Chicago is such a great town for crazy stories and political gossip. Its like living in your very own mobster tabloid, only it's real!

Ok, so I feel bad about enjoying it so much, but seriously, there's some crazy stuff going on in this town.

On the BBC, they call them "Automated Cash Dispensers". Imagine that phrase being breathily intoned by some upper-crust limey.

I have a nasty feeling that "ATM" was/is associated (maybe only at the outset) with one particular financial institution and the BBC habitually avoids using brand names. For instance, all the "How to do it" childrens shows when I were a lad ensured that neutral descriptions prevailed, such as "Adhesive tape" (pronounced [in a plumby accent] as ad-hesive tape with a non-silent 'h').

George's Retirement Party, posted 10 Jul 2002 by pedro » (Staff)

I think we should throw George and 'Ellen a retirement party in the neighborhood. Seriously. Where should we do it? We could probably do it on the lawn at NPCC, and get the neighborhood involved, too. Bring over grills and have a big 'ol picnic.

What do you guys think?

I've always preferred "cash machine" or "bank machine"- gets to the point.

As per the retirement party idea- you all should definately do something. You spent enough time on those benches making them inhale your second hand smoke- you owe them.

Hey, not that I mind having the evening ALL TO MYSELF, nor that I wouldn't mind celebbing yours a month early, but someone's birthday is this week -- within 3 days before mine... someone from the local posse... who is it?

I'm shooting for Sat. night at Moody's -- I'm hoping to take Ms. Harrington out to dinner on Friday night, since she'll be in town. Awwwwww YEAH!!!!

CSO at Ravinia, Sat. Schaumburg Flyers & Moody's?, posted 19 Jul 2002 by pedro » (Staff)

We're going to Ravinia tonight for a picnic and the CSO... I hope it doesn't rain!

Anyway, Saturday, we are planning on going to Moody's later on -- would anyone be interested in trying to catch a Schaumburg Flyer's game in the early evening (6:20) and then go to Moody's? People who wanted to just meet at Moody's could do that, too.

Who around here should I call? Like Easy-E, Kerry, etc. It would be great to get a bunch of people up there... or is it too much work? It is really fun, and the best seats in the house are like, $9.00.

Who else is around that might want to go?

Schaumburg Flyers & Moody's, posted 19 Jul 2002 by pedro » (Staff)

Here's the scoop:

5:00 PM -- meet at casa del pedro (5305 Tre Kronor Avenue) for travelling to Schaumburg for the game. Consider being a driver if you have a car and are willing.

6:20 -- Game Time in Schaumburg. Flyers vs. Sioux Falls Canaries. I'm rooting for the Flyers and DO NOT plan on being kicked out of the ballpark, so no big ideas.

10:00 -- meet at Moody's Pub on Broadway (south of Peterson).

Anyone is welcome. No presents or cake or any of that stuff necessary -- we just want to have a good time!

Well, there still needs to be fire access to hanson, student services, caroline, and nyvall, so there will have to be some kind of driveable surface. But it really should look nice when it's all done.

The original athletic facility plan was going to be on the corner of foster and kedzie (that weird hangar looking thing you might have seen plans for). The newly proposed one will actually go across from the apartments and physical plant in that junkyard, from what I understand, and is going to be less elaborate than the other one that was planned. I think that's all relatively public info, but just in case it's not, you didn't hear it from me.

...to rollerskate at! come on, Rainbo was dope shit back in the day.

also, my dad saw Led Zeppelin play there way way back in the day. that counts for something in my book.

still though, that's creepy. some kid come up a little short for a sno-cone? were there witnesses in the Hokey Pokey debacle back in '77 that had to be taken out?

Too bad about Dave Matthews dropping bus waste on people siteseeing.

honestly,, posted 28 Aug 2004 by pedro » (Staff)

Dave Matthews probably has no idea what his bus driver does with the waste... it sounds like it's pretty common for bus drivers to do that (as despicable as it is). DMB probably shouldn't be so demonized about it.

tour bus..., posted 28 Aug 2004 by ulyssess00 » (Fixture)

i actually was kind of hoping that it WASN'T DMB, but rather some band a little more... i dunno.... punk rock?... who had INTENTIONALLY timed the drop so as to hit a tour bus. unless my grandmother was on the boat i'd think that was hilarious.

after reading The Dirt by Motley Crue, that's the kind of thing that i find hilarious.

sorry...., posted 28 Aug 2004 by ulyssess00 » (Fixture)

that should have read... "so as to hit a tour BOAT" not bus.

