system essentially said that you like your 2nd place choice half as well as you like your first place choice. And that you like your 3rd place choice a third as much as you like first place. Conversely, it takes 3 "3rd place votes" on a particular shirt to equal 1 first place vote. This makes your first place vote extremely powerful, and your other votes much "weaker". If you graph this, it becomes a curve.

Contrast that to the first method I showed above with the list (12, 11, 10, 9, ... 1) -- that creates a system where your second place vote (11) is only a little worse off than your first place vote (12), and your third place vote (10) is just a little worse off than that. This graphs in a straight line.

This makes your first and last place votes the same as in the curve -- 1 is to 1/12 as 12 is to 1 -- but it drastically changes how your "in between" votes turn out. This is the dilemma. In the curved result, it takes 2 second place (1/2) votes to equal one first place (1) vote -- but in the linear result, two second place votes equal 22 where one first place vote is a mere 12!

This means that if I calculate the votes in a curved fashion, your first place choice is incredibly important, where your other choices are not nearly as important. As I said before, it literally means that you like your second place choice half as much as your first place choice. However, in the linear rendering, many second place choices will count more than some first place choices, and this changes especially how opinion is registered overall.

Another good way of looking at it is to say that a curved rendering illustrates which shirt is "most often picked as favorite" by downplaying the importance of other ranks, wheras the linear rendering takes overall preference into account across the board and the winner may very well be the one that everyone picked as second place, rather than the one that most people picked as first place.

To continue with that thought, in the curved representation, if 20 out of 30 people said that the Versaci was their favorite, that'd be 20 points for the Versaci design. If everyone said that the Gucci was their second favorite, that would only be 15 points for the Gucci design (30 * 1/2). In the linear representation of the same scenario, if 20 people voted Versaci as #1, that would be "240" points. And if everyone (30) voted Gucci as second place, that would be "330" points for that design, and Gucci would beat Versaci.

So my question is, without telling you how that affects any of the shirts, which do you think is the best way to calculate the votes? How did you expect the ranking to work? Do you like your second place choice half as well as your first place? Or are the ranks closer than that in your mind?

Maybe I'll hold an election to determine the answer.

This my friends, is why statistics are so easily manipulated. Seriously though, what do you guys think? How should the votes be calculated?

Scoring of voting like this is an interesting problem. The linear method is the least effective since it would be easy for a so-so shirt that everyone put at fifth to overtake a different shirt that had lots of first place votes. 30 fifth place votes is equal to 20 first place votes in the linear method. I think that at least some weight is needed so that value is added to the first place votes. In the second method, where a score is given as 1/x where x is the rank you get, as pedro pointed out, a large bias toward the highly ranked shirts. I'm not sure if this wieghting is too much.

So it comes down to basically how much should 2nd place be worth. I think that 1/x is a pretty good system even if it does skew pretty heavily on the upper end. One thing you could do is jut shift the curve up a little bit by using a multiplier. Like val = (1/x)*1.5 for values of x>1 or something similar. You could always arbitralily just start picking numbers too but with a formula like that you have constitency between the scores.

I personally like the F1 point system, first place gets ten. second place gets like, six. third place gets four and fourth place through sixth or seventh get three, two, one points, respectively. something to that extent. I think that this method is a little better, but this isn't a race, so forget about that. shouldn't the tshirt with the most amount of first place votes get it? I mean, you're only going to make one shirt right? I don't know, like, if half the people vote for one shirt to be first place, the other half on another shirt to be first place and everybody voted for a third shirt to be second place, shouldn't that shirt win second place?

so, if i, being simpleminded and ignorant as i am, were running the voting i think i would have had people vote singularly for only three shirts each. then taken the top voting three shirts and had everyone vote for just one shirt, making each vote worth it's weight.

...it seems to me that you'd get a more worthwhile result if you assigned points based on the number of 1st place votes, second place votes, etc., that each design gets. For example, if 30 people vote, and 20 of them give the same design first place, then that design will get 20 times whatever the value of first place is. This would help eliminate the problem of, say, two fifth place votes being worth more than one first place vote. For example, if a design gets 20 first place votes and 20 second place votes, it would receive 60 points: 20 for the first place votes, and 40 for the second place votes (20x2). Lowest point total of all the designs would then be declared the winner. I haven't crunched any numbers, but this system seems like it would take care of the problem of two fifth place votes being worth the same as one first place vote.

So, the metro doors shirt clearly won in both elections with the highest percentage of votes and the lowest disapproval rating, with the tree shirt being a close second. The problem with the metro doors shirt is that the range of color and the photographic quality of the design means that it will be harder and more expensive to print. We really want to have shirts available at the Taste, and so all things considered, we felt like it made more sense to print the tree shirts now, with the intention of making the metro doors shirts later on. It looks like the shirts are going to be $10. We're planning on printing a few colors of them, since it doesn't cost more to do so.

so we got a bunch of shirts so, if you guys to make it to the taste no worries we won't sell out of them just let pedro know and we'll save them for you and figure out what shipping would cost. the sizes are:
woodrose:xl, l, m, youth large(which is better than small)
chestnut:xl, l, m, youth large, and (2)xxl

the youth large isn't as tiny as a small and is alot shorter than the normal larges. so, for all the ladies out there you don't have to cut off the bottom of the shirt.

i am hold one of the xxl for baggins. so, i guess there is only 1 left. BigJ do you wear xl or xxl? it's yours if you want it.

Their smallest batch is 25 pieces I believe. I imagine they have tanks and whatnot available, but they may cost more than regular t-shirts.

THe treeshirt design is one screen, so that makes it cheaper, and 72 shirts would be $5.25 a shirt. I don't know how much 25 shirts would be -- probably more because it is a small batch, but possibly not, if their prices go in steps.

There is also a one-time charge of $25 per screen -- so if your shirt was ONE screen (one color), that would be 25 + (25 * 5.25) which is $156 at the absolute cheapest.

I'm not sure if I wear an XL or a XXl since it depends on the shirt. I usually wear an xl though since the xxl ends up being to baggy, but the length is nice, it's a toss up. Too bad I'll be in Ohio all next week, but I'll buy a shirt when I get back.