The dumping is not DMB's fault..., posted 30 Aug 2004 by chester » (Fixture)

...but the not-owning-up to the dump in the first place and the subsequent dodginess (dodgy-ness, dodge-ie-ness?) is their fault.

It's unknown whether there will be a Germanfest RV set... although I may wander over to the festivities.

i know that..., posted 31 Aug 2004 by baggins » (Fixture)

the browns, heather, noah, and ella, will be coming into chitown on the 11th. although, i believe that night is already booked solid for them with family stuff, since N's parents have yet to actually see the child.

if you do end up doing an RV set... see if you can pull some strings and have me DJ inbetween?

ok -- but I wouldn't plan on it , posted 1 Sep 2004 by pedro » (Staff)

will have to enjoy it in my mind. last time it rolled around and i lived down the street i enjoyed walking over in the afternoon for a brat and a beer rather than the late night beer guzzling. they also do a springfest in the same plaza. i'm getting hungry...

pedro, posted 24 Sep 2004 by neoacerbitas » (Fixture)

is this what you do all day long? I've never heard anything like that before. I heard that people had bee killed by ice falling off the slanted part but, i must say, i'll never be able to walk past that building, or even see it again without a straight face.

really?! , posted 24 Sep 2004 by pedro » (Staff)

I've heard that many times, from many different people over the years... I thought it was common Chicago-lore. I always thought it seemed a little far-fetched. And no, it's not what I do all day.

Don't let the door hit you in the ass on your way to New York, Sammy. Good riddance.

And I'm not even a really passionate Cubs fan (really a more White Sox fan, truth be known) but even I'm tired of Sammy by now. Dusty protected him all year long and this is how Sammy treats the ONE guy protecting him from the heat of a slugging percentage less than the average amount of change in my sofa? Yeah, it's time for him to go.

For that matter, they should find some way to package him with Eddy Curry and Eddie Robinson... maybe some sort of combo Mets/Knicks deal?

Thirding Lt & GNat's sentiment. I've always thought of him as a creep.

Ohare, posted 12 Nov 2004 by chester » (Fixture)

I just want to say that Ohare is a mess. Billions of dollars and more runways aren't going to help. It's so crowded and the planes are delayed so often that I think they need twice the capacity if everything is to remedied there. I say open the Peotone airport. And utilize Midway more. I prefer flying out of midway but a lot of times I find better deals out of Ohare through Travelocity. So I'm late a lot.

if you think ohare is bad..., posted 12 Nov 2004 by barefootjumper » (Fixture)

try flying into or out of LAX. it's awful.

i had a layover in o'hare after flying out of and into LAX several times and was struck by what a breeze it was to get around, to get through security, how short the lines were, how much more efficient everything was. and bedlam didn't seem to be ensuing in the pickup lanes outside.

oh, and LAX almost landed a plane on top of a plane preparing to take off. only because it was daytime and the pilot of the landing plane could see the one taking off did they avoid complete humiliation and total disaster.

i think what you meant to say was "lax almost landed a plane on top of a plane again"

CHICAGO -- A bus driver for the Dave Matthews Band pleaded guilty Wednesday to misdemeanor charges for unloading human waste onto a tour boat on the Chicago River last summer and was given 18 months of probation.

Stefan A. Wohl, 42, of Selma, Texas, entered his plea before Judge William O'Malley in North Misdemeanor Court (Br. 29), who sentenced Wohl to 18 months on probation, 150 hours of community service and a $10,000 fine.

Passengers aboard a tour boat on the Chicago River passing under the Kinzie Street Bridge on Aug. 8, 2004, were sprayed with 80 to 100 gallons of human waste dumped from the tour bus holding tank, according to lawsuits and charges filed in the incident.

yuck, posted 11 Mar 2005 by baggins » (Fixture)

i can't even imagine how nasty that would be. we all know how much Dave likes peeing on people... i hesitate to say it wasn't on purpose (his purpose) that this happened.

Great stuff happening in Chicago right now wrt The Outfit:

Calabrese Sr. displayed more of his Outfit-style moralism as he spoke with his son about one of the factors that helped lead to the Spilotros' killings - Anthony's rumored affair with a married woman.

"That's a friend, and that's a commandment," Calabrese told his son. "He, right then ... nail went in the coffin, right then, that was one nail."
